As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Thank u bro for the heads up.. But i think one of theirs hv 'Man Utd is the crybaby of English football' as his siggy. If that is permissible, mine shud be too.. If the Mods ask me to remove it, i will gladly do as I know the Mods being fair..

Btw, I just copied those words from a photo where a banner held by our fans. The photo was posted here ystrdy..

Yea, I know that siggy and totally can't understand why it is needed to put. Saw that banner also, that's one of consequence from their PR's disaster I'd say, which they've been trying to fix since yesterday. it's ok then, just my opinion smile.gif

Ryan Giggs, just one appearance short of reaching 900 for Manchester United.

Two decades of playing at the highest level, legendary. And still playing well even though he is 38. rclxms.gif

Shame that his legacy is slightly tainted by his actions off the pitch. sad.gif

I see what you did there biggrin.gif enough la wei, I tought we've move on from that seeing from recent posts, evra's a funny guy who i keep enjoying seeing his video in youtube biggrin.gif he's like 'glue' which make the team more united, that makes him chosen captain as Vida's deputy above other players. Still remember both leaders Vida and Evra came together in same transfer window after our painful UCL exit, must be chosen as best transfer window for us biggrin.gif

"Focusing on Saturday's action on the field, despite so much attention on other matters, the Daily Star's Brian Woolnough praises Wayne Rooney and wonders if he's changed his style as he now has 17 goals and no bookings in the league this term."

nah.. of course Evra thought about that (snubbing Suarez hand).. he hate him, thats not a secret. but in the end, Evra offerred his hand reluctantly (or not), and Suarez didnt. its PR disaster for Liverpool (reputation, sponsorship, etc). bad and selfish move from Suarez.

TBH, me myself not fan of Evra after these incidents and before that (debacle of France team in the last World Cup).. he's considered a veteran and acting captain in United team, i expect more maturity, better example and leadership from him.. he should act more cooler at the final whistle.. but his funny impressions always make me smile..

having said that, Suarez also not an angel. he was a trouble maker in Ajax (he bit an opponent FFS, called 'Cannibal of Ajax'), public enemy to African in the last World Cup (the handball incident), love to dive etc.

u have to admire Liverpool fans for defending Suarez until the end, no matter what. the theory of "Evra snubbed Suarez's handshake, not the other way" and that still picture as a 'prove'.. LOL.. they live up "You'll Never Walk Alone", good for them..

those liverpool fans who defended suarez since last october match till now are really fools and stupid

evra's no angel too but in this case he's the one getting abused and insulted and correctly make a report to the FA where a long and exhaustive investigation was carried out .suarez admitted to making at least few times reference to evra skin color where the two players are confronting each other in a heated manner and also, the investigating panel found suarez provided unreliable and inconsistence evidence.the FA make a decision and ban him for 8 matches and many even called Evra a disgrace like steve macmahon. come on , Evra is the one getting abused and insulted and still he offer his hand to the thug

LFC and kenny dalglish make a fool of themselves on the support suarez T-shirt campaign in the game against Stoke City and KK repeatedly voice out in defence of suarez and at it again eventhough the issues have seem to soften and was it after the game against man utd at anfield FA cup by saying suarez should not be ban in the first place. i am assuming KK ,probably under immense pressure from the below par performance of his recent expensive signing such as caroll ,henderson ,downing felt obliged to support suarez who is the only one performing to expectation and in doing this he may have sent the wrong message to the wrong man in suarez who from this fiasco may believe to himself that he is bigger than LFC and dalglish

suarez lied to dalglish on that he will shake evra hand and happily ,dalglish issue a press statement on the same thing and hope this issue will be put to rest once the handshakes is done but to his dismay this was not done by suarez and during the post match interview with Sky TV . dalglish was make to look like a fool ,once again

i've read posts at liverpool forums and was utterly disgusted to learn t on the way and manner they defended suarez who is a big liar who lied to their living legend. dalglish have shown so much weakness in this issue that it needed intervention from yankees across the Atlantic to makes things right . how pathetic and sick most of their fans and even living legend manager carried themselves which is self inflicted in the first place and it could even be a forced apologies

aren't you aware that liverpool fans have been saying they win the league next year every year the past 20 years and they will continue to say the same thing the next 20 years

in some way since they last won the league , i think their club been into lots of problems especially PR and recently they thought they have sign a genius who play with passion and wrongly back him with passion but this player left their most famous son in the dry by assuring him he do the handshake but in the end betrayed the famous son. what a shame and the biggest shame is they tend to blame everything under the sky but themselves

and the truth was Suarez played against us twice this season, but they failed to beat us on both occasion.. NO??? laugh.gif tongue.gif

so what crap is that he talking??

