Thanks for the info. Will the improved GPU be decent enough to play demanding games in lowest settings? If not then i dont think there's any reason for me to wait it i think?

Read with very very heavy pinch of salt, ok? smile.gif
Not all Haswell CPU will have the same IGPU, there are 3 version (current code name) GT1/2/3 (3 being the most powerful) (unlike the same HD 4000 in all Ivy Bridge).
And I don't think we will see GT3 in ULV or Y series CPU which is found in ultrabook smile.gif

Read these to understand why wide gamut screen (the one you cite) is good for pro photographer / art designer.
And generally, expensive wide gamut LCD panel like this has pretty good viewing angle.
Throw in the professional colour calibration that Illegear provided (for free some time), this is just killer screen for deodorant (much better than the uncalibrated IPS found in ZenBook).

Can anyone suggest me any notebook / ultrabook which is as light as possible, must lesser than 2kg, screen size between 13" and 14" , no need graphic card, no need SSD, more than 4 hour battery life, preferably  freedos but definitely no windows 8 RT, no need touch screen, budget 2k. Give me some recommendations as many as possible. So far only saw asus x series laptop rm899 but pentium processor not enough for me.
*
< 2kg, has to be ultrabook, or small screen size for normal laptop.
budget only RM2k, rule out most if not all of 13".
So you are left with 14" ultrabook.

Hey Guys,

I want to get laptop but don't know what is a good choice. The first laptop I got was a Acer that got spoiled within a year.

Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Anything except ACER that looks nice and with good international warranty if possible
2. Budget: 2000 is my highest ceiling, but would very much like something 1700 and below.
3. For uni, watching show, a little bit of gaming.. DCUO maybe CS if possible
4. 13"-14". Would consider a 15"
5. Don't want the laptop to be too heavy cause I need to carry it around.
*
Look nice or not is subjective smile.gif
Brands that has international warranty come as standard is Asus, and Lenovo (for certain models). If you upgrade Dell warranty to 3 years, it become International.
DCUO and CS is not (current gen) GPU demanding.
15" is normally nearer to 3kg. 13" is normally way over your budget. Left with 14".

Asus
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8
K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
K46CM-WX059V, i3-3217U + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, 4-cell battery, W7HP, OD

Dell (upgrade to 3 years on site warranty for ~ RM250+/-)
Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8
Inspiron 14R, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM1899[2.29kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

Lenovo (Z series is International warranty)
Z480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M@RM2099, 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm) W8, colors: grey/red/blue
G480, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1799, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS

Oh Thanks smile.gif BTW I want to ask, does mSATA behave the same speed like SSD? If I not wrong last time when I go one of the shop I checked WEI score for one of the Asus lappy with mSATA , but seems like no difference with the HDD speed.
*
Ok, let's clear up a few things here smile.gif
SATA is a channel (bus interface). New laptop normally come with v.3 (6 Gbit/s). It connect the laptop to HDD, SSD, ODD. m(icro)SATA is the smaller connector type for SATA, easier to fit into tighter space. mSATA or standard SATA connector of the same SATA version can operate at the same data transfer speed.

SSD is solid state drive. It has no moving parts, run cool, use less electricity. The slowest SSD still has much much faster data transfer rate than the fastest HDD. SSD can come in form factor that connect to standard SATA connector, or mSATA connector. So there is actually relatively large capacity SSD (e.g. 128G) that come in mSATA connector but generally they are more expensive than a standard SATA SSD of same capacity.

What you get confused is that some laptop come with normal HDD that connect to SATA port. At the same time, the laptop also has a mSATA port, and the brand slap a small SSD drive (typically 24G or 32G) onto it. Standard factory setting of the BIOS in this type of laptop is that OS, apps, files are all still being saved in the HDD, while the mSATA is being used purely for caching only (to speed up access of frequently used apps or files). If you try to look for the mSATA SSD from the OS file explorer, you could NOT even find it smile.gif Obviously then you won't see much different in the WEI score compared to a laptop that has only HDD connect to SATA port.

Hello All,

I would like to seek advise on getting a Laptop.

I will be travelling soon and will be away from home for 2 months. I need a laptop for high end gaming/multimedia/software/programming which requires good Graphics and processing power. Problem is the weight. I will be bringing along a work Laptop (2.4 kg) with my soon to be purchased laptop. Any suggestion? Most of the time will be carrying laptop bag when transit from airport etc

So far i am considering the below:
Lenovo
Y400, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M@RM2799, 4GB, 500GB, W8, 120wPSU, swappable ODD, 2.5kg

Is the above good enough?

Total weight will be around 5kg. not yet plus books and other stuffs.

Any suggestions for ultrabook/zenbook which can do almost the same as y400? So far the best graphics for an ultrabook is Nvidia 620.

Budget : Below RM3000
Brand  : Any
Usage  : high end gaming/multimedia/software/programming

Thanks biggrin.gif

4. Preferred laptop/screen size : Light weight, portable usage

Thank you.

