The allure of sitting comfortably in an office without having to be on-call every alternate night is tempting, especially when you plan to start a family. You're right, there is no grandeur or glam, listening to patients complaining all day long sad.gif but for some being a doctor is more than a job, it is a vocation.

There's much more towards life than $$$, glamour, and expensive items, but then again that's my point of view. Med is worth it for me. For those who are doing med for the Mulla, you are barking up the wrong tree hey. Stay away, be warned!

And we do not wear white coats here in Aussie tongue.gif used to, but not anymore. think it's due to transmissible diseases policy, something like no long sleeves in NPICU here.

Bare beyond elbow has always been the policy in government hospital. All the expensive watches, religion accessories will have to go once you start seeing patient.

You'll want a smart phone once you start housemanship. Oxford handbook doesnt cut it anymore, but sarawak handbook, paeds protocol and Frank Shann chart are very useful survivor tools.

If you can afford uptodate or other EBM apps, thats even better. I was forced to buy a smartphone as I was frequently outgunned by my peers. When specialist ask question, they expect fast answer,i.e: hide behind your friend and start googling.

Sarawak Handbook of Medical Emergencies. Edited by Dr. Soo et al.

As the name suggest, it is from Sarawak. All the contributors are from Sarawak General Hospital. It may not be up to date, but a good reading material.

There is plan to abolish the shift system, and revert back to on-call system. I personally think that this provide better mental training for us, although it means morning round one HO need to take care of 2-3 patients only.

in some hospitals, and in some posting/time of the year, there are not enough housemans to carry out the shift system properly....

the shift system is workable if there are enough people, and there is a good system for handover of patients....

the best is still the old on call system, as far as continuity of patient care, and houseman training is concerned.....

Short answer - you can, if you can get an internship spot.

The problem is not recognition, but lack of internship jobs......they have enough to take all residents and some internationals.....but about half of internationals will not find a match.....in most states, they have a prioritisation policy, so off shore graduates are always placed last.....

There is another alternative for onshore internationals, places in rural and private hospitals....but this is not open to monash sunway graduates.....
