hi thanks for the advice! yesterday the second engineer came, and wow... exactly the same problem again!! i can't believe it! how can there be so many defective keyboards??!! and all not working at the exact same spot also!! this is ridiculous!! and the engineer said they will replace with a new keyboard... again???!! wow then every week i wait for them to replace keyboards??!! why didn't they check what's wrong with the first keyboard they took back?? this is just poor technical support, cannot find out the root of the problem...

ugh so angry... i emailed them, threaten to ask for refund... so far no reply yet... you are right, guess i should call them...  vmad.gif

To all Sifus here,

Could I get a Dell 15R SE (with Ivy Bridge) but without a dedicated graphics card?

I don't actually need the dedicated graphic as I want the notebook to run as cool and as energy efficient as possible.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.

Is that mean Inspiron 15 with i3-3217U/3227U (is it Inspiron 15R SE or no SE?) have that option?

I would also would like to know if it is possible to get model that come with no OS as I really don't like Windows 8 thus I want to install Windows 7 myself.

Thanks.

third engineer came just now, with another keyboard, and with the exact same problem!! the engineer called the Dell support to tell them about the problem, and Dell support said "I don't see the issue here, do you know how to type?" wow apparently my problem is i don't know how to type even though i've never had any issue with every single laptop i've ever used before. he refused my request for a replacement, saying that i'll have the same issue if they send a new one. what??? then give me a new one before you make an assumption!! geez... i told him i went to lowyat last week to try their display unit of the exact same model, there was no such problem with that unit at all. and he had the nerve to suggest that 'i should press the spacebar in the middle only'. and they said Dell customer service is the best???? i asked for a refund and he said they'll charge some RM80 for refund??? what??? you gave me a defective unit and you want to charge me for refund??? and the laptop is not even 1 month old!!

the engineer took over and suggested to change the motherboard and maybe palmrest? i'll just have to wait until then. but really, Dell customer service is the worst ever. they can't even find out what's the problem and belittle their customers so they can get away with their defective products.

you are really unlucky. maybe it could be the wire problem, or the pin in the mobo is defective, or its the style of chiclet keyboards?

Sadly none of the model on the list is 17W version of Ivy bridge.

Microsoft should give users ability to change GUI to the Windows 7 style. I really don't like touchscreen laptop and especially the Windows 8 interface.

Thanks for the reply.

Are they come with dedicated GPU? I would prefer one without it as I like my laptop run cooler and power effecient.

as other forummer has mentioned, unfortunately not. Only some of the Inspiron ultrabooks (..z model) has obmitted the dGpu.

If you are absolutely bothered by the power consumption of the dGPu (I tot Optimus is already doing a great job in its intelligent power management??), then google "Bumblebee" .. Apparently, it is an open project which allows you to disable the dGpu (but I gather it is only meant for Linux environment)..

Just look at the number of spec variation Dell has for each consumer laptop models, and compare with other brands smile.gif

Even for laptop models with Nvidia / AMD GPU, if you are not running software that need it, the discrete GPU will not be used. Owner just pay for something that you are not using laugh.gif

If you want laptop to run cool and energy efficient, you should pay more attention on the HDD rather than GPU. Take out the HDD, replace it with SSD. Laptop become lighter, run cooler, quieter, more responsive, much much more energy efficient (at least 45min more battery performance) ....

Call Dell, DEMAND a new laptop. Tell them changing keyboard 3 times and still could not eradicate / identity the source of problem is not acceptable. All the engineers that serviced you can confirm your complaint is valid.
Just demand it cold and collected.
If you don't like to talk to that particular Dell support, demand to talk to someone else smile.gif

Thanks for the reply.

Actually things like SSD is already on my to do list. Since it is not really an issue, so I decided not to ask. A for dedicated GPU, it is things that not easily handle thus prompted me to ask for advice. For me I really don't want those extra power guzzler in my system. If I were to play a serious games (which I rarely have time for), I would just turn on the desktop.

W8 at RM100? Is this good or bad? Bear in mind that I will need to buy W7 and install it on the notebook. I just hate W8 GUI.

i had familiar with windows 8 in around 30 minutes yesterday. i cant say i hate nor i love it but i just love the mobile apps that are pre-installed. it helps me connect to facebook and my gmail while receiving notifications. but sometimes, when i wanted to switch to desktop, its just annoying a bit. smile.gif

oh yes, the CD for windows 7 home basic maybe cost around RM50.
