Between now and sept(photokina) we will get to see a new generation of
high end compacts. Fast lens and I inch sensor will be expected or else
don't bother

LX7 is coming

In some daily activites, they do replace DSLR.

For example, I use my girlfriend's XZ-1 to snap the photos of cuisines. We enjoy hanging out with my Sony alpha left in my beg. My hands will be occupied when going out with her, helping her to carry shopping stuff.

Some of these high-end compact do better macro than normal kit. I only have a 16-105mm for my Sony's system, can't really do macro, while XZ-1 can focus as close as 1cm, which is quite useful. I don't have to keep changing lens to enjoy the large aperture with XZ-1. It's convenient, and nowadays small sensor can actually perform as close as (if not surpass) an aged APS-C sensor.

The examples that you guys gave is using the RX100 to replace the DSLR for your day to day shots. It will still never replace a DSLR/DSLT for serious stuff, e.g. weddings, events, sports. just my opinion

Of course, but the mirrorless are going to shorten the distance between compact and SLR

Actually the V1 is quite a sweet camera... shame about the menu though (totally dunno how to use).

it only works it bright day light. and you can't control when you wanna use it. the camera will decide for itself.

New sensor that's even smaller than the previous (dunno if its a backlit cmos though..doesn't say) but 24-90mm f1.4-2.3 lens

And they finally realized those fugly ah beng red fonts that Panasonic have a tendency to slap all over their products have to be removed. Though they still whack an equally senseless "nano crystal coating" on the camera's face (in less offensive white though)

Yup... that's why its curious to see if the new sensor is a backlit cmos or not. That could help pull-in the difference.

Currently the RX100 has at least one stop advantage over LX5/XZ1.

Also downloaded the large jpeg samples for the LX7.... doesn't look good

correct me if i am a wrong but a backlit sensor will only give you better performance at high ISO performance. color seperation, dynamic range and the amount of details you can get doesnt get improved. rx100 still wins

Ya.. Dynamic range sorely lacking on the previous lx/xz sensor but thats not fully size dependant. Like S100's DR quite good wat... Despite its small size

anyway this time they really put out a great lens.... 1.4-2.5 that is sure fast.

It's a balance la... between lens and sensor.
