Creating a Nature Aquarium (do note that there are many substrate brands in the market, you do not need to follow EXACTLY the steps given below)
1. Bottom layer
-> lava rocks / ADA 5elements (Bacter100, clear super, tourmaline BC, Penac W, Penac P)
user posted image

2. Substrate layer: Soil (eg: ADA aquasoil normal type, ADA aquasoil powder type, JBL base fert, etc)
user posted image

3. Layout: Rocks, Driftwoods
user posted image

4. Plants
user posted image

5. Livestock: Fishes/shrimps/snails (add after major water change 50-70% 1week after initial setup)

"Dry Start Method" or "Emersed Growth Method"
Different people may have different opinions on this, but in my opinion this is the easiest way to create a scape especially "Iwagumi" style aquascapes where the plants we use are just foreground plants. One of the biggest challenges when we create aquascapes with just one variety of foreground plants is the plant mass is less when the initial planting is done. Now when we use substrate like ADA Amazonia II which is rich in nutrients the plant volume is not enough to absorb all the excess nutrients that algae takes over and it becomes extremely difficult to maintain such tanks until the plants have established and grown fully. Now for people who don't want to go through this trouble of the initial phase but yet end up with a Iwagumi scape like the one below, this method is the perfect solution.
user posted image
During this phase you really don't need to do much maintenance on the tank. You don't need to have very high lights on the tank as well as there is no water column to penetrate. No CO2 injection required. All you need to do is keep your lights on for 8-10 Hrs a day, open the wrap once a week for 5 min so that fresh air gets in and seal it back up. The results after two and half months is below.
user posted image
Once the plants have filled in like shown above, it's time to fill the tank with water. Once the water is filled, CO2 injection is required and needs to be kept very high for 2 weeks close to 5 bubbles per second (bps). Afterward, bring it down to 3bps. Setup lights as per the plants requirements. (Cuba is not a very light demanding plant). Setup filter that you have decided on using. If you are using nutrient rich substrate like ADA Amazonia II, follow the below light and water change routine.

Week 1: 3 Hrs of Light , 50 % Water change once in 3 Days
Week 2: 5 Hrs of Light , 30 % Water change once in 3 Days
Week 3: 7 Hrs of Light , 30% Water change once a week
Week 4: 9 Hrs of Light , 30% Water change once a week

Your tank is completely cycled after this stage and if you follow the above routine you will have minimal algae issues except for some diatom algae during the first 2 weeks on the glass which is easily wiped off during your water changes.

NOTE: A correct combination of amount of Light , CO2 and nutrients is required to keep a planted tank free of algae bloom. In most cases it is excessive light that causes the problem. Keep your lighting moderate and you will have minimal algae issues.

Types of Filtration:
Mechanical Filtration: This type of filtration is used to remove suspended dirt, floating particles and debris from the water column. This type of filtration is achieved by foam, sponge, fiber mesh and similar fine meshed media. Below is an example of a Mechanical Filter Media from an Eheim Canister Filter.
user posted image

Biological Filtration: This is the main type of filtration that is required for any aquarium. This mainly consists of media like Ceramic Rings, Bio Balls, Lava Rocks, etc, essentially media which is highly porous which provides a large surface area. Lot of essential bacteria like nitrifying bacteria and microorganisms thrive and multiply in this type of media and the high surface area provided by this type of media directly results in the amount of bacteria that colonize in your filter. These bacteria are found in the tank and form a film over every surface inside the aquarium and are referred to as “Bio Film” but the quantity of this in the tank is not enough. Hence we use Biological Media in the filter to provide a good growing area for these bacteria. These bacteria convert harmful shrimp waste which is essentially ammonia into harmless nitrates which is readily absorbed by the plants as nutrients. Without the biological filtration in place the shrimp waste spoils the water quality and the flora and fauna suffer which also leads to death. This type of media should ideally form 80% of the entire media used in the filter.
user posted image

There are commercially available products that have dormant essential bacteria that become active when you add them to your tank. It usually comes in a powder form and can be used underneath the substrate, sprinkled inside your tank and on the biological filter media. This will jump start your Tank cycling process. This can also be used in case you end up wiping out the essential bacteria in your setup for any reason. Some examples of these products are ADA Bacter 100, ADA Bacter Ball, Mosura Bio Plus etc. There is also biological filtration media which come seeded with the essential bacteria like ADA Bio Rio which also reduces your tank cycling time and also has excellent surface area for your bacteria to colonize. To know if you’re nitrifying bacteria and other essential bacteria are doing well, you can use an ammonia/nitrite test kit. These should ideally be zero.Below is a picture of ceramic rings.

