is the adapter regulated ?
if not, it's better to put around 9V coz i tested with multimeter when it was at 16V when it's set at 12V !!!
so better becareful with that

Easiest way is to get two 2006 phonebooks (FOC) to lift up the lappie to ensure adequate airflow for the intake fan. tongue.gif no problems with heat, folding 24/7 with a celeron non mobile 2.6ghz

nice but too tall. should make the front portion of the leg lower. can reduce rsi and also increase air flow since the exhaust air is behind and hot air rises.

try to make a acrylic stand with some LEDs sure make the blink out of it

usb gives u 5v only, while adapter will give u 12v, means u'll get the fan spin stronger biggrin.gif

it depends, i pick adapter coz my lappy USB slot is full edi, thts the main reason, while i'm using a variable adapter so the fan can be adjusted (1.5v, 3v, 4.5v, 6v, 7.5v, 9v, 10.5v, 12v)

thanks for all, and my new notebook cooler is finished, will post pic when i get my dc, very soon brows.gif

Great job, nice design and congrats on achieving your target, providing cooling to the places needed to be cooled and not somewhere random smile.gif rclxm9.gif

Merely just an input, since we are talking abt laptops.

Is there anyway we can add a battery pad (also known as external battery) at the bottom of our laptop and add fan built-in with it powered by the laptop's power cable, meaning power cable into the pad and charge it as well as power to the fans. Pads will be connected to the power inlet of the laptop to power it. Thus we will be able to have extended power along with air circulation too.

Below is an example of a battery pad along with the charger set.

You should consider making it slightly sloping, having the horizontally flat, it would be rather uncomfortable right?

it's simple icon_idea.gif

1) measure ur laptop for buying acrylic, find out ur notebook heat area so tht ur fan is designed at the heat area

2) choose the amount of fan n size u wan (i take 12cm fan as it's silent n has great airflow)

3) buy adapter, either 500mAH, 800mAH or 1000mAH, the higher the greater ur fan will run when u full load it

4) take ur fan n goto those shop which sells arcylic (i used 2.5mm thick arcylic, 3mm oso can), tell him ur idea n give him the fan for reference

5) make sure u do not miss out the hole for screws when the shop makes the blowhole, every blowhole n screw hole is done by the seller

6) now arcylic kaodim, go buy the red rubber tube (any size as long as taller than the fan) n screw w nuts for the red rubber tube

7) screw them all, cut ur fan n adapter wire, connect it to the fan n remember to use tape to wrap the joint part, n u r done

normally shops which sells arcylic are those DIY shops right? they'd also be able to cut the blowhole for me as well right? cause i have no idea how to make a blowhole to fit my fans. if i'm planning to use 2 12cm fan one at bottom right the other at upper left of the board, how much of an adapter capacity should i be using? tongue.gif this is getting interesting

i did it at my hometown, doesnt know any shops here doin the service while selling arcylic, but normally they do tongue.gif

y put so many fan? end up only noisy, bulky, fan not strong, dusty n expensive, but performance wise, only increase a little bit oni doh.gif just put to the main heat part, processor n hdd is more than enuf already

normally outside u'll get 1000mAH adapter max

becoz i'm not as rich as u all, so i hv to make DIY cooler tongue.gif

1st stage - feb2005
user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

Material Used n Cost:
3x 8cm fan = FOC (spoil psu)
wood= FOC (from my relatives)
adapter= FOC (found inside my house) tongue.gif
TOTAL - FOC

Performance
not 100% satisfied coz the fan position is not correct to blow the hdd, it's still hot when  BT at high speed... other parts r cooled very well, n the fan speed is adjustable through adapter

_____________________________________________________________________

now got $ a bit, so 2nd stage - feb2006
user posted imageuser posted image

Material Used & Cost:
2x 12cm fan - RM13 each
arcylic casing - RM20
red color rubber tube - RM4
adapter - RM10
TOTAL - RM60

Performance
i rate it 100% effective compare to the cooler outside, the fan position is just under the heat area, all are cooled very well n very silent, only it's still bulky

_____________________________________________________________________

3rd stage - july2006, new laptop mar
[attachmentid=127928][attachmentid=127926]

Material Used & Cost:
12cm fan - RM13
arcylic casing - RM15
red color rubber tube n screws - RM5
adapter = RM10
TOTAL - RM43

Performance
100% great as well, more portable, n lower cost
anyone who has DIY notebook cooler, dun paise, let the rich people know we r BOLEH!  flex.gif  tongue.gif  tongue.gif  tongue.gif

Thx bro yeah is my 1st time!!
The weight is more or less the same as the normal raw metal cooling pad(def not aluminium/plastic)!
The wood i'm using is not very heavy(trible decker wood) (is it call this unsure.gif ??)
And i don't care abt the weight of the pad act ,because i'm not going to carry it from place to place . I name it as a static cooling pad smile.gif smile.gif !

