Planning on upgrading my laptop soon, need recommendations.

1. Anything but not Apple since it's too pricey
2. below 2.5k
3. Video editing, moderate gaming (games like league of legends, dota 2), watching movies.
4. 14" would do but any other sizes are welcomed too.

Another point is that I would prefer it to last long since I'm gonna study in India for 5 years and hope it last that long (optimistic ~_~)

Thank you in advance! smile.gif

haha, apple is not in that budget range. apple needs at least RM4k. laugh.gif
however, your laptop options :

ASUS A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8
Dell Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8
Lenovo Z400, i7-3632QM + Nvidia GT645M@RM2699, 4GB, 1TB, W8; backlit, 2 years warranty
Lenovo Ideapad Z580, i7-3612QM + Nvidia GT640M@RM2299, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), freeDOS, white

price is RSP and negotiable. for the ASUS, negotiate with the seller for RAM upgrade to 4GB. im wondering, why dont you buy at India and have warranty coverage at there? maximum warranty coverage in Malaysia is 3 years for most laptops. some more, warranty claiming can only be done in malaysia, not in India.

  1. Preferred Brand: Microsoft, Samsung, Asus, Dell, etc.
  2. Budget: < 5K
  3. Usage: Programmer
  4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 13"-15"

Looking for something of premium build quality, hopefully with a good screen. Currently using Vostro 3400. Is there no affordable, no-nonsense laptop with a good screen?

What I've been looking at:
  • Microsoft Surface Pro
  • Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A
  • Samsung Series 9 (NP900X3C)
  • Dell XPS 13

All of them have the RAM soldered on sweat.gif

1. No specific preference for a brand. As long as its not Acer or Apple, i would be happy. I've had my fair share of history with Acer, and i dislike Mac OS's.

2. Rm 3000 (Probably my maximum, but i think i can stretch a little from there. However, Rm 3000 is optimum.)

3. Main usage will be browsing the web and university assignments. Oh, did i mention gaming ?? Yes, i'm planning to game on it, quite a bit. So something powerful would be great.

4. Preferably 14" or 15.6".

I will be gaming on the laptop. Playing on high or ultra settings, for the games i play, with a smooth fps would be a godsend. However, seeing as how low my budget is, i would understand if it could only run the game on low or medium settings. My previous laptop was a Acer 5750G. However, the heat problems and a few others that occurred, has pretty much left that laptop of mine in a bad shape. The recent motherboard repair, had the technician informing me that my laptop is considered unstable. Hence, no further repairs should be made.

The preferences listed here is an added bonus, if the laptop has these specifications while still remaining under the budget, or slightly over, that would be amazing.

- i7. Preferably 3rd Generation.
- GTX graphic card. However, looking at the miserable budget, i highly doubt this is possible at all. So a good GT6XX would be great.
- Something higher that 4GB RAM if possible.
- I personally do not mind a 5k rpm HDD, as long as there is more that 500GB.
- A laptop that doesn't heat-up like hell. A laptop with good cooling is quite an important criteria for me. However, i understand the limitations of a laptop's cooling capabilities. I just want to see your recommendations.
- I will be planning to lug around the laptop. So something light would be nice. However, the weight will be the least of my concerns for the laptop.

On a final note, i dont exactly play games that are extremely demanding. Much of old games like GTA:SA. However, i noticed my old Acer ran into difficulty every now and then running Skyrim and GTA:4. I will probably end up playing League of Legends on it. Thanks, i'm anxious to hear from you. Sorry about the long message/stupidity of the requests. icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

I was looking through the Y400 and Y500 and i noticed a lot of complaints about the trackpad and the heat problem. I found a good deal for the Y580 that lies in my budget however the seller has yet to get back to me.

1. Preferred Brand: Any.
2. Budget:3k max
3. Usage: no gaming. assignment. photoshop, illustrator, flash, programming. And of course, bluray movies. Must be portable so nothing heavier than 1.7kg.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 13"-14"

I've had my eyes on Asus UX32VD. But, if I drop in 128GB SSD, how much that will cost? And will it damage the warranty? And,what's with all the complaints I've heard about Asus bad service?

yes it is better in terms of cooling. about ASUS after sales service, yes it is bad. however, at notebookcheck reviews, the GT730M is about on par with the GT650M.

THere's no real point in getting the UX32 if you are not into gaming at all nod.gif
For 1080p movies the UX31A ZenBook would be the better pick but its unfortunately out of your budget hmm.gif

For your budget, try going for this one instead:
13"
HP [Ultrabook] Envy SpectreXT 13-2215TU, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM2899[1.39kg], 4GB, W8,backlit keyboard

*Use remaining money to extend warranty to 3 years~

Putting in an SSD will not void the warranty as long as you don't damage the notebook within the process nod.gif
As for the complaints, read here: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2337458
