thanks for the recommendations! now Dell Inspiron 14R or 15R looks tempting... is it better to buy at Lowyat or Dell online?

when you say upgrade RAM and HDD, do you mean if i am to buy an i5 4GB 500GB at RM2049, i can ask them to upgrade to 8GB 1TB with +RM180? sorry i'm not familiar with these...

can we downgrade from W8 to W7? or we can just do it ourselves? what happens to the warranty if we do that?

thanks for your time!!
*
For Inspiron, make sure you look for the SE (special edition) smile.gif Look and spec differently.

No major difference where you buy it from. You can still negotiate when buy through Dell Online (use the online chat button).

Yes, you can upgrade the RAM and HDD by throwing in a bit of money. But using your 14RSE example (which has RSP of RM2049), you could negotiate with the re-seller to throw in the extra RAM and bigger HDD as "free" upgrade (while maintaining the same price) laugh.gif

Hardware warranty is not affected by OS you use smile.gif Anyway, give W8 a chance, it's a good OS.

This is so tempting . But is there customer service to swap the HDD to ODD and installing OS into the SSD ? The SSD can endure hot temperature ? The worst that could come from the heating issue is that the HDD may die  or the whole laptop will be  affected too ? Kinda newbie here .
*
Re-seller who carry the caddy may help you with the HDD to ODD swap. Installing OS? Talk to re-seller lah to see if they are willing to help.
Part of the reason of the hot temp is because of the HDD, it's trapped with no room to breath laugh.gif
With the SSD in the HDD bay, that hot spot disappear.
High temp is enemy to all electronic components. It make them die faster laugh.gif
For any laptop, please make sure you have good external cooling solution on hand (cooling pad, table fan ... )

Hi guys, recommendations for a laptop for my friend

1. Brand : Anything other than Sony, Acer or HP

4. Screen size : 14 or 15'
Plus : Preference for battery life of more than 3 hours

Thanks in advance guys!
*
What is moderate gaming? smile.gif Share some game titles please.
Most current gen laptop can give you ~ 3 hours under normal usage (surf web, watch video, ... ). But as soon as you game on it, count yourself lucky if you could get more than 2 hours out of your laptop laugh.gif
Laptop with the best GPU for your budget:

Asus
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8
N56VZ-S3151H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT650M@RM2799[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 750GB, W8; color: black

Dell
Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8

Which one is better in handling heat capacity?
*
As I said, ultrabook being skinny, has a lot less room to dissipate heat. Put it bluntly, none are good tongue.gif
Under normal usage, seems to hmmmm nicely. Once you start playing your Dota2, you will notice temp climb quickly.
Get cooling pad lah, ~ RM80 will do smile.gif

Thanks! For all I know he plays skyrim, new dlc is out! Battery life not for extended gaming time. Just for his studies at uni. More portable, won't have to sit around the power point.

Y580 very hard to find tho, wanted to buy it myself, a lotta places no stock. You have any idea where can get?
*
Skyrim is not medium gaming laugh.gif Install all the great mods, even GTX680M get brought down to its knee sweat.gif
Anyway, at 1366x768, medium setting, GT640M should do just fine.

So need to bring to uni? If he is willing to compromise a bit of gaming performance, then consider these ultrabook:
Asus
K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
HP (I know you don't want HP, but look at the specs tongue.gif )
Envy4-1204TX, i5-3337U + AMD HD8750M + 32GB mSATA +500GB(5400rpm)@RM2399[Beats][1.75kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

You can still find plenty of Y580, just not that spec at that prices tongue.gif
Ideapad Y580, i7-3610QM + Nvidia GTX660M (2GB) + (1920x1080) + Bluray@RM3499[JBL], 8GB, 1TB HDD(7200rpm), W7HP, backlit keyboard, 2 years international warranty
Have seen this going at RM31xx in LYP. Just make sure it is local set, ok? smile.gif

1. Preferred Brand : Lenovo, Asus

2. Budget RM2500 ~ RM3900

3. Usage Web Design, Photo Processing, Digital Painting, 3D, Gaming

4. Preferred laptop/screen size 15.6" is a MUST. Resolution of 1920 x 1080 is a MUST too. GPU must be nVidia. Best if the maximum memory capacity are @ 16GB max

Thanks!

All Ivy Bridge GPU so far has memory controller that support 32GB. If laptop can't support 16G (2x8G), it's due to BIOS most probably.

Please let us know what game titles you play, so that we can judge whether you need discrete GPU.
There is nothing 17" that is within your budget.
Anyway, below are models with most powerful GPU you can get within your budget.

Lenovo
Ideapad G580, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM1699, 2GB, 500GB, freeDOS, 1 yr warranty

I suggest you also look at 14". If screen resolution is the same at 1366x768, there is not much difference between 14" and 15".
G480, i3-3110M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS

4) screen size: 14"

You want laptop that is powerful enough to play latest game. What game titles? Far Cry 3? Minecraft? Both pretty latest you know smile.gif

And you also want something that is thin and light? Ultrabook usually don't have powerful GPU to play GPU demanding games.

14" ultrabook with most powerful GPU in Malaysia right now:

HP
Envy4-1204TX, i5-3337U + AMD HD8750M + 32GB mSATA +500GB(5400rpm)@RM2399[Beats][1.75kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

An interesting option is this 11.6"

Acer Malaysia don't give International Warranty as standard warranty, iinm. (I suspect that is grey import hmm.gif )

Anyway, if you really want FHD screen, the cheapest local set is this:
Dell
Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB, backlit keyboard optional, W8 (negotiate, and you will get it at the same price as the Acer. On site warranty smile.gif )

If you really want the Acer, the price is ok for the spec.