Wondering to make a stage 2 project, after knowing (betty's) works it is amazing and is value also!! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

That's a really nice job there bro... thumbup.gif
But, i think you should paint the blowhole or cover it with some carbon fibre sticker u've used earlier...

Why?
Because the wood look on the blowhole is kinda .................. sweat.gif

Just my opinion though... notworthy.gif

This concept is more interesting I think.... like turbo boosting existing lappy cooler rather than just cooling plastic.

I think he removed the molex connector.
Then he stick all the red wires together and the black wires together to the power adaptor.

done mine. curi2 some idea from this thread. using USB port as power supply 5volt only, the fan is not fast enough. manage to reduce 6C.

the fan was set up to suck out the hot air. small holes was made to vent out the hot air from the side.

using cutter. available in your local bookstore. just draw the circle using a drawing compas (the one with both needle). then use the cutter to cut it step by step and it damn hard to do.

hi sorry no digicam currently, but will describe as detail as possible

basically is cutting the adapter connector as well as the fan's, then connect them together and use electronic plaster to tape them

i used to connect the adapter like the pic below, sorry for the bad drawing tongue.gif

With adaptor can archieve 12v for higher fan speed.
With usb only 5v which result in slower speed. Am I right?
My friend said using adaptor waste of electricity.

for the usb power source. If you open the USB cable. you will get 4 small wire inside. Green, white, black and red. Ignore the White and green. We will be using the black and red wire. connect the wire to your fan... and you are done... wink.gif

Just to add, USB can only supply maximum 5V at 500mA per port. So make sure your current consumption doesn't exceed the specified rating (500mA). If exceeded, any of these can happen:
- nothing happen (your USB port is out of spec)
- overcurrent triggerred, shuting off USB voltage circuit to avoid further damage.
- you've burn your USB port.

I don't know whats the different between perspex and acrylic. and the guy who sell me the transparent stuff said it wasn't acrylic. and acrylic is more expensive.

So, this is my cooling pad, and this is the 1st time I DIY stuff for my computer.
user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

Materials used:
12" x 14" transparent perspex RM 22 ( including making the hole by the guy who sell me
Fan RM 0 (from broken PSU)

Currently, I am using the power from 12V dry battery. tongue.gif

My laptop is now cooler than before. biggrin.gif

Easiest way to connect the adaptor to a fan. Cut off the adaptor's head(the round one). Strip off the wire exposing it with a positive and negative wire. Strip off the wires of the fan. Connect the adaptor's wires and the fan's wire. Use adhesive tape or solder to create a relaible joint. Done! Don't worry much. It's just 12VDC anyway. Not enough to kill a rat. laugh.gif

Can, but the speed of the fan is not as fast as 12V. make sure you connect the correct side of the positive and the negative. If not, your fan will not spin (but it will not spoil the fan)

Hi all, this is my DIY laptop cooler. Made using ring file and some masking tape.

3 quater view:

Left profile:

Right profile:

Cooler in action (left):
Attached Image

Cooler in action (right):
Attached Image

How it works:
The fan sucks in cool air from outside. The two cutouts on the cooler pad direct cool air from the fan to the base of the laptop where the cutouts are ideally located just below the CPU and GPU. Cool air takes the heat away from the base as it expel from the laptop. The cooler pad can be custom make to suit the design of your laptop.

The best thing is the cutouts can be custom make to suit the design of your laptop so that they are located directly below the CPU/GPU/HDD.

Unlike conventional laptop cooler, the fan does not suck in dust from your desk as it faces upwards. Even if it does, the placement of the fan means any particles being sucked into the cooler pad would settle on the inside of the cooler instead of the base of your laptop.