They still cant see that its the whole world against Suarez eh? Even some of their fans are against what Suarez did.. look at that Manogaran guy, The Star columnist, he enjoys whacking United in the paper, but look what is his stand on Suarez now... or have we bought him too??? go sort that out!

And with his combo with scholesy, we have went on to the ucl finals three times. Why oh why he is not considered as a starter for england?

name not big enough? it's no secret capello preferred big names up until the latest wc...

apart from that, under eriksson and mclaren era, he was also kinda overlooked...gerrard and lampard were definitely better players that time but their combo couldnt work, and england manager were to stubborn to leave them out of the starting lineup...not to mention barry was ahead of him too sweat.gif

Carrick is certainly under utilized for England, passing and vision is his strong point, while the likes of Gerrard and Lampard playing together never works due to their similar role in their respective clubs. Behind the pecking order even though he has proved on domestic level grumble.gif

Maybe they prefer someone more physical/who 'works' harder. That's why Carrick never got a look in. They are clueless really. They shove Scholes down the left before he retired. His form this and last year have been very good IMO. He should get a look in this time, but probably the likes of Barry and Parker will still be ahead of him because they appear to work harder.

Gerrard, Lampard, Parker, Barry, Wilshere(if fit) would most probably go. Hopefully Carrick and Cleverley will go as well..plus Scholes.

United fan sells land to block City expansion

QUOTE
A Manchester United fan aims to block rival Manchester City's "goals of football domination" by selling off thousands of parcels of a site earmarked by the world's richest club for a 100-million-pound training complex.

Businessman Shaun O'Brien has divided the land at his vehicle recovery company, OB Trucks, near City's Etihad Stadium, into 18,500 square-foot plots for sale in a bid to disrupt a proposed council order to make him sell it.

He was selling the plots for 250 pounds each through website, Unite Against the City, to "ardent Reds and anybody else that feels strongly about our David & Goliath situation," in order to make the club negotiate individually and fairly for each plot, the website said.

The sale had attracted buyers from around the world, including the United States and Spain, since the website went live on February 6, O'Brien told Reuters, declining to reveal the sales figures. "We're very close to fulfilling the 5,000 minimum."

The campaign was "to prevent Manchester City's attempts to acquire our land in Eastlands, Manchester, in order to further their goals of football domination," O'Brien wrote on the website.

Local newspaper Manchester Evening News said O'Brien had refused a one-million-pound offer from City to leave the site, stalling the club's bid to redevelop a run-down, 80-acre plot near their stadium.

O'Brien said City had offered him 200,000 pounds for the land for the past two years, though they had said they would pay another 750,000 pounds for moving and expenses.

"But it's just not enough," he said. "I've been here for 15 years, I had no intention to sell [the land]... as a business who want my land to further their business they should come and sit down, negotiate and we'll hack out a figure, whereas all along they've said we'll give you 200,000 pounds or we'll get the council to CPO you," he said.

A compulsory purchase order has now been issued by Manchester City Council and the club to try to force O'Brien to sell at market value.

Manchester City hold the title of the world's richest club, gained after they were bought by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi three years ago

nah.. of course Evra thought about that (snubbing Suarez hand).. he hate him, thats not a secret. but in the end, Evra offerred his hand reluctantly (or not), and Suarez didnt. its PR disaster for Liverpool (reputation, sponsorship, etc). bad and selfish move from Suarez.

LOL.. they live up "You'll Never Walk Alone", good for them..

lol, city doesn't have enough money eh?

