Interesting read. But to be fair Samsung copies and enhances very well compared to those cheap China knock-offs.

I have more respect for Nokia in the hardware-design department, their polycarbonate (N9, Lumia 800) and aluminium (N8) phones are some of the best looking and feeling devices ever made.

But Nokia's weakness has always been lack of focus on software. Symbian has always had glaring bugs but WP7 was beta software.

I mean, I'm not sure about the copying part (particularly on iPhone). But then, if it's in terms of looks and design, I don't see any big deal, although it's not nice, but it happens. Just don't 100% completely copy.
I means, it's normal when people saw some design, they get a new idea "based" on that design, or there can be reference to many design. It's very subjective.
Have you design webpage? Even webpage, when webpage is still relatively new, those webpage LAYOUT design looks unique, but as web grows, the layout become common, and is it copy? And many layout design are actually based on another layout/ideas.
Long ago, web page are famous with frames, LEFT and RIGHT, then got TOP, LEFT and RIGHT; So, someone create new web page usually will follow the common ones. Later come out with using tables and eliminates frames, the design gone more flexible and creative, but just because there're similarities, it's not really copying.

Anyway, if DIRECT copying, then it's very obvious; I'm not sure if Samseng have any DIRECT-COPYING; Nowadays, there's too many design that is similar, or VERY similar, who copy who? Is it important until need to ban? I have no idea but I just think it's plain stewpid, sorry to say. It's not like some awesome technology.
Nokia first invented internal antenna phone in 3210, so should they ban everyone from using internal antenna? LoL, what will happen to other phones today with antenna on the outside, haha...
So who came up with first colour screen? Who come up with MP3/Wav ringtone, etc? LoL... Who copy who?
Sorry, but to me, that's just plain stewpid if it become so serious.

But talking about copying, look at Korean cars, hehehe. I think the looks is also copy here and copy there.

ya, you are right, samsung don't have any direct copying

but i do not think Apple is inventor of any thing, in fact i see them as the 'greatest thief' ever in the industry. there is another quote that Steve Jobs used (quoting Picasso) - "Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal". The difference between 'Copying' and 'Stealing' is that copying is lazy, blatant and obvious (eg samsung) whereas stealing require really hard work to create something unique, seamless, integrated and way way better than the original ideas (eg. from xerox to all the other bits and pieces of half-baked ideas). Recent good 'stealing' examples are like Windows Phone OS and Nokia N9 and Lumia design when comes to touchscreen design. Like they said - "Everything is a Remix"

to me personally, what samsung did was clearly dishonourable (the part on trade dress) but i do disagree 100% with Apple on riding on the law to enforce the pattern system to create maximum supernova on samsung. Other than industries like pharmaceutical, medical or agricultural, i strongly believe the whole software pattern system is broken and stupid, stifling innovation.

btw, i've been a web/application developer for more than a decade now smile.gif

The wireless charging sounds cool actually. The design of the phone is more colourful than Android phones and iPhones.

But nothing will overtake Android's market share if it doesn't have an open file system that developers and modders can use.

I don't know much about Apple history, but I can say that they are very good with "words", or in nice business term or word, "rebranding" and "marketing".
One famous example is: Face Time (Innovation? NEW?)
How they give "lame" excuse on the usage of "Flash" and "Stylus" is another case. The excuse is like treating their users as really, erm... let's just put it, the level which able to use their smartphone. If they don't give or unable to provide, then admit it loud and proud, and if they really want to change everything, then come up with the technology that can provide it and overcome the weakness.

As for Samseng, well, the design copying is not something new. There're too many smartphones today, don't you feel many phones actually looks almost similar, just maybe some "more round a bit", more "curve", etc. I don't see the point of fighting for design, eventually sure will have people copy or take up the idea (IF IT'S A GOOD ONE), but can't really blame Apple since don't have any more new idea to come up with NEW design and have been using the same design all the while.

In automotive industry, the design copying is much more obvious, just look at the recent Korean cars, really like copy here and there. But, that's not a big issue, the bigger issue is, usually a specific car brand have their "trademark" look or design.
e.g. Honda cars, without looking at the logo and just looking at certain part of the body (for from far away), you can tell what's the car brand because there's this "unique" characteristic in their looks (altough newer models seems to have lost the touches, maybe new generation designer or too modern design).

As for smartphones, iPhone characteristics I guess it's the ONE-BUTTON-TO-RULE-THEM-ALL Godly "Home" button? If talking about the phone shape, I think there's too many phone have such similar shape, and they have silver back. Does any other brand have similar LOOK such as silver back, the similar looking "HOME" button? So serious until if you put both the phone side by side covering the brand, you can hardly differentiate them?
Even the menu items design look "kind of" similar, but it is hard to differentiate and is it able to confused people that the SGS2 is an iPhone?
Moreover, with themes, many things can look similar in terms of UI, and some user actually wants it.

Doesn't matter, they're using 808 as marketing and built-up the PureView name, response, etc.
Now that it gets people attention, they can market their WP PureView easily because FIRST IMPRESSION is important, and Nokia already created an amazing FIRST IMPRESSION on the PureView technology with 808 PureView.
Now that's a smart marketing and decision, unlike the decision to choose WP as their core and ONLY OS.

Still, the charging is not unique for WP ONLY device. So, this is nothing special for WP8; Hope they don't market as if it's a special thing for Lumia only devices. It'll be like trying to fool people.

If it wants to compete with a smartphone, first WP needs to become a proper smartphone OS.

I remember how unique it is on Nokia N8 devices. USB OTG, superb 12mp wide lens with ND filters, sturdy anodized aluminium body and a simple AMOLED screen that would beat all of the Super AMOLED ASS phones

N8 remains in my heart (touching mode haha)