Lets check out the performance:
Test is conducted using a Compaq Presario B3800 Centrino P-M 1.6Ghz.
Idle without cooler:
Attached Image

Idle with cooler fan off:
Attached Image

Idle with cooler fan on:
Attached Image

Load without cooler:
Attached Image

Load with cooler fan off:
Attached Image

Load with cooler fan on:
Attached Image

Result:
The cooler brings the idle temperature down as much as 12C! blink.gif
Prime95 was used to test load temperatures. As you can see, the laptop is 20C cooler when the cooler is used!! thumbup.gif

Cost:
Ring file RM2
80mm fan RM3
Masking tape RM1
Total: RM 6 only!! biggrin.gif

@nerd nation
judging by the molex on the fan...it seems like ur running ur fan off a PSU... which would make it run at 12v (usually)

but if u connect the fan to the USB port itll be running on only 5v.. have u tried running the fan at 5v? if not.. y not give it a try...kinda curious on how much improvement ull get with 5V

also curious to know the difference in temps between the fan blowing in cool air (which is the current position) and sucking out hot air (the fan reversed). curious to know these 2 setups with 12v and 5v

I run the fan off an external HDD power adapter. Yes its 12V. I've tried modding the fan to run off usb at 5v. The result is very disappointing. The fan spins so slow and barely moves adequate air to cool the laptop down.

Regarding the fan orientation, I've tried using the fan to suck air out of the cooler. Compared to blowing the performance is much poorer, which is why i chose to have the fan in blowing position.

nice work nerd nation, the fan is designed outside to let the laptop has better position thumbup.gif on the other hand it looks dangerous if there are kids at ur home tongue.gif

and yeah u can try to use the multi volt adapter, if u wan to use usb and maintain similar fan performance, u hv to change to more powerful fan, when runs at 5v, it'll be just right for ur taste

3) Every fan can get 5V if you build parallel circuits. But current will be divided and probably you can only power up 3 fans, depending on their power consumption.

The speed of the fan will proportionally decrease as the number of fans increase, even all fan get 5V. Hmm... generally, 12V fan is stronger.

I'll leave question 1 and 2 for experienced forumers.

glass?? That would be abit hard to make a hole on a glass but nice try!!!My opinion is using wat kind of frame/base for the fans is not very important and it can only help to lower down 1 or 2 celsius and sometimes no effect at all.The key is the position of the fans or the air flow is pointing to the heat source. Eventhough, fan's speed is low,the fan position is towards to heat source u can still lower the temp.Just my 2 cents.

If you buy Acer laptop, it will sure overheat. They fans will go spinning like crazy with noise. And if you check it, acer laptop have only temp sensor for hard disk. Don't have sensor for CPU temp. Acer HDD temp already high (55 C) compare with other brands (42 C) so what do you expect from its CPU temp? Sure damn high until wanna overheat n burst. So stay away from Acer for a peace of mind.

I use the Cooler Master Notepal aluminium cooler and it really works to bring down 5 C on my lappie.

I think the new generation of Acer laptop got CPU sensor ald! My friend's acer laptop(14.1'' core duo, x1600,aluminium or magnesium lid) not sure wat model. The CPU temp and the HD temp can be seen in N.H.C.However, you are right the HD temp is 55c and the cpu temp is 60c idle %%^*($$. Therefore he try to use cooling pad to cool down. Now the CPU is 55c the HD temp is pretty well 40+c only. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif Pic is in the spoiler.

Agree! let me start 1st

Compaq V3164au(amd)

With Cooler Without Cooler
CPU temp : 41C 45C
HD temp : 45C 47C
Room temp around 30C

Discussion : The HD temp is only reduce in a very small amount. The reason
is the fan position is not right to the HD region.

conclusion: I will try to make a better one . biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Nid glasswork to help mi complete this project ^^ hope i will join u guys n let u c my works. if its success!! tongue.gif Temp will make some cheap n low costing pad for my lappy since its 24hours working. Not a wise idea to use like that without pad. Somemore celeron M processor imagine how hot is that >.<

Why use glass? Break how?

Celeron M where got hot... lower power consumption than turions and T5XXX/T7XXX leh.

Eh.... no more DIY cooler performance measurements anymore?

Means the table have to cut a hole to fit in that stuff then i guess should b fine bah tongue.gif

well i guess the diy project which have done by the forumer here. effectively cooldown lappy. yet i built one with mobo box for testing purpose n got one from supplier which is running 3 fan aluminion pad. found that my own design is better cooling than the manufacturer. but looks sucky lol

i dun think that can really perform cool down for lappy. cos therytically that thing only help sucking off ur processor heat. doesnt healp much. dun think that cooler will perform better than DIY concept cooling pad.

In theory it should work lor... cos memang internal airflow from intake to vents are designed from the start and these are tweaked with different fan speeds cos mat salleh always complaint noisy mar.

So in essense, that aerocool thing is like turbo charging the fan lor.

Theory only lar...

