I'm going to be interning at the end of this year...want to break into the black gold field. Any tips on where to start? I'm looking through various O&G companies and checking out their internship/training programmes and have so far applied at Schlumberger based on a friend's testimonial working there. However, my university wasn't listed on their website so I had to put Other. Any other place where I can get started?

Global Offshore, TL Offshore, Mcdermott
Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, Haliburton

General Electric Oil n Gas, Aramis, Dialog.......

tons of them !!!!

That's a lot of choices...but are they all overseas companies? I dare not set my sights too high, was hoping to get placement somewhere in Malaysia but I don't really know the proper way.

So far I have explored some companies website such as Exxonmobil and Cameron and found that all of them have online systems where you submit in a resume. I'm still a student, haven't had working experience yet so I don't know what to include in my resume. Anybody been down this road before and can share or point me in the right direction?

Sorry if I give the impression of trying to be spoonfed. I'm merely thinking that it would be wise to learn from other people's experiences, that's what I am looking for.

No, I don't think oil will deplete in 2008. What you are looking for is the word peak oil, where production peaks and after that oil production figures will only go down. It's a slower slide towards anarchy than having your oil resources gone overnight, =)

thanks christine! I'm confident, I'm just talking about overseas companies in the sense of applying for internship overseas. Anyway, I see your point. You did internship at shell before? Where is that? In Port Dickson? May I know what steps you took to land the gig? Thanks in advance, just trying to learn the ropes here.

Thanks for the insight christine. Just one more question, how to apply? I am confused as to the division between East and West Malaysia for Shell application...my friend interned at PD which is WM and when I asked him, he said to apply online through the website but when I visit the website, I get lost in it.

Basically, do I need to choose whether to apply for East or West Malaysia and can apply for both or I just submit one application and they will determine the placement? How did you apply?

I applied for Shell through their website but I didn't get it....very disappointed now. I'm really interested in getting an internship with them and then going back to Borneo to work there where my home is, but that's no longer the case. Anybody know about any Shell subsidiaries operating in Sabah?

It sucks that they did not provide a reason for the rejection. I suspect it's to do with my ill-preparation of my resume (I left out some important details). It would have been better if they have replied with some reason for rejection so I know where to improve on next. Oh well...

I applied for their Student Internship position along with my classmate. Both our CGPA together was around 3.5x (as of the time of appliction, because we are still 2nd year 2nd sem) but he got to interview and I was rejected flat out. Sad. And my Co-co experience was more cos I involved myself in more activities on the SRC but apparently that didn't count.

Oh, damn. Too bad. I was looking at a place called Petronas Penapisan Melaka Sdn Bhd. Are they a part of Petronas or just a subsidiary? Can I apply directly to this company for internship or are they also only accepting UTP scholars?

Yea...but unfortunately I was rejected by Shell. I think I highlighted this a few posts back. I was really keen on working with Shell, but I didn't make the cut. What's more, my friend with nearly identical qualifications got the interview. I can't apply online again for another 12 months.

I'm thinking of sending a resume & CV to somebody in charge. Can anybody provide a name & tel number of the HR person in charge of internships (hopefully in Sabah or Swak)? I'll write in directly to request for the internship. hunterorz, perhaps your friend can share with me the contact details of the instructor in charge of his programme? Thanks if you can man.

Thanks hunter. I've looked into both companies recommended by you and they are pretty interesting. Air Products do offer industrial placements but MOX did not specify, although I wrote to their HR seeking clarification.

I think I'm more interested in upstream...because we are an oil producing country so it's natural. Oilfield services is also nice, because they support the people in the upstream market so both of them are related to a certain extent. I realize that many O&G companies are not really seeking fresh graduates, preferring people with experience or am I wrong on this observation?

BTW, any other companies to recommend? Like MOX or Air Products, something that is related to O&G but not necessarily an O&G company...I haven't given much thought on that aspect of the industry.

MOX and air product are competitor with market ratio of 65% (MOX) to 35% (air product)... so, MOX is much bigger than air product in malaysia....  btw,mox got offer internship everyyear...

wat course u taking now? chemical eng or mechanical?
O&G Upstream like to take fresh graduate, everyyear they will hire ppl frm time to time.... so,dont forget to watch out the newspaper and advertisement.....

U can try consulting company like accenture as well, their paid for fresh grad is rm3500 and rm1000 for internship trainee, the drawback is u hv to sit at office for a very long long hours.... ppl there are workaholic....

I'm currently doing a B.Eng in Manufacturing Engineering. I haven't graduated yet, so I'm just looking for internship placement for the end of this year. If I can get one from the O&G industry then that'd be great in helping me get into this industry. Consultancy companies also take in fresh grad/interns? I was under the impression that consultancy only hire people with experience cos I'd rather trust the advice of somebody experienced than a newbie right? Just my 2 sen, haha.

Haha, I'm not discouraged, after all it's just hard work. Repetition...use AHK scripts =P. What consultancy companies are there related to O&G?

I just received an offer to intern with MMC Oil & Gas. They offered me a position in the Project Management/Engineering department. Any idea what the department is involved in? Anybody else with experience working at MMC?
