Good evening from Istanbul. It's 5:50pm here.

Stuck here for 3 nights, it's summer here and freaking 33-35 degrees HOT with dry heat. Not gonna do any sightseeing in this stupid weather, so I've prepped this in the hotel room for the entire duration of the stay.

Retina MacBook Pro, running Diablo 3, StarCraft 2 and Steam games. The silver behemoth is the 6TB Thunderbolt Duo drive feeding 6TB worth of 720p/1080p movies and TV shows via Plex, Retina iPad, Retina iPhone 4S (used to take this pic, which makes me Retinized across all my portable devices), and PSVita.

No moments of boredom here. The only boring time is the time to venture out of the room to get something to eat. Turkish food isn't exactly "delightful".

Err, is this thing a must?
I been using MBP for 2 years.
So far, no scratch or discoloration on the palm rest.

Just wonder. hmm.gif

it's not a must, more so a preference.

can't call out on others for wrapping up their MacBooks beyond recognition if they so wish. (see what I did there?)

in other words this will not turn into a how to use your Mac crucifixion. I'm nipping this one in the bud!

nip nip nip nip nip!

No, what I meant is that, is there something that you worried and caused the application of the palm rest?

One of my friend did applied the palm rest guard, he always wear metalic watch to use his laptop.

That's why I'm asking, is there anything you are worrying about?

From my understanding, MBP unibody casing was anodized so that it is more scratch resistant and corrosion resistant. The layer of aluminum oxide that forms during anodizing is extremely resistant to scratch. Our sweat is quite corrosive sometime. We sweat when the MBP heats up, so it has to protect against our corrosive sweat as well.

I have faith in the technology Apple implemented. I tested my previous MBP without speck cover for a few months, no scratch nor anything. I used to bring it out everyday with me when I'm out in the field. Just some dirt which you can wipe off easily with a damp cloth.

Guess I should add "Personally I feel this way" to prevent that someone thinks I'm out in the wild biting people again. laugh.gif

No offense though, I felt it is like a gimmick. notworthy.gif

Only my iPad is covered with thin casing, due to the fact that the apple logo behind the iPad scratches easily. It is plastic or some sort of material.

Feel proud of the technology behind unibody MBP.

How anodizing works

Personally (and I can't emphasize more on that word: PERSONALLY), I find these skin wraps degrades from the look of the Macs. Sure, it protects, but Apple uses the aluminum body chassis as a giant heat sink to conduct the heat away. Wrapping it in plastic negates that heat dispersion.

The most I would do on my Retina MBP would be a palm guard. Just because I wear the Nike Fuelband and Lunatik Lynk on my two arms and I don't like the idea of scratching the palm rest area while I'm typing.

But hey, everybody got their own idea on what they wanna do with their Macs, I'm gonna follow Olivur's wisdom and opt-out.

i'll bite.

while being a technological feat and a sound choice (i say that because powdercoating would protect better against scratches but then would nullify the whole body as heatsink idea), the anodized unibody shell does scratch. be it by a usb flash drive you accidentally sent flying, a zippo lighter while trying to replicate a youtube lighter trick even though you don't smoke or from accessories that you have adorning your wrists. but i take every scratch, blemish, graze or laceration on anything which i call mine as a personal mark.

and if you deem some sweat and dirt as "stress testing", I DIDN'T WASH MY HANDS BEFORE TYPING ON MY MBP AFTER PLAYING WITH THESE :p

If it is scratched, it is scratched.
Nothing much you can do.
Keep those keys or metal stuff away from your MBP.
Did you mixed with any hard stuff when you are carrying it around?

Might be helpful. Hope it helps.

I do, high end model with RAM upgrade to 16GB. Ordered at Mac Studio Lowyat on June 18th and they said I have to wait for 4 weeks.

This is an upgrade from my 5 years old MBP.

unlike painted and powdercoated surfaces the only way to mend a scratched anodized surface would be to re-anodize it. leave it as is and deal. trying to match a paint and free-hand patching it will only make things worse especially since the shell isn't of a darker shade on the colour spectrum.

That's why the first accessory that the people buy after getting their MBP is a protection. In my case, I quickly bought a leather sleeve to protect from scratches in my backpack.

So I'm super late to this, but I've been busy and before you know it, it takes 3-4 weeks for the MBP with RD to ship. (Funnily enough, I was actually in the States when the announcement happened, but seeing as it was during the day, I was out doing stuff. Then I decided I should just buy it when I get back to Malaysia in a month. And here I am.)

Anywho, the prolonged delay in my buying trigger finger allows me some reflecting time and I am now ready to make a move on on the MBP with RD. I know it's very user-serviceable unfriendly, and there are issues with Chrome. Aside from that, any other things I should know? Any kind souls with the MBPRD willing to do a quick summary? I tried reading the whole thread but had to stop at page 15 since I have to get back to work. TIA.