Yeah bro agree, we can't expect it can do more. It is only design for sucking cpu heat mah.Somemore, i like the feature of redirect the air flow. Some laptop's vent design is (shake head lah) right towards our right hand.(apa lah) So this little thigy can safe over hand not being heated (BBQ haha).

Just bought this stand.... it's not DIY but just share share niah. It does nuts to the temps but better for ergonomics...easier to type.

And it rotates 360 degrees tongue.gif

The cons is that it's plasticky.

i noticed abt ur DIY cooler, but then, is ur cooler stable to put a laptop on since u're using a plastic file(light and hallow).besides tht,i've another option on cutting a whole on the file using a razor and the side holes u made at the file.i suggest tht u can use a soldering gun instead(remember those days in secondary school?,alat pateri)when u poke hole already den must clean wif soldering flux.easily obtainable at pudu market.no need use so much energy to cut hole and scared later the knife breaks and fly to ur face if use too much energy

Not as dangerous.... Trying to minimize my cost and I'm doing that far from my workshop at home. If I'm home, I have a better tools. thanks anyway..

Still got problem, the fan is too close with the table, causing bad air flow, need to raise the cooler a little to give better air flow.. will find solution later on.. smile.gif

just want to share a stupid story here.

my fren is using a table fan to blow and cool the lappy + him + external hdd together at one shot..
and overall is all 3 'items' (including him) are very cool, and when i touched the lappy and external hdd, it doesnt feel hot at all..

so isnt that what we call efficient and effective? icon_idea.gif tongue.gif

It's sure hell's isn't efficient. That blower's really blowin a serious amount of air underneath that thing and the temp reduction not that much also.

Besides...it's mainly cooling plastic.

The heat of plastic is transfered from HD mah you cool the plastic = cool the HD.I wonder if i can cool the HD directly will be wonderfull (no need through the middle man= plastic) smile.gif smile.gif.

In the next display of nbtd retarded-ness.... me gonna test the "turbo charge the exhaust" fan style of lappy cooling.

The ingredient:

Build a cardboard box... and double tape in the blower

user posted image

Assembled. See that small hole? that goes to the exhaust fan

user posted image

Double taped to the exhaust duct... after taking this pic... ALOT more tape are added to ensure efficiency

Now just gotta wait a few minutes for the result

It's just a 5V blower I had lying around. I think it's from an old P4 notebook or something.

Basically these days, notebook coolers have 3 types right?

- Standard passive stand
- Stand with fans
- That aerocool thing that clips to exhaust that some says works and some say is a waste of money.

Just testing which 3 method is more geng... not for permanent use wan. Maybe will come out with something later to use with 24/7 downloading. Something to cool down everything inside including the HDD.

For my lappy at least.. I think the "turbo exhaust" method is more interesting for me especially when during high load operation like gaming.

Don't really have a HDD temp problem to begin (even after days of downloading) so the blow bottom thing is not useful for me.

Never know but, if we expose to overheat it might produce yellowish stain. I have done modding a cheap metal cooling pad tongue.gif planned to make a arcylic type cooling next month biggrin.gif

Well, C2D shouldn't be that hot.. it seems that your heatsink & processor contact is not so good. Something wrong wif it. Can try to remove the heatsink, clean the exisiting paste N apply new one.. I think that should help...

guys, i'm planning to do my own cooler pad but i'm wondering, if i buy the vizo 80mm fan with speed of 5800rpm, is a 12v adapter enough for me to get the maximum speed?and btw, i know there's a few compaq v3000 user here complaining bout the heat..i have an idea actually..if you guys notice the hole for the gc fans(at the top left bottom of your laptop), its only open for 1/4..if you guys can poke the rest of the holes(meaning full circle),it can suck in more air into the GC..logically it will la but i havent done it cause i dont have the right tools to do it..maybe some of you can try..cheers..

Well.I'm too lazy to mod another casing with small pretty fans considering the fact i have one laptop cooler already. So I just bought one 240V AC fan and blow my laptop.Manage to cool the hard drive from operating temp of 47 C to 38 C. O yea.My fan is damn noisy though.

Alternatively... if really nbtd.. can get one of those IDE/SATA to USB cables that comes bundled with an AC adaptor for 3.5" HDD.
These adaptor's comes with regular molex and sata power connectors.. provides 2A of 12V power rclxms.gif

Yes.. not recommended to run fans above their specified voltage. DC fans are not very overclockable.

