I thought you want "reliable"? Please considered yourself warned about Asus Malaysia warranty support sweat.gif

Anyway, the GPU is slightly more powerful than those models suggested earlier. Part of the price premium go to the design and the sound card.

greetings sifus... need opinion on getting a laptop sometime this weekend:

1. Preferred Brand : Anything reputable except Lenovo (dont know why)
2. Budget : RM3k, very reluctantly up to 3300.
3. Usage : work, load server services and all.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size :12-13.3" max (unless 14" screen but 13.3" foot print)

additional preferences:
a. M processor i5 or i7, U processor i7 only, all 3rd gen, faster better.
b. memory installed not very important, preferably can go 16GB, max 8GB is acceptable
c. matte screen is a must (antiglare)
d. screen resolution 1366x768 is acceptable, higher better, FHD is best.
e. weight not more than 2kg inclusive battery, lighter better
f. optical drive not required but dosent mind.
g. windows 7 pro preferred, any other windows acceptable.
h. SSD or hybrid drive is good, normal HDD acceptable (can upgrade later)
i. discreet graphic is preferred, or intel 4000 is acceptable (need to do a bit of autoCAD).
j. freebies all not required.
k. professional: color, black, grey, white etc...

currently considering the following Sony VAIOs, was wondering if there are any other choices.
SVS13116FGB
»Intel® Core™ i5-3210M Processor 2.50 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz
»Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit
»HDD: 640 GB (Serial ATA, 5400 rpm)
Suggested Retail Price

You choose an expensive brand to prefer laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif
Toshiba currently line up in Malaysia that is within your budget carry weak ass GPU like Nvidia GT630M or AMD HD7670M. They can hack it when it come to Dishonored, but Assassin's Creed, iinm, is not playable unless you turn it to the lowest details (and it still will not be smooth).

Only decent gaming laptop from Toshiba is this, way over your budget:

A friend told me designing purpose requires specific graphic card wor..like FirePro or Quadro. (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/syscert?siteID=123112&id=18844534&results=1&stype=graphic&product_group=6&release=2013&os=8192&manuf=all&opt=1)

Budget below 5k isit possible?
*
Autocad & 3D Max - For most optimised performance (with certified driver), GPU like FirePro or Quadro is the best. Pro normally go for them. Poor students, on the other hand, has been known to plough along on these softwares using consumer class GPU laugh.gif

For good performance - Yes, i7 quad core is preferred (software can utilise). SSD (solid state drive) will help reduce disc access time (OS boot faster, apps launch faster, files read and save faster) but have no impact on software performance. SSD is expensive (128G ~ RM300+/-, 256G ~ RM600+/-). Normal 7200rpm HDD is fine. RAM is cheap (4G stick ~ RM80), normally 8G is enough, but if workstation has 4 RAM slots, you can go nuts with 16G (4x4G) laugh.gif You can upgrade RAM and SSD aftermarket, will not void laptop warranty.

17" is out of your budget, 15" with FHD screen or 14" with HD+ screen is pretty good.

Dell 15"
Precison M4700, i7-3720M + Nvidia Quadro K1000M@RM5800, 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W7P [Screen Upgrade: FHD, FHD IPS RGB] [CPU Upgrade: up to i7-3920XM] [GPU Upgrade: Quadro K2000M] [RAM up to 32GB] (opt for FHD screen)

if latest laptop with win8, can it be downgrade to win7?

the proper FreeDOS is actually this:
http://www.freedos.org/

But over here, we just use it to denote the new laptop don't come with OS pre-installed.

MS only give W8Pro OEM version owners the official downgrade right to W7Pro. If you new laptop come with W8, you are stuck with W8 license (what you do on your own to get the laptop to run W7 is you own matter brows.gif )

Sometime OEM OS that come with laptop is really cheap you know smile.gif
Consider this:
Inspiron 14, B887 + Intel HD@RM1099[1.99kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8; Linux@RM999
Add RM100, you get a W8 license. No way you get that kind of deal going retail (legit smile.gif )

Yes, has been using W8 on both home and office laptops. It's a good OS. Just learn a few new keyboard short cut, and you will be pro in no time laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

In your opinion which model would be recommended base on the models above? The samsung and asus vivobook have more or less the same specs right? As i said before i used to consider the yoga 13 but it seems that there are problems with the wifi and fan noise.
*
This is purely my personal preference: Touchscreen on traditional laptop is difficult to use (my arm get tired really fast). I prefer touchscreen on hybrid smile.gif

Based on spec alone, of course the Z400 blow the rest out of water. But it is not ultrabook, and maybe not light enough for you.

Yes, the Samsung and the Vivobook more or less has the same specs.

Personally, if I really have to buy a touch screen laptop right now (which I don't tongue.gif ), I will go with hybrid in the 11-12" range. I tried a few, the Taichi give me the most fun, the XPS12 give me the most confident smile.gif

2. Around 2k, I don't mind if it's a few hundred ringgit over-budget as long as it's a good deal (got to convince my dad)
3. Digital audio workshops, moderate gaming and possibly animating in the future
4. 15.6" is preferred but 14" is alright too

It's the first time I am getting a laptop so if there is some tips you think I need to know, well... just let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Z580, i7-3612QM + Nvidia GT640M@RM2299, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), freeDOS, white (cheapest i7 you can find. But need to get OS yourself)

Prices are RSP, negotiable (aim for RM100-200 discount).
If you are going for Dell, spend a bit ~ RM250+ to extend warranty to 3 years on site (Your dad will not grumble if laptop has problem since Dell will fix it next business day at your home after you make a call. Save your a*s*s until you can make and spend your own money smile.gif )
14" & 15" give you the same image (if same resolution at 1366x768). 15" has FHD (1920x1080) screen, but those models are out of your budget (cheapest is ~RM2.8k).
You may know that RAM is cheap (4G ~ RM80), and you could upgrade it aftermarket. It will not void the laptop warranty.
