er.. u're a fresh grad of nautical studies? Dude get a sponsor then u sail on board as a deck cadet work ur seatime then u'll know. If u're from ALAM then sad to say u earn RM lor and not that high anyways. But u gotta start somewhere. If u're from Singapore Poly, then more chances u'll be with NOL ( if they still run that program). then u'll be paid in USD ( or maybe now changed to SGD oledi) and the pay is much higher and you gain more experience than those who sail on MISC vessels.

I might be biased but then it's the truth, MISC cadets dun learn much compared to NOL cadets. As most MISC cadets are pampered form what i've seen.

As for the work schedule it depends on the company you sign with. If for example (I'm using my own experience) you sail with NOL you will sail for say 6 months at a time after which you get 1 to 2 months paid leave depending on the type of vessel you sail on (Tanker or Container vessels). You can also extend your stay on a vessel 2 months at a time. This was of course done more than 10 years ago since I first started sailing.

Honestly sea life is not for everyone. But its one helluve exciting life and the experience which you cant buy and the best thing is you will know how to survive and how to deal with people. So kudos for passing out but as for the salary range for a marine navigator it would depend on your C.O.C. and company you work for and also the type of vessels u sail on.

can IT ppl join O&G company??

Why not? Lots of oil and gas companies, including oil and gas service companies have loads of data to manage, run servers round the clock around the world, their own staff's IT services to manage, etc.

QUOTE(christine85 @ Apr 15 2008, 08:28 AM)
haha... you got some point there, but i would say that O&G is certainly far more better than lots of other industry outside.

For other companies:
1. fresh grads' avg salary 2k
2. no allowance
3. stick in the lab/factory/ office as well
4. doing same thing over and over again--->boring & no life
5. Some job need u to work more than 10hours per day but only get half og the pay given by O&G companies
6. risk in some jobs, eg: chemist--> exposed to chemical stuffs. if explode accidently, also die--> life's a fate, if destinied to die, sure will die regardless of how, where and why.
7. After 30 years, pension, not even enough for the rest of the life, think about goin travelling? better dreams when sleeping

NO MONEY---> DUN EVER SICK, if sick, better die directly than suffer
---> No dreams, no big houses, no fancy cars, nth to enjoy, imagine, born into this world eg: for 70years, doin nth but study, work,
nth to enjoy, no money for travelling etc
---> Wan to own a business after working for 10years? think again and plan. money? experience in business?
---> dun even think of want to give family a better life, no money no talk

There are certainly many industry which u could earn a lot, eg
1.network marketing, but too many ppl have negative view on it, pandek kata, coward malaysians, especially, dun even dare to know what it is.. some even say tat its a scam, cheat ppl's money etc.. sorry, system=dead, onlp ppl cheat ppl. so nth's wrong
2. Insurance, need to find customers, some ppl dun even know how to talk
3. Financial planner, more or less need to find customers also
4. business, no money no talk
5. etc

Life is not only about urself. how about ur family? ur parents? your future kids? Its about responsibility. Sometimes u need to sacrifice in order to get sth better in your life. Like kevinling said, no pain, no gain. This is one of the industries which makes u really tough, both mentally and physically, at least you're paid with all the 'pain' u gain through out the process. i believe if one could survive in this industry, he or she will be able to survive in other industries as well. Hence, why complain when O&G trainu to be better and gives u money, thus, dreams and better life etc.? laugh.gif and not all ppl work for rest of their life in O&G. It is also a stepping stone and financial foundation source for your other future planning.

Yup, Waremastr's outlook on life is too narrow leh... There are 1001 ways to die, drive your car in KL, can also easily die wut... Just pay enough attention during your Helicopter Underwater Evacuation Training and Basic Offshore Safety & Emergency Training, then you'd be all right laa. The rest is all just fate...

Taking my last survey, just TD the well out here in Qatar's finest location - middle of the dessert! Cheerios...

Hi Kevin & Christine,

Yes - I am with BH INTEQ. LWD field engineer based in Qatar, on rotational. Life's good, but USD depreciation affected nearly everyone in this region dealing with Oil & Gas! I call it involuntary pay cut... Sigh...