Hello people..

i hope u guys can help me here...

im using asus intel core 2 duo 2.0 with 1 gig ram.. running on Win Xp..

i install nhc(notebook hardware control) software which helps to read my laptop temp.. and it compatible with the ati radeon built in graphic cards..

im using a 3 fan cooling pad.. which i bought for rm40..

my laptop temp is around 50-55 degrees.. is this normal for a core 2 duo processor? when i use the cooling pad, there's no significant differences on the temp.. plus when im playing a game.. the temp will shoot up to 75-80 degrees..

how do i decrease the temp??

Basically it's like this..

Unlike desktop PC, 50C is your laptop's manufacturer's designed temps. Due to the small space for cooling and noise concerns, the fan will only spins once it reaches a certain temp (in most cases this is 46C to 50C) hence you'll likely to see 50C most of the time.

As for the notebook cooler, it's usefulness really depend on how your lappy's bottom case look like.

There's a thread somewhere where this is discussed.

says fan A, B, C.
A & B each have 1 molex connector, while C have 2 molex connector.
i connect A, B, C together by molex connector, then AC-DC adapter to C's 2nd molex connector.

The connecter is:

which has four wires connected to it:

My question is can this fan be modded to become a DIY notebook cooler? If yes, please let me know how I can connect it to the power adapter... Thank you!

hi,

i think it can be moded hmm.gif ,
but i dunno which wire for your four wire to be connected to the adapter,(maybe red,and black only needed) sweat.gif
i give example of mine,
for my fans,i got 2 wire, which is red and black,
i cut both wire from the molex connector, and also the 12v power adapter,
i just connected the red wire from fans to the black white stripe wire from the power adapter,
and the black wire from the fans connected to the black wire from the adapter,
and just on it,
all working fine,
make sure there is no contact between black and red wire which are already connected to the adapter wire,
it will coz the fans not function,
just seperate it smile.gif

p/s :this is just axample from my fans, any modification is your own risk sweat.gif

Hahahah.... niah = sound = syiok = no meaning
*
Just for information, 'niah' has got meaning: It's a Hokkien word and it can be used to substitute Manglish 'only'.

For example, if you're gonna say "Not expensive-lah, five Ringgit only..."
it can be translated to "Not expensive-lah, five Ringgit niah..."

Hey there MildLO, thank you so much for the pictures!

I have tried to wire my fan to the adapter according to your method - red to black white, black to black - but the fan won't spin. Now I'm wondering whether the current is not enough - the adapter is giving out 500mA, whereas the fan needs 1.40A?

hey guys, great thread rclxms.gif
thinking of doing a diy laptop for my benq s73g, which is bloody hot lol
but i'm thinking of only powering it using usb, for portability.

my plans so far is to use a cardboard ring binder (probably will find someway to strengthen it a bit tongue.gif) and 2 fans

since i'll be using usb to power it, and according to this thread, will only get around 5v, do you guys have any fans to recommend? (actually i know squat about fans since i've never built my own rig)

any help would be appreciated notworthy.gif

I think the best practice would be to suck it out, rather than blowing it in.

As for two fans with one USB connection, I think it's possible considering that most (if not all) commercial laptop coolers have more than one fans but only one USB head, isn't it?

ya,i have try it out using usb with 2 fans,
but not enough power to keep the fans running at full speed as the usb power only deliver 5v only,
better use the adapter for the fans to fully performs smile.gif

No point using an adaptor right... so bulky. Most 12V fan will run 5V as well... just slower. Just get one that runs fast to begin with lor... and remember.. USB port max is 0.5A. Don't exceed that.

reviving an old thread.. hehe..

story about my cooler.. after finished my uni life, go back home and decide to make a proper plexiglass housing for it.. following the same format as the blue plastic file.

Went to some shop and ask them to cut it down to size. Assemble everything...

put the laptop on it and use it for like a few weeks then the damn laptop Mobo died on me... l

moral of the story: never use a cheap laptop to play game, no matter how good your DIY cooler is.. haha..

Hi guys,

i am working as an engineer, and i happen to have some scrap material to use for my coolerpad, it's a 3mm SUS304 (stainless steel) Board with lots of holes across the whole board, about 6mm..

i know that have air circulation below the laptop will improve the temp by a lot, but this is normally because other coolerpads are make of plastic, conduction with the metal should help to remove the heat faster, ZALMAN NC1000 is make of alu, and i believe that its not in contact with the laptop, there's a small gap inbetween them..

now i was thinking since i am using stainless steel, (conductivity higher then alu) would it be alot better if i make my coolerpad so that it will be in contact with my laptop?

i will be making the coolerpad when i get my laptop in end may, or maybe i might just start to make it first, my laptop is F8Is from ASUS...

will be showing you all pictures when it's done.. i should be installing 4 low noise fans..

thats sound like a good idea... pic spam once you done..

