I see, thanks for enlighten me... thumbup.gif
i thought FISH ONLY and FOWLR is two different things  laugh.gif

How long can marine fish live without filter/air pump/skimmer???
Any of you install somekind of back-up battery or power generator to support your marine tank equipment in case of blackout???
*
No worries, man. Have u ever face the blackout problem more than 1 day? The Fish & corals actually can survive in the tank within 24 hours, they r tougher than goldfish laugh.gif

I think, nobody ever brave enough to keep the marine fish without air pump/ filter/ protein skimmer. It's because if they do, the fish might survive but not beautiful grown.

rclxm9.gif vary, depends type of fish, tank setup, size of tank, condition of water, most of all how your fish already used to adapt.
4-8hours, some people will use battery with manual or auto cut over.
i just use a dc pump, when detected blackout, battery pump will auto start to provide oksigen

Hi,

I am looking for a 2nd hand 6 feet tank and chiller, but must be reasonable price. I already set up my 4 ft tank last month... smile.gif And another 2 ft tank this month... Have about 13 fishes and also coral reefs and live rocks...

But i found out that the live stocks that available in market is very expensive. Anyone can suggest to me where I can get better deals on all the saltwater stuffs and live stock?

Cheers,
Steven Eng

coral should be ok for 24hours, shipment transport around the globe just in plastic bags. however certain fish and invertebrates stay in our tank with skimmer and high oksigen, suddenly stop for too long will kill them, always good decision not to keep too many inhabitants if don't have backup plan. icon_rolleyes.gif

i heard puchong oceanic n ikano have nice deals compared to megamall.

yea i 2nd alex's comment that live stock in malaysia is cheap. In malaysia blue tang is RM30+ but in USA a blue tang will cost 30$. Clownfish RM10, in US its 10$. Basing this price on my local stores n liveaquaria.com

Huhu...thanks for the feedback bros thumbup.gif Actually i dont really have frequent black-out problem...
it just that my job sometimes required me to travel up to a week and nobody left at home...
I'm worry if heavy lightning/thunder may activate the circuit breaker and cut the power supplies whenever i'm not at home.. sweat.gif

Mmmm, i'm an internal auditor actually ph34r.gif tongue.gif
Sometimes the client is abroad and the assignment may take up to 2 weeks to be honest rclxub.gif
Still assessing whether i should venture into this marine hobby since no one can help me look after the tank if i'm not around... cry.gif
Power break-out is my concern at the moment...

My other concern is water parameter....what parameter can drastically change (marine tank) within a week or two in case i'm not at home???

no you don't, especially with air stone in reef tank should be avoid unless just backup plan for short time.

backup ac pump can support up to 24hrs incase blackout, anyhow you have the same concern as me, i can be away for months, last month was away for 2wks, chiller spoil cause serious damage but was lucky enough some frs to swap a chiller for me and bring it for fixing.

as i always said, bigger tank is more forgiving and bigger tank you can have bigger sump, can put ca reactor, sulphur reactor and big refugium which will all contribute in keeping your water parameter intact even if you are away for 2 wks or more. just don't keep target feeding coral like rhyzo, supersun etc.

I just setup my saltwater tank yesterday...due to resource constraint, i just start with decent FOWLR 20gl tank...
Bought myself
- 2ftx1ftx1.5ft tank,
- hydrometer,
- marine salt 4kg
- testkit (ammonia, NO3, PH),
- HOB filter with surface skimmer (set 100% water sucked from the skimmer to act like overflow system sweat.gif )
- Protein skimmer with air pump

Now cycling the tank with saltwater. water parameter @ the moment:-
- Ammonia 0
- Nitrate 20ppm
- Gravity around 1.021
- PH 8.5
- temperature hovering around 26-27c

To speed up the cycling process a bit (i guess):
- I use my freshwater tank filter media
- also put activated carbon and used bio-ring in the filter
- i premix 50% of the water with used water from my freshwater tank (that's why i got nitrate 20ppm)... rclxub.gif
However if any of the above is not advisable, do let me know.... notworthy.gif

I'm thinking to get live rock this afternoon at ikano..there are selling RM12/kg..
i dont know if its cured but they keep it in the saltwater tank and not smelly..
And should i put live sand as substrate at this stage..which one first? live sand or live rock?? sweat.gif

Evrae90,
actually i was inspired by your setup thumbup.gif . nice that u manage to keep some coral in a small tank.. notworthy.gif
Did u used any powerhead inside the tank for water circulation??
I wanna put one in mine but afraid will raised the water temp coz i dont used any chiller sweat.gif

What's the normal price for marine salt?? bought mine at RM33 for 4kg...
since going to used quite often, is there any cheaper brand/option available...
I just wanna start with FOWLR first, if this succeed then consider to get coral...

for sand u can straight put in, ur rocks too just throw it in. not necessary to add live sand. n furthermore im not sure if ppl sell live sand.

not necessary to get live sand in my opinion, unless u can get it cheap n easily.
just get suitable sand for saltwater. mine 40% coarse sand at the base, n 60% fine sand on top.
the sand will become live after u add bacteria n it grow n will colonize ur sand in time.

btw i got no corals in my tank at the moment. in my 20G i do have a powerhead 500gpi italian made. china brand powerhead cheap
but will boil your fish. try it first, my lfs was kind enuf to let me change.

for salt i bought mine at rm7/kg, maybe not as good quality.
for water change maybe u can do less haha n get away with it, depends on u to try n experiment. i know some forumer said he didnt do water change for 3 years lol.

i see...Anyway, bought 3kg of live rock today and straight away throw it into my tank sweat.gif ....haven't bought any sand yet, perhaps tomorrow...
how much this bacterial additive normally cost?

lol my tank is small thats why lighting is not such a big problem.

and just an advice, when you get your sand, remove your live rock, add the sand then only add the rock.
the sand will cushion your rock, thus reducing chance of damage to your tank base.

bacteria im using a china brand, RM15 but if american or other brands might be more expensive.
so far so good.

for anemone you might want to wait a while til your tank is established because:
1) to ensure good water condition
2) since you're traveling you might not be able to monitor your tank which is crucial in the initial stages
3) if your anemone dies in your absence, your tank will get f****d up real bad.
4) you will regret smelling a dead anemone

anyways what fish are you planning to get bro? im planning on getting a pair of clarkii clowns the black and yellow based ones, a tiny blue tang and maybe a firefish.
going to ikano next month to check out live stock there.

your pump might be too strong also can consider making a hang on back sump to hide ur skimmer and have return pump push the water back to your main tank, outlet can use a hydor bioflo, also fire goby like to jump when got shock, better have some corner cover