"The CPO was issued the day before Christmas Eve – reducing the number of days we had in order to put in an objection. We have experienced hate mail, threats, abusive phone calls, visits from ‘well wishers’ all aimed at pressuring us into accepting their offer. Is this the way the world ‘s richest football club goes about getting what it wants? "

"Unfortunately for them, they can’t use CPO when buying players, but when they want to buy land, it appears that they can."

city is just dumb for not offering more to acquire that land. If they are more polite towards the owner, they would have got it. Now city will have to purchase it from the new owner. Serve them right.

Nice stats Carrick, but stats are only stats. The influence in the game is another story. You can end up at the back doing 200 passes with the back line and have 100% stats. Almost everytime when Carrick partners Scholes, man of the match honors goes to the later. Problem is he doesn't do anything spectacular for me. At the same time he doesn't do much wrong with it as well, so probably that's why he doesn't get the heat often.

That all has changed now. The villain who famously concede valuable possession and unfortunately the ball ends up back in the net as well. The 08/09 CL final defeat to Barca. The 09/10 CL versus B.munich, both goals his creation of mistake. Carrick makes Gerard look super good I must say. When he loses the ball, in the big games those teams really make you pay. Carrick plays the ball backwards and slows the play down. With exciting players coming down the ranks, he seems out of place.

He does have his moments. Like the Roma demolition. I just think his price tag is not justified. At all. He is decent and is playing well atm. Can't wait for the Ajax game.

disagree with most of the part you say about carrick, i used to think that way too. But football is a team game, not everyone has to do step overs to effect the game. Carrick's form has gone up and down, but this season, it has been above average, and what he brings to the team, is invaluable. And trust me, he will be there for a long time, and I can see SAF like him a lot too.. smile.gif

nah, player like Denis Irwin never spectacular for us.. but he's a legend in my book. Carrick came to us, 'co -accidentally' we restart our glory years. Carrick definitely will be legend for us if he can duplicate his form these days in another 2 or 3 seasons.

if u ask me the player i hope not getting any injury ATM, i will name Carrick. the next probably DDG and Rooney.. the player capable to fill Carrick's role ATM is Jones. and he's injured too..

he's not spectacular. but essential to the team..

I just feel he is overpriced and you don't need me to point out why he is left out of the squad nowdays and not really in the England frame. Simple, there are just better and exciting players who can do what he does. The only reason he is partnering Scholes now is due to heavy injury list. He is no doubt behind,Scholes,Giggs,Park,Ando,Cleverly,Fletcher in SAF's choice this season. He is playing well atm, like I said and hope he uses this chance to reinsert himself as an important part of the squad.

I think, first and foremost, is that people need to realise and understand that football is not all about blockbuster tackles, dribbling past 10 players, 40 goals a season and wonder goals every game.

And on a side note, Carrick has been the first choice midfielder the past 5 years, 1 CL and 4 BPL titles. smile.gif

Wat

Scholes? Maybe but you know he can't play every game
Giggs? Same as Scholes. But if you ask me I'll say No. Their roles are different
Park? No. He's kinda situational and maybe depends on form / teams
Ando? No
Cleverley? Too little time to prove he's better. Carrick was injured early in the season so you can't say either Cleverley or Carrick is the better choice
Fletcher? Look at Park

Well, he definitely not the same Carrick we saw in 2007. His form is off for 1-2 season back. But now he has chance to get back into team (due to injury crisis) and he has done superbly. I think only Scholes is better than him in term of passer in game. But Scholes is lacking the interception.

I had the same impression of you last season. Why Carrick was still in the squad eventhough we all can see how shite he was. His passing was amazingly not connecting at all. It's like he was playing FIFA and holding the Long Pass button for too long.

But now (yes you MUST people, I have repent, but the sig it still stays there yo) I have to admit, Carrick is having the form of his life. One thing why he was overpriced is because he's English, and back then he was still a young midfielder, 24 if I'm not mistaken. But the gamble did not turn out good, he did not get selected for England due to his injuries . But doesn't matter now, what we have now is a very good midfielder capable of intercepting and passing, but not yet Roy Keane style (whereby he does a karate kick two footed tackle).