You need to find a way to mould/fabricate the sheet metal to that it touch the part where your laptop is the hottest use a heat transfer material maybe????. But make sure the sheet metal doesnt block your laptop air vents.

One of my coursemate fabricate a laptop cooler from sheet aluminum.. and it done a great job reducing the temperature and mine was made from aclyric with a huge fan...

*
hmmm ok i guess i will find out the location of the CPU and the HDD, then i will cut out some heat radiation pads that i have, to stick it there, for the rest of the location i will depend on my air circulation from the holes, the radiation pads are quite expensive tho

some works better when the air flow goes down
some works better when the air flow goes up
there was a review of a laptop cooling pad..it was made in a way that it can be placed either way..surprisingly..the guy that did the review..tested both ways which is what i've said..
if i'm not wrong, his vaio's temp was better when the cooling pad sucks the air whereas his dell's temp was better when the cooling pad blows the air
well, just perform some tryouts on ur laptop to know whether the temp is lower when the air flow of the cooling pad blows the laptop or sucks the air..
haha, maybe get 4 fans..2 for blowing, 2 for sucking or 2 big fans..1 for blowing, 1 for sucking =D

i use CM notepal all aluminum for my cq40-133ax (damn hot this lappie!!)..i can only play GRID for max 1.5hr then this this lappie will hang..HDD became very hot n same with the vent hole. eventhough notepal has 2 fans but it's located at da wrong site, so i guess i need a DIY cooler (can't buy table fan due to my Uni hostel rule)..my plan r:
1. use someone idea of using plastic file
2. place 2 high speed thermaltake fan (planning to run it full speed)
3. using 12V
4. place cheap 4 USB port

yesterday just made one DIY notebook cooler... rclxms.gif .. take me about 2 hour to find the part around my home and shop and only with RM16 ..

12v PC fan =RM12
Tape = RM1
Connector= rm1
switches= RM2

Other is free....can find old junk part .

USB wires
hard cardboard file

I design one that direct the fan to my CPU and RAM HOLES....

By the way i using AMD.2.1GHz so the temp is about 70'C normal but when it run with games the temp will go up till 90'c like that..sometime even 100'c before shutdown.. icon_question.gif

Made my design simple just directing it ..beside i have to cut some more holes on my lappie bottom casing to let more flow going through it...opps..No waranty lorrrr.... whistling.gif

Here some of the picture of my version...

Attached Image

Attached Image

Attached Image

here my cooling result

before

Attached Image

after

Attached Image

before cooling the cpu temp is 75'c and after switching on the cooling, it down to 64'c...the hard drive stay the same 41'c..

SO ..11'C drop in aircond room. but if in normal room the temp will drop about 7'c....wow. rclxm9.gif no need to buy at shop liao.... tongue.gif

Do u have a 12v adapter? if use USB wire.. the wind speed wont be so strong and sometime wont turn abit....
but u can still use it if ur comp USB voltage is around 5v ...

use the black and red wires from the USB.. or some type of USB wire are different in color. so use the white for + and blue for -- smile.gif Attached Image

Material Used & Cost:
2x 12cm fan - RM13 each
arcylic casing - RM20
red color rubber tube - RM4
adapter - RM10
TOTAL - RM60

Performance
Learned from mistake which cooling is not neccessary for every bottom part. use 12cm fan to draw larger heat area while achieving same performance and less noise. 100% cooling effective compare to the cooler outside, the fan position is just under the heat area, all are cooled very well n very silent, cons is it's still bulky but less weight

Mind i ask where u get the arcylic casing ?

it depend on your number of fan... if your cooler only have 1 fan the better use 9v output ..but u still can use 12v..just the lifetime of fan will be effected. Use a adjustable adapter..range from 3v to 12 volt. so u can adjust to suite your need..like when playing game , u can set to 12 v and normal usage set to 9 volt

Thanx for the reply bro. Btw, my cooler has 2 fans. And the adapter i have is rated at 230V. Is it ok to use that ? Coz normally i see people use 240 V.
Will there be any effect ?
Thanx in advance

it ok if the volt is round 220v to 240 volt because our home electricity is not always at 240v.. since your cooler have 2 fan then u can continue using 12 volts.. sure boots your fan speed alot..and cool your cpu down.. rclxms.gif

the size of the cooler dont allow bigger fan to be install inside it.. because of the thickness of it.. but since u saying that u only wan use usb as the power. then i could recommend u to find any of usb wire from mouse or from other junk.. wire it together with the existing wire of the cooler.. be careful with the wire color and positive negative....look up at my post above..for refer..