Chemical Filtration: This type of filter is used to remove harmful chemicals from the water in the tank. Activated Carbon is what is used to act as a chemical filter. The life of activated carbon is 7 – 14 days based on the quality. After which it needs to be replaced if required. External Canister Filters come with an Activated Carbon Pad as a part of the filter media. Once a tank is cycled, you really don’t need to have this media in your filter unless you suspect that there are some harmful chemicals in the water. It is good to keep this media handy with you, in case for any reason if some harmful chemicals do get introduced to your tank through the tap water or other sources you can use this media in your filter to nullify the effect of those chemicals on your shrimps. Below is a picture of Activated Carbon
user posted image

Common types of mechanical filter
External Canister Filters: These are the best type of filters for planted aquarium. They have a large media chamber which can be effectively used for housing a large amount of Biological Media. They sit outside the tank and hence make the tank look clutter free. Have a smooth and silent operation. Eheim Filters are one of the best External Canister Filters available in the market. Below is a picture of an Eheim Classic Canister Filter and the ideal way to layer media in the canister filter.
user posted imageuser posted image

Hang On Back Filter: Also called as HOB’s, these filters are hung on the edge of the glass, there is a pipe which goes into the aquarium and is used to siphon the water out into the main filtration chamber which sits outside the aquarium and flows back into the aquarium through an outlet. These come in various filter capacity referred to as LPH (Liters per Hour). These are ideal for small tanks. You can put some Biological Filtration Media in the chamber, but the space is very limited.
user posted image

Sponge Filter: This type of filter is the most commonly used filters, this filter is placed completely inside an Aquarium and is air driven by an aerator. The main component of these filters is a sponge which acts as a mechanical filter and this works well as a biological filter as well. These again come in various sizes and you should choose one based on your tank capacity.
user posted image

Under Gravel Filter: Also commonly known as UG Filter. This consists of a base plate with grooves, The substrate is covered over the base plate. There is a pipe which goes into the base plate and this is the one which is visible above the surface. This filter as the sponge filter is a air driven filter. The essential bacteria colonization happens in the base plate. Some professional breeders use this in conjunction with the External Canister Filter, where the pipe coming from the base plate is connected to the intake of the canister filter. When you are using UG Filter ensure that you use a substrate that does not easily break down, as this will get into the grooves of the base plate and eventually end up clogging it.

Cleaning Your Filter:
Yes, there is a right way to do this. Your filter is constantly removing debris and muck from your tank and all this is getting accumulated in the filtration media in your filter. This accumulation reduces the filters flow rate and hence its effectiveness. Ensure that you clean your filter media when you see your filter flow rate has reduced.

Take some water from the aquarium in a vessel or tub, rinse and squeeze the dirt out from the mechanical filter media in this tub. For the biological filter media like your ceramic rings, bio balls etc, what i usually do is put them in a wide mesh net bag so that they can be easily removed for filter maintenance. Just dip the bag with the filter media a couple of times in the tub to remove large pieces of dirt and debris. Do not give a thorough wash for this media, the concept is simple, if you give it a good wash you will end up wiping away the majority of your bacteria along with it and it takes time for the biological filter to establish again. Another thing that i do is always after a filter is cleaned, i put in some artificial bacteria like ADA Bacter 100 into the filter chamber itself in the cases of Canister and HOB, In cases of other filters i just put this into the tank itself to replenish lost bacteria.

Thanks to ShrimpNow !!!

