My modem and router is on timer. Auto off at 1.30am and auto on at 6am 24/7. So far no restart problem.

However, the disadvantages outweighs any conceivable savings in electricity or purpose.

Well that's good sign. Now you have a valid excuse to get a router upgrade from maxis. Just got mind replaced weeks ago. rclxms.gif

Yes. Use the external timer.

The advantages of having timer to auto off the router and modem when not in use are as follows:

1. Reduce the chance of power surge damage while you are sleeping.
2. Router and modem gets a fresh restart every morning.
3. Limit the time to deter the wifi key hacking software.
4. Save energy, save money.
5. Force discipline to stop surfing and go to sleep. rclxms.gif

To those who are interested to know the power consumption of TM modem and Thomson router.

TM modem 4.4w
Thomson router 8.8w (total 13.2w)
Aztech Dect phone 0.5w (total 13.7w)
Laptop cooler 2.8w (total 16.5w)
Total annual electricity consumption in kw/h: 16.5w x 24hr x 365days / 1000 =144,540
Total TNB bill based on 33.4 sen per unit catergory is: RM48.28
Total TNB bill based on 40 sen per unit catergory is: RM57.82

Really, it is up to you to use the auto-timer or not.
If you are comfortable using it, no harm done.
Just like using usb fan/laptop cooler for modems/routers, no harm done

just discussing only....

Disadvantages:
1) auto timer effectively hard/cold reset your equipments everyday due to thermal stress.
ask any electrician/engineer/computer hardware expert, it shortens the lifespan.

2) The initial capital outlay of the auto timer (approx RM20.00)
according to rough calculations, it takes 2 years to pay back.

3) People complains about ip renewals disconnection of 4-8 seconds
you purposely "disconnects" it for few hours everyday. How ironic.

===================
Now to your advantages.
1. Reduce the chance of power surge damage while you are sleeping.
I didn't know power surges when you are sleeping, it this something new?
You should buy a surge protector instead.
btw, power surges everytime an appliance is turned on/off.

2. Router and modem gets a fresh restart every morning.
Cold reset everyday shortens the lifespan of your equipments.
They are machines, not humans! doh.gif

3. Limit the time to deter the wifi key hacking software.
This is a made up morality issue I do not wish to dwelve into.
Like saying if you don't have money, you won't get rob.

4. Save energy, save money.
You save energy, yes, but only minimal according to your calculations.
But you wasted money to replace the equipment sooner and wasted precious time.

5. Force discipline to stop surfing and go to sleep.
Seriously?! anyone needs at least 6-8 hours of sleep everyday.
you do not need an auto-timer to discipline yourself.
========================

If you are really concern about green earth,
consider throwing less rubbish instead. icon_rolleyes.gif

@duckaton,
I always believe in turning on when it's necessary. Machines are built by Human. Human needs rest, so do Machines.

There's always MTBF for all IT equipments.... so the longer you run it, the quicker it dies.

The WIFI signal of the Maxis Residential Gateway Modem (Technicolor Gateway=TG784n v3) is very poor signal if compare with my previous UNIFI-D-Link (custom flashed with DD-WRT). Any solutions beside using homeplugs...? notworthy.gif

Well, I sacrifice my Maxis VOIP service for this setup.
So If I want use the DECT-PHONE, need to re-setup Technicolor(Thomson) back again.