Hi guys, 1st of all, I didn't take the time to read up all the pages. I'm not sure if what I'm spamming have already been said by other user...so here goes my 2 cent on the subject

Most if not all of the cheap external fan you buy would not lower the temperature of your notebook.

If you want to DIY a cooler, you need to know the most important part....which is to find the air intake of your notebook. There is no point blowing air to the bottom of your notebook. It is not located at the bottom of your notebook all the time. Certain model like Dell have their ait intake on the side of the notebook. Direct your fan to blow into the air intake and see the difference flex.gif

Simply buying a notebook cooler and blowing to the back of your notebook is like installing an extra fan in your PC blowing to the bottom part of your PC MB. That alone would not reduce the temperature of your PC by much. But if you blow it directly to your GC, that would make a different as it is where the most heat is generated (next to processor)

Another thing that you need to note is to make sure there is a gap between the fan and your table. Leave no gap and no air would come from the fan. I found some of the notebook cooler is not elevated enough to even blow air

One of the worst thing a notebook owner does to their notebook is to use it on top of non-flat surface, eg: sofa, bed, on top of your cloth etc.

If your keypad is hot when you touch it, it is time to shutdown. Warm is still ok, but not for long term

If you don't have notebook cooler, at least elevate your notebook. That alone would reduce the temperature by a few degree C.

Blowing air directly into the air intake > using notebook in aircon room nod.gif

The yellow one is rpm sensor wire and to control it speed...the 3 wire fan is use for cpu cooler that plug in motherboard....so dont care about that yellow wire, if the fan can run with 2 wire...

on my opinion...the diy cooler...is depend on what material and those thing u used to made it...cant really say it will be more effective...
CM...i have no idea on that since i dint use any model of CM yet...
*
yes i agree for above statement...it would be more effective if the cooler layout(fan) is blowing on the right location such as the rocesor intake...to maximize the laptop cooling you have to set the cooler layout according to your laptop layout... rclxub.gif

better handle with care when playing with 12v...
add resistors and fuses for safety just incase..if ur fan boom..then bye bye le..
just need to know the wiring and so on to enable usb and plug compliant~

because u might end up with

if i'm not wrong, the voltage doesn't do much
only the amperage is the one that increases the speed of a fan

say. i want to make 2 source of power.
USB and Adapter.

If I use 12V fan but using on USB. What will happen?

And what are the best way to cool it?
I see 3rd party cooler mostly draw hot air out.
Should I follow this method?

yep..just like wat i did..im using power adaptor so i can freely choose which voltage want to use..more voltage = more rpm = more noise = more karen.. biggrin.gif

will the fan damage if overvoltage?..for me, it's not..yet..but, im sure the lifespan of the fan will decrease a lot if not using designed voltage.. rolleyes.gif

just wanna ask... if i use a 12v fan and plug it in to the laptop's usb port, will it cause any problem (ignoring the 3rd wire-yellow)? if possible, then can i wire two 12v fans together and use the same usb port?

i know the recommended one would be powering the fans directly via power adapter rather than usb. can someone explain how to do it with a speed controller and the whole wiring thing?

the fans will only be receiving 5v as thats the USBs power. and will run slower than it would at 12v

yes u can wire 2 12v fans and use the same USB port....BUT depends on the amperage of the fans...the USB ports dont really have much amperage.

You should get the exhaust cooler types, the ones you cling on to the (usually the side or back) of the laptop where the fan blows the hot air out.
It may be real dusty inside.

both can.. but i prefer tilt design.. before u built the pad, make sure u already study the air flow of your laptop's cooler.. different laptop have different design of air flow.. some got exhaust at side, some on the back.. most important things is the air flow design, not how strong the fan blow air.. if your air flow design cun, then ordinary 12V fan is enough..huhu..

Now thinking of modifying my current cooler .....

Cooler Master X1 base
Fan Long Life Cooler Master Fan 2000 rpm at 12V [Blue]

This gonna be EXP to modify the current setup XD
I wan to ask Is it better to blow the air to the base or suck the air out ....
Since the X1 factory design are supposed to blow the air upward .......

Too true XD

Last month the fan was positioned to blow upward .... 2000rpm everyday
1 week the pad already showing visible bunny dust >.< scared all my laptop hole will be filled with dust.

