I believe you can switch it on or off (live updating of your apps) because it involves data usage. (on an unrelated note, WP8 has data sense, where you can monitor your data usage easily and even set a limit so that it does not exceed the udage - but it must be supported by the carrier. Perhaps you can set it to zero, no usage allowed).
In my opinion, if you are not on data plan, just using prepaid, at least go the settings and look for network/connection. Usually it is set as "dual mode" by default (the other options are 3G mode or GSM only). Switch it to GSM only so that your phone never tries to search for 3G networks whenever available - it can save you a lot of battery usage.
you can switch off 3g/lte data connection if you afraid it would use up a lot. but at the moment, the wifi turn off when lock still exist in wp8 so the 3g/lte data connection may serve as backup in receiving live tiles updates
I do watch the preview by Joe Belfiore mentioned the data usage could be managed efficiently by the device compressing the website. is it the new features by WP8? how good to be true, since im plan to use the pre-paid plan

that's Data Sense, but at the moment it still unavailable & it's carrier dependent.

Most reported battery problems were caused by NFC. Turn that off and it will save you heaps.
Some has reported that after 3 days, with full battery cycle etc, the battery life has improved a bit. My 4s doesn't last me a day so I'm used to charging the phone all the time. That's why I will have to buy the charging plate and the stand (one for home and one for the office). the problem is I think those accesories will come in late. I've been reading that the accesories availability is abyssimal.

Well, I'm not that heavy user and as long as battery last until uni lecture over or the whole day, it's ok for me. Besides, I do have Yoobao 11200 mAh with me during traveling
Saudi is a tad cheaper than UAE prices. It will be equivalent to RM2050 (SAR2499) which for a 32GB with all the specs is just cheap. I paid SAR3650 for the 64GB iPhone 4s ....