Well, soon you both will join the ranks in SLB, and I can only wish you both the best. Oh yeah, safety driving courses, offshore safety and helicopter emergency training - you'll love those things...

I am getting so weary of tomorrow's prospect, rigging down...

Guys, i'm supposed to go for this 'offshore medical' soon as I just got an offer. My question is, how different is this 'offshore medical' compared to a normal company medical? Apparently it's gonna be done at KLCC or thereabouts from doctors certified by clients (Shell, Petronas maybe). Also heard that this is where the doctor grabs your balls and gets you to start coughing (gasps) cry.gif ... is this true?

it's a bit different from the normal check up..the medical assessments as listed below:

1) urine check
2) BMI calculation
3) blood pressure
4) eye sight/hearing test
5) lung test
6) ECG
7) X-Ray
8) Blood test

i'm not sure bout the 'grab your balls' thingy..but yes, the doc will ask you to show the balls and cough a bit...however i still can't figure out the reason of doing this.. tongue.gif

all in all,it was a very long process and usually it takes 2-3 hours, depends on what day are u going..so i guess u'll be doing the check up at Young & Newton in Lebuh Ampang? no worries bro, u'll be fine.. icon_rolleyes.gif

It's all myth laa... I had done this three times in total now, once in KL, another in Germany and lastly in Scotland. None of them have such examination involving genetalia. Basically, some offshore rigs serve up so much porn on their TV network onboard, you can pretty much check your system is functional or not by yourself!!! Some Kazahkstan rigs, will even supply you onsite gals!!! I know these stories doesn't sound professional here, or even sexist (pardon me ladies), but they are not too far fetch from the the truth... Just make sure you bring along copies of this medical examination cert (NOGEPA, OPITO, OLF certified) everywhere, coz you might not know when you need it. Else, you would need to draw more blood elsewhere...

Are you high? Why would the doctor want to grab your hairy balls? For fun? LOL

I tell you my experience at Young & Newton doctor and parents (something like that). urine drug test, blah blah blah, come to a point, the doctor ask me do i smoke, yes, how many pack, 1 pack for 2 days, can you stand near the wall (he point his finger), i moved there, can you take off your shirt, i took off my shirt, you pants, my pants off, and also underwear, i pull it down to tell him that i am a normal healthy man, can you turn around, i turned, can you try to cough, i cough, ok that's all, i'm done and leave, it took me about 3~4 hours because there is a lot of tests going on also. I believe there is no point of graping my balls to know whether it is fake or what.

But please make damn sure no weed for atleast 2 weeks to be safe before the appointment. If long term user will surely need more longer time. The drug test of course not only limit to weed only.

ermm... when i was in the states my medical examination doesnt involve touching my balls... however into my 2nd month of working i was suspected of having STD, so i went onto a company sponsored medical centre and the doc examine my balls and stick...

he was doing the check up like nothing special then a black nurse (very big size) came in and commented 'ooh.. that's a small one, take care now" and i was like mad.gif vmad.gif shocking.gif but after that she was very friendly and wish me well...

crapster was referred to KLCC, so most probably is TTMC, the only one. Do you try TTMC before? smile.gif

I went to do my first medical checkup at Young & Newton, three years ago, it is exactly like what you said, and my second checkup at TTMC.

Do you think I'm joking here?

LOL... I still think there is no need of touching balls, the point of seeing balls is just to make sure you are male, not shemale, or in between. That's my point of view. If a female checker still ok, but a male is a big no no, dont even come near me, my balls will shrink and go back inside biggrin.gif

good, you also mentioned that is your own point of view, but NOT the perspective from doctor.

Your offshore safety passport valid for 3 years, after that, please select TTMC for your next station, have "fun" there rclxm9.gif

I'm going to be interning at the end of this year...want to break into the black gold field. Any tips on where to start? I'm looking through various O&G companies and checking out their internship/training programmes and have so far applied at Schlumberger based on a friend's testimonial working there. However, my university wasn't listed on their website so I had to put Other. Any other place where I can get started?