I do, simple,
Shrimps tank -> test the plant for pesticide first (put in a pail, throw in some feeder shrimps, left it there for half-day/a day, if pesticide present and strong, feeder shrimp will died in <5min), if all shrimps died during the duration, consider using that plant only in fish only tank.

All tank -> check for snails and clean up a bit.

after i received them, i separated for each branch. wash it, put it in refrigerator for several hours up to 1 day. just to ensure no parasitic inhabitant such as hydra. after checked the entire leaf all clear from parasite, plant it. hydra is troublesome when it comes in your tank.

if you want to buy camera, try nikon P300, although it look kinda old school, worth it. my cousin use it and i am so jealous bcoz he can go anywhere with it and get nice picture with small package. buying camera is not a waste..when go jalan2 can bring along...take picture with family..that moment you capture which you cant recreate it back! thumbup.gif

My 105 x 40 x 40 tank finally came! Then I was looking at iwagumi style and the guide searched has the exact same measurement with mine..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY2tZavZ9AA

Thinking of trying out iwagumi style, believing that it is considered an "easy" style for beginners.

My 105 x 40 x 40 tank finally came! Then I was looking at iwagumi style and the guide searched has the exact same measurement with mine..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY2tZavZ9AA

Thinking of trying out iwagumi style, believing that it is considered an "easy" style for beginners.

shouldnt be a prob to take DW from sea side.
the same thing we have to do with a newly purchased DW.
boil and soak.. then rinse well and soak in over-dechlorinated water for a day, then let air dry.

Guys! Wanna ask, is zebra danio an easily frightened fish? Coz i bought 6 of them for my 1.5 feet tank, they are so easily startled when i come near to look at them and when the lights turns on via the timer. They even jumped out of the water. Not only that, they love to stir up the substrate and uproot my glosso! Do any of you danio owners experience this?

10am-11am can start netting already.
because maybe..maybe.. at 12pm, other type of fish start to come out to bask under the sunlight, while other fish will start to find shelter.

btw,
i got 2 young surviving SAE. im willing to trade with a grown/retired/big&aggresive SAE since the other 2 got eaten already. so far, sang gemok SAE still survives.. lol
very aggresive little fellow rclxms.gif

also i got a pair of matured croaking gouramis and few female juvenile ones. my father asked me to let them go since they are eating my RCS. my rcs population dramatically dwindled. If got something to trade like HC or other plants is ok.. or other shrimps laugh.gif

Okay, I have another question:

What pump head brand (for sump tank) is the most silent but also efficient in performance?

I'm looking to get one that's reasonably priced. No China brands, okay. So far, I have been told that Rio, Aquabee, Eden and Ehiem have silent motors, or near to silent.

Do give suggestions.

Thank you.

all shrimps is eating non stop by the way.
malayan shrimps is kinda interesting.
let me check if it cross breed with CRS and RCS or not.

Added on May 25, 2012, 10:52 amrefer to this http://www.planetinverts.com/malaya_shrimp.html
"The pH should be in the high alkaline range of 7.8-8.0. This information has been provided by other breeders who have kept this shrimp and have knowledge of its requirements. Good clean water is very important, as with all other shrimp in the hobby. Dirty water will certainly cause problems. "
it seems that this shrimps is not easy to keep too.

nope Malaysian shrimp is a species by it self no cross breed... smile.gif

they look very similar to YAMATO size and eating habits even larve but no need salt water like YAMATO the larve can breed in fresh water... we can go to river and look below river rock to find it... want to make a trip haha
*
according to the web, it seems malayan shrimps need at least 7.5-8.0ph.
Please prove i am wrong. hehehhe.
i will be very very grateful if you able to breed them. please sell me some ! rclxms.gif
normally we only found shrimps with BIG claws in streams.

anyone knows this shrimp habitat??
doubt that it can be found in palm oil plantation area
hmm.gif

all shrimps cannot live in plantation area. coz oil palm produce boron to the soil. the fert also contains lots of boron. so, they will die. that's why, there will be no single shrimp in palm oil.

hye im newbie here. may i ask. im on my way to go and buy soil at pudu. yesterday already bought a 7.3 gallon tank. how much soil do i need to buy? n what type? the kedai prefer me to buy 4 kg ada normal soil and 2 kg ada powder type. the more thicker the more better they said for the root. they said its gonna be easier to plant when the powder type had been layer above normal type. is it true? sorry for long question. hope sifuss can help icon_question.gif =P

for a starter, i dont think you need the powder type. normal soil is enough already.
how much u need??
measure your tank length x width x 2" (the most ideal thickness)..