You need RAM (8G or more), relatively powerful CPU (i5 or better, but even i3 could do). If you go for ultrabook, just need to make sure there are RAM slots for you to increase RAM.

Dell
Vostro 3360, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000@RM2249[1.67kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB; colors: red/silver/bronze

HP (this is an interesting business ultrabook, have a look even you don't want HP tongue.gif )
Pavilion dm3-1001TU (Folio 13), i5-2467M + Intel HD3000 + 128GB SSD@RM2999[1.49kg], W7HP

Illegear www.illegear.com 11.6"
R-11, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT650M@RM2999, 8GB, 500(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU options: i5-3210M-i7-3630QM]

Lenovo 11.6"
ThinkPad Edge E120, i3-2357UM + Intel HD3000@RM1999[1.5kg],W7HP, water resistant keyboard, Colors: Red/Black

Samsung
NP530U3C, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM2699[1.52kg], 4GB, W8

Sony
Vaio SVS13125CV, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M LE@RM3099[1.72kg], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W8; colors: maroon/white/black/pink; Vaio carrying case

Toshiba
PortƩgƩ R930-2001/R/B, i5-3210M + Intel HD4000@RM3099[1.4kg], 4GB, 640GB (7200rpm), W7HP; 3 years warranty, color: metallic black, red, blue

Prices are RSP, negotiable.
Increase RAM after market is cheap (4G stick ~ RM80), and usually will not void laptop warranty.

hi need recommendation for a new laptop.

1. preferred brand: Acer/Asus or any better one? AVOID HP, mac, samsung, sony.

2. budget is around rm2200-rm3000

3. focus on speed for web surfing and multitasking, design, lightweight (no more than 2.6kg), battery life (4hrs at least), 15.6 inch screen, window 7.

4. I dont play games.

Been considering on Acer v3 571 and Asus s56c. any opinion on these? or if ther's any better ones, do advice. thanks!
*
You want 15" and < 2.6kg? You do know 15" of 1366x768 screen resolution give you the same image as in 14" right? smile.gif
Acer
V5-571G-53314G50, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT620M@RM2199[2.3kg], 4GB, 500GB, W7HP
M3-581TG-53316G52, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT640M + 20GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM2699[2.25kg], 6GB

Asus
S56CM-XX090H i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M + 24GB mSATA + 500GB@RM2499[2.3kg], 2GB, W8; color: black

Dell
Inspiron 15R, i5-3337U + AMD HD7670M@RM1999[2.32kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8SL
Inspiron 15R, i7-3537U + AMD HD8730M@RM2949[2.32kg], 6GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8SL
Inspiron 15R, i7-3537U + AMD HD8730M + (1920x1980; anti-glare)@RM3299[2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8SL

Lenovo
Z500, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT645M @RM2299, 4GB, 1TB, W8; backlit, 2 years warranty (4-cell)
Z500 touch, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT645M + (1366x768; touch)@RM2699, 4GB, 1TB, W8; backlit, 2 years warranty

Among all these, only the Dell with the 6 cells battery option, could probably give you 4 hrs under normal usage.
The S56CM come with small battery. The Lenovo Z use M CPU, and also the battery is smallish.
Not sure about the Acer.
Good luck trying to look for new laptop that come with W7 laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif
If you multi-task a lot, get more RAM, 8G should be enough. 4G RAM stick is ~ RM80. Upgrade after market normally will not void warranty.
If you get onto net through wireless connection, to ensure good speed, look for good wireless chipset. The Dell 15R come with Intel N-2230, pretty ok. Not sure about the rest of the models. Atheros chipset is good, Broadcom is iffy.

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Btw, when you mentioned "design", what type of software you use?
If screen quality is important to you, suck in the weight, and opt for this:
V3-571G-736b8G1T, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT730M(DDR3) + (1920x1080 IPS) @RM2899[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8

You at least should tell us what you plan to use it for smile.gif

The GPU is decent enough for a lot of games in 1366x768, if bear in mind its limitation. But using that GPU to push FHD resolution is asking for trouble in lots of games laugh.gif

If you use it for multimedia, it is good. The FHD screen is good value for RM1.8k

The i5 is sandy bridge, but powerful enough for photoshop or simple video editing.

How long your laptop last is upon your tender loving care (keep it clean, keep it dust free inside out), and lots of luck laugh.gif

Since you did not mention the game titles you play, just going to recommend models with powerful GPU within your budget.

Asus
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8

Dell
Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8

HP
Envy4-1238TX, i5-3337U + AMD HD8750M@RM2099[Beats][1.75kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

Lenovo
Z480, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT640M@RM1999, 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm) W8, colors: grey/red/blue
Y400, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M@RM2799, 4GB, 500GB, W8, 120wPSU, swappable ODD

Prices are RSP, negotiable.
Use the remaining of your budget to increase RAM (Asus), extend warranty (Dell, 3 years on site).
