Aussie system is different. The GPs here are all within RACGP and been through all the exams/training and specialised in general practice. after registering, they can open their own clinics as they want. I think in Malaysia, GPs are those who decided to come out of the hosp system and open their own clinics? (unless it is a specialist clinic) I don't really know Malaysian system that well.

you cannot just 'open clinic' in oz....all gps get reimbursement from medicare, and therefore, needs to register with medicare, under the health insurance act....and get a provider number....

in order to qualify, you need to have full registration with mba...

to qualify for full medicare reimbursement, you need to be a franzcgp....

they are still required to sit for isat (it is a requirement for amc recognition), but the result will have no bearing on the selection....

it is unmed that has given up ukcat.....since gmc has already ruled graduates cannot be placed in the uk fy programme, and hence cannot work in uk.....

Is it me, or is there a recent interest shift towards USMLE among local medical students now? Hope they research properly, and not depend on hearsay.

with the doors closing in the traditional commonwealth countries for msians, interest has shifted to the us...where the system for registration is still pretty open, ie pass usmle step 2 qualifies you to apply for intern jobs, and step 3 to apply for residency.....

however, like said, ability to register does NOT mean getting a job......and getting the necessary visa.....something many do not know details about...the intern and residency marching process is a complex one, and disadvantage imgs.....

I'm not entirely sure, but as far as I know, some of the international grads are going to practice within the state next year (launnie and burnie), which is good news!

hoping by the time I graduate I can find an internship spot too, but am not too worried about it at the moment really.

to be honest, I'm not sure what it is, so I am assuming that we don't have it. (unless someone can clarify for me)

I'm in the 10/14 batch, I was still doing med in UCSI in 09' =)

http://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/pub...cal-internships

at the moment, it is purely running for 2013 graduating students, for internship 2014....100 places...

it appears it may be a short term adhoc measure, till public hospital internship places catches with graduating numbers....the increase in graduating doctors is expected to taper off in 2016...

Thanks limeuu, seems like a fairly new thing. I'll ask around. Hoping they can rectify the problem, but it might take a while. And I think some residents weren't given spots for next year in the hospital I'm currently working in, due to lack of funds. It is pretty worrying really.

Hi guys, just a few questions for those who are attuned to the healthcare system in Malaysia. Does anyone know the state of psychiatry/mental health in Malaysia? I'm a Malaysian medical student in an Australian medical school with an interest in psychiatry.

I must admit that I'm not entirely keen on practicing medicine back home, but I would be slightly more receptive of the thought if there are signs that psychiatry will become more acceptable to the Malaysian population in the future.

Other side questions include:
i. What is the extent of psychiatric teaching in Malaysian medical schools? (eg how many weeks/rotations/etc?)
ii. How bad is the stigma in Malaysia? From my very limited exposure, it seems that Malaysians only see psychiatrists when things get REALLY bad or when they are forced to do so, either by law or coercion. I'm guessing it's mostly due to embarrassment or the impression that psychiatry is a 'lesser' branch of medicine, but correct me if I'm wrong.
iii. Do psychiatrists in Malaysia deal mostly with voluntary patients or involuntarily-admitted patients?

Thank you in advance.

stay here! tongue.gif I think the stigma will always be there. Even the chinese term for Schizo (which is pretty much the same words used for mental health illnesses) has such negative connotation. Unlike here in OZ, even if you have been diagnosed with schizo (maybe with BPD too), you still get a job and be able to function pretty normally in the society. And of course there are those group of people who thinks psychiatry shouldn't be a part of medicine. I think personally, even in western society, it is the field which is least respected, ie if we compare it with other specialty physicians and surgeons. I've heard a lot of nasty jokes humiliating psychiatrists. I really have no idea why.

We have yet to reach our target of !:400 ratio of doctors to population!

Reaching this target is easier due to private initiative whereas setting up more hospitals is a government initiative that requires huge capex and funding.

Do you think the top students still choose medicine as their top priority in the coming years? Your guess is as good as mine.