Added on May 25, 2012, 2:32 pmbtw, most of the soil sold in LITER

substrate = soil, no??
for the soil, you need 6L. 2" thk of soil will help you when u planting.
much easier to cucuk the plant. if not, it will easily float next day.

mini puffer is badass. dont use it.
here is the meal list:
1. snail
2. shrimps leg
3. fish tail
4. other mini puffer lol.
assasin snails might help, but they are slow. i use 8 assasin snail to clean up my 3feet tank, not to mention i manually suck snails out every week.

RM15 for one whole bucket tat time tongue.gif

+1
is it chlorine?

Added on May 26, 2012, 11:36 amgot a question to the CO2 solenoid valve users.

does your unit feel hot after continuous usage maybe 5-6 hours?
can you still touch the metal part no problem? or cannot touch due to very hot?
does it hot until the co2 tank also feel warm (warm not very hot until burn hand type la..)

not that im trying to back-up EA MV, but i've been their customer for plants for quite sometime and so far i never had pesticide problems.

but on the other hand, yes... un-treated tap water isnt safe for shrimps (also even to some plants and fishes). avoid using direct or un-treated tap water for anything. there's a reason why people do fishless cycling, wash filter using tank water, some people keep aged water for WC, etc... we dont do ma fan things for nothing.

not that im trying to back-up EA MV, but i've been their customer for plants for quite sometime and so far i never had pesticide problems.

but on the other hand, yes... un-treated tap water isnt safe for shrimps (also even to some plants and fishes). avoid using direct or un-treated tap water for anything. there's a reason why people do fishless cycling, wash filter using tank water, some people keep aged water for WC, etc... we dont do ma fan things for nothing.
*
i and flipmode are both victim of MV East Aqua plant cos of pesticide, it is their supplier fault, for those who have shrimps,
do a test with feeder shrimp/glass shrimp with the new plant in a bucket with tank/treated water before introduce to your main tank.
This will minimize the risk of wiping your whole shrimp colonies.
Sang gemok, purigen won't remove pesticide but activated carbon do, i recommend flipmode purigen is to remove/clean up organic waste
generated from those dead shrimps corpse , previous decaying plant & uncontrolled feeding.

If you really want the plant in your shrimp tank ,then try put them in small tank with activated carbon to clean up the pesticide,
after a week test the plant with feeder shrimp or your low grade RCS again.

pesticide can be remove by using alkaline water (high pH water). soak 2-48hours. then run with normal tap water..test again before u use the plant..otherwise...use arrow advice..dump in active carbon in your filter and remove any invertebrate. maybe two week will become normal again..

stainless steel + the mesh is finer type... so tats why more expensive. but since we only cover a small area, should be easier to manage the cost

I bought that mesh from LFS in JB (hardly-full palm size) for RM4 / piece.
RM50 for the size equal to half area of 3 ft tank is a bargain!

P/s: unless I dah 'kena' with that RM4 per piece.

Found polysterene for my 3.5 ft tank from the newly bought furnitures boxes..

The tank has some silicon stains on the middle of the glasses, any idea how do I remove them?

1. Put them in a pail.
2. Pour boiling water onto them until they are submerged.
3. Let them soak for two weeks until all the tanins leach out.

I like to repeat the part 2 and 3 until the tanins have been all leached out, or until the water they are soaking in fairly clear.

advisable to put in vinegar + water to soak the DW? maybe can speed things up.

soaking will keep the DW water logged and help the yellow tannin to leak out.... smile.gif
