for those having BBA algae problems, you may try keep some
Apple snails or be sold as mystery snails , i bought 9 for fun, and they totally
unexpectedly eat all the BBA on my filter outlet , air hose and wood,
but be warn , they have huge appetite for food although they won't touch your live plants and shrimps, they will compete with your fish and shrimps for every food throw in.
Good things they unlike ramshorn snails won't breed readily and actually need a pair in order to breed.

yup, they will look like that, but i find it takes time,
im using 80% clorox, 20% water ratio to get that,
and i need to shake the purigens inside a plastic bottle 2-3 times a day in interval to get all of them fully regenerate.
It usually took me a week, unless im using an auto stirrer which can take up to 1 day only.
Also, learnt it the hard way, too frequent in regenerating them will decrease their life usage.  doh.gif

*
o just saw your reply, it suppose to took me 32hrs to regenerate it but i forgot about it and left it in clorox for 48hrs(24hrs more),
i think the KEY for it to regenerate fast is using "Seachem Prime", like your case after 48hrs soaking in clorox, there is still stains on the bag and some inside, then i dose 2 tablespoon Prime(around 30ml), after > 8hrs, all clear/clean like new.(refer picture).
and i don't need to shake or rub or put it under running water. All the stains just dilute/disappear after final soaking with seachem prime.

now im abit curious about seachem prime.
wonder what  stuffs they put inside it. ive used a few types of anti-chlorine and i got different results haha.
maybe next time ill try seachem prime then.

*
last time i use API stress coat but it left a white slime on the bottom of the mineral bottle i use to refill tanks, every since that i change
to prime, prime actually cheaper in the long run compare with others as it highly concentrated , only small amount is needed.

planted aquarium + cherry shrimp + otto - filter = possible?
read somewhere that apparently, if you do regular water changes (1/2 times a week), then you're fine without a filter..
is it true?

i've not seen any CRS / cherry shrimp (the cheaper rm2+ kind I think) / ghost shrimp / any other shrimps in that matter without a filter..
*
Possible provided there is minimum bioload and regular upkeep to keep the tank clean. CRS is out of reach though.

thanks smile.gif but how about water flow? it's not a necessity?
*
i have keep them in an 15cm tank without filter like a Betta fish setup, i just have some stone , lava rock and bio ring as substrate.
water change only when i see fit.
You can also use fan to blow across water surface to achieve water flow, and reduce tank temp as well.
But why you want to have this kind of setup without filter, it is bcos of the filter noise?

hmm if that's the case, i'll hang on to one species first then..
i dont mind spending on filter.
aint air bubble & filter 2 different things with 2 different functions?
wont there be a difference if i substitute filter with an air bubble?
hence im wondering if what the shrimp really needs is water current

thanks for your reply smile.gif
*
I think what Kim mean is can use those sponge filter powered by air pump, this is good cos you have filter and provide oxygen to tank as well also can provide some water flow. Just use sand or fake stone when setting up a shrimps only tank. Soil like Ada will take a lot of time to cycle to be safe for keeping shrimps.

You can add in mosquito rasbora, confirm won't touch shrimplet unless it is larvae.

easily removed when i rub it out but i just want to know if it's harmful to my plants/fauna
and the cause of it as well..

thanks in advance guys

those are some sort of Bio-film bacteria produce, shrimps/snails feed on those.

Anyone have any ideas if Eheim 2217 is sufficient for a 4feets length, 2 feets high and 2feets wide. Volume were calculated as 450 litres?

thanks
*
4ftx2ftx2ft ~ 120cm x 60cm x 60cm /1000 = 432L. Of water.
For 4ftx1.54ftx1.5ft ~ 120cm x 45cm x 45cm /1000
= 243L .
This assume you fill the water till the top tip and no substrate and deco (blank Tank).
Yes. It is recommend your filter to have 6X FLOW cycle of your total tank water volume.

Thanks just enquired from Yee Fatt aquarium, were quoted RM459 each for 2217...ok? Were tols that new stock going to increase by RM150.00...The 1500xl was quoated RM1600.00...
*
rm459 for eheim 2217 with free full media? if not then not cheap. go pasar pudu Alive aquarium, last time i got it for rm450 with free full media.
even at rm499 with full filter media is better then rm459 with sponge only. Those media along worth >rm200 if purchase separately , else those sponge outside LFS selling for RM10 each only(those they taken out from eheim 2217 when they setup for client).

btw, just curious on the biomedia.. how much is enough and how much is too much?
*
depend how deep your pocket and how big your tank and filter.
Just go for over filtration if space and pocket permit.

Beside MTS, Ramshorn , nerite , you all can try Rabbit snails (sulawesi snail), breed slow one to two at a time,
so far they survive in my various tank range from ph6.4 to ph8.

Is it? I saw that today, looks expensive and good tongue.gif but RM89 for a small one sad.gif

Btw, is it really silent? The 5W filter I just bought today is noisy like no tomorrow omg, somemore aquarium put in my room, cant's sleep for sure sad.gif (But I removed it already because of the noise, currently using a low powered 3W filter which I don't think is enough for a 3 gallon tank with 5 goldfish which poop a lot)

Currently this is my setup. Just added in 2 plants, dunno why my fish always float up near the plants, is this a good or bad sign?  rclxub.gif

Your tank is quite small for keeping gold fish, some more 5 of them, Goldfish are living dustbin, will eat anything eatable in your tank including plants.
i'm currently using 5 Eheim hob and 3 canister , all super silent, but i do find some cheaper HOB quite ok, HDOM, Jeneca brand HOB noise lvl is quite low as well.
http://www.eheim.asia/prod_eheim_filter_hangon.html
Eheim not only silent but built to last.
Your tank is not cycled yet, Water change your tank since is quite dirty as show in your picture, then dose those liquid bacteria into the tank
everyday to speed up the tank cycling.

Is it okay if the water level touches the part where the filter outputs the filtered water (the part where it makes a "waterfall"
Btw guys, is it okay if I put some bio rings over here at the gap behind the filters? It's a mechanical filter btw..

[attachmentid=3312329]

Outflow same lvl as water height is ok. Bio ring can be put there else no where to put as the jeneca filter is slim type. I'm using one in my clam tank.