Now it is positioned to suck the air downward at 2000rpm ...... the tradeoff is very obvious my keypad seem warm at 45-50 C last time it was cool enough ....... add more fan or increase the blow out hole for the fan

i don't think it is economic to diy notebook cooler anymore, the total cost after u buy all the fans and accessories + diy works sure higher than buying existing one, since nowadays those coolers sell so cheap at it shop.

I heard it's pretty dangerous...

Full fan speed which supports 12v while the usb is only 5v , scare overloaded

QUOTE
the problem would be that most fans are 12 volt, usb is 5 volt.
you would need a fan that was designed for that usb power.
also the 5 volt usb supply is a limited curent supply and can easly be overloaded.

and i bought 3...
their demissons are 120mm x 120mm x 25mm
i install them under the CM notepal u3 and the airflow is ***king imba
bottom was no enough air to suck and cant get full air flow cus the holes blocked the air flow cus the air flow too large...

damn crazy... u might dun belive the air will reflect from the laptop bottom case and return to the fan...
so it ***king noisy...

I've wired up 3x 120mm fans to adapter...
I have CM Notepal U3 and 3x 120mm fans...
any suguessions for me to get nice air flow and good perfomance?

I tried to do the case with box but the fan is ***king heavy...

its annoying i really don't know i am happy or angry...lmao

Added on May 14, 2011, 3:46 pmI strongly recommend to clean your laptop's heat sink before you get a cooler... Also change its Thermal Paste to Arctic Silver 5 ,Tuniq TX4, Arctic MX-4 etc.
Works great for me, btw i don't need a laptop cooler anymore for now, thats a gift for my sister's birthday...

hi all, i'm new here
i own a cm U3 cooler
i buy 2x 120x120x25mm 90cfm cm fan to add on to the u3 cooler
so now in total the u3 have 5 fans.
the power supply, i use PSU
but never try use software to check how much it brought down the temperature of my laptop.
one bad things about the modification is that, the new fan it just reflect back once it hit on the laptop. so it become like blowing backward -,-
anyone have any idea to improve that?
i also thinking to mod my u3 by using water cooling lolz.

Actually I mode the wire into molex connectors , one wire must be positive and 1 more must be negative .

CM 90cfm is not too good to use for cooler pad .. 3 died on me oledy .... IMO noticed after 3 died ~_~ ..since the cm use sleeve bearing ..and we mounted the fan at an angled position ..the bearing just cannot tahan ... 3 of my fan all die by the same way ..fan stuck ..so I suspect the bearing

and it a waste really getting an led fan for a cooler pad ...once u put the laptop onto it ..nothing comes out tongue.gif ..I'm talking based on my experience ....better buy some led and DIY hahahaha

plus once u installed a high flow fan ..make sure u have some 10mm clearance between ur pad and ur laptop if not the fan would be struggling to push the air out ...or if it sucking in make sure the backside have some clearance also ~ adding some pad would help alot

LOL now I really buthurt hahaha

I'm selling those also ...quite fast move a lot of air way better than any fan ONLY If you can handle the 35~40db noise. Thus getting a rheostat is HIGHLY recommended if you cant handle noise

U can see the internal picture here http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2208955
using ball bearing sleeving ..got 2 inside of it

For those led U might wanna DIY some 4X50sen led with 1 resistor for 3ringgit max cost lol

Should you throw out every single fan that uses sleeve bearings? No. Should you never ever buy a heatsink with sleeve bearings? That's up to you. With proper lubrication sleeve bearings will provide performance and service on par with that of their ball bearing counterparts. If left alone for a long time, and run at higher temperatures they will fail before the ball bearings will. With some fans using both bearing systems the lines become blurred...

For things like powersupplies it makes much more sense to only use ball bearing based fans. For CPU coolers that are on for extended periods of the time the same goes. For the average home PC which is on intermittently, sleeve bearings are a fine choice. For overclockers running Peltiers, ball bearings should be the only kind of fan considered. That said the decision truely depends upon the circumstances, and the quality of the fan being considered.

For my sleeve bearing fans I think I'll go put a small dab of grease under that sticker just to be on the safe side ;-)

SOS

Ball Bearing more good~ ...in my case the fan is ON 24/7 ...I usually dun turn my laptop off

Well,i have a few question i want to ask about making a DIY cooler pad for laptop..So first question is, if the fan is rated DC12V and 0.2A,i make it to a usb powered fan(by cutting the wire and connect red to red and black to black by soldering it),can it work in its full potential (like its max RPM)?Second question, does the diameter of the fan effect the fan speed?Last question, where can i actually get this acrylic?Stationary shop?Pardon me..its kinda long..first time making a fan myself.. icon_question.gif sweat.gif