In terms of the behindness, however,
he is behind Scholes and Giggs,
it's hard to compare to Park because both have different style of play,
Ando is behind him by a landslide at the moment due to his form,
Cleverley is, well, we can't judge him yet because he has not played much games for the first team,
Fletcher was on top him, until he took an arrow to the knee until he got that serious injury that kicked him out for the entire season.

I beg to differ. He has not been off form. The stats back up this claim as his passing percentages, interceptions, tackles a game all speak for itself. Heck, the fact that Carrick has been our first choice midfielder for 5 years and now going on to the 6th year, speaks for itself. I'll admit that he has had bad patches of form, especially when he's not fit, but that's normal.

Carrick started as a box to box player, playing side by side with Scholes in 06/07. Back then, he was allowed to play forward more often and make more ambitious passes.

By 08/09, he was instructed to play as a dm to shield the back four. This "slump" that most people keep harping on about, is not a slump, but Carrick being asked to be a dm. At this point, his game became all about winning and retaining possession. This is proven by the stats I mentioned above. He isn't allowed to take risks, move forward, make ambitious passes, because that is not his job. We have Rooney and Scholes for that. He is being a team player and it's sad that people don't see this and keep asking him to do what he is instructed by SAF not to do. And people call him shit because of that.

It is only now, with Scholes back side by side with Carrick, that the team have reverted back to the 06/07 formula. All of a sudden, you see people praising Carrick again, as if he started out good, suddenly became shit, and now suddenly became good again. When all the while, he's been that damn good. Nothing has changed. Carrick is still Carrick. The only difference is that he is now being given more freedom to move forward and make passes. Like in 06/07

That's why I say. People need to understand that football isn't all about the flashy stuff. It's as much about the subtle stuff as well. Like tactics, interceptions, etc.

While I agree with you that Carrick is/was overpriced when we bought him 6 years ago, he's been a solid performer for the club. The club isn't about 11 players + 5 subtitutes. The first team consists of about 25 players who all play their part in our success. Yes, Carrick isn't the best performer and he doesn't make killer passes like Scholes and yes, I agree that I've tugged at my hair so many times when Carrick decides to play a backward/side pass when we're trying to counter attack. But after all that, we cannot deny that he's been a good servant to the club over the years. Of course there are better holding midfielders than Carrick around. I personally prefer a box-to-box midfielder like Roy Keane or Darren Fletcher or a defensive midfielder like Owen Hargreaves or Makelele. But this depends on the tactics employed by the manager and in this case it's SAF.

I totally disagree with you that he is behind Scholes, Giggs, Park, Ando, Cleverley and Fletcher in SAF's choice. I honestly think that there is no bigger Carrick fan than SAF. He's stuck by Carrick through his highs and lows and has not wavered in his support for him. As I said earlier, it's a squad game and SAF will play who he deems fit according to the tactic he wants. This could change according to the opposition. Playing against offensive teams, he could choose a more defensive approach like Park and Valencia on the wings with Fletcher and Carrick in the centre or for teams who come out defensive against us, he can choose Scholes to pick them apart and someone like Cleverley/Ando to support him with Nani and someone else on the wings. I personally prefer Ando and Cleverley because I love the offensive movement and fluidity they showed in the few games they played together but against more experienced midfields, their inexperience could be picked apart.

It depends on your definition of passing. Carrick could work on his long range passing. This is where Scholes excels in and Carrick doesn't show off that side of his game often enough. In terms of through balls, Scholes, Giggs and Rooney are miles ahead of Carrick at this point in time. Both Giggs and Rooney does this extremely well because their movement with the ball at their feet is excellent and they are such a threat with it that it creates gaps and space for teammates to run into. Their proven ability to find them with a through ball is immaculate. Carrick is good at short passes to move the ball around to get the defense on their toes and the catch them off guard rotating from 1 side of the field to the other. In the end, what I'm trying to say is that there's much more to passing than just kicking the ball with your feet to a teammate.

Still flashy stuff, ambitious passes play important role. stats isnt all there is to judge also. it doest really tell the whole story

i like carrick coz he is such a team player, dont lose ball and work hard on the pitch. always make room for others to pass him.but he did shown some slump the past 2 season. he can do better as shown first 3 season. glad he hv step up finding back his form this season. But he never was a shit. people who call carrick a shit really dont understand how football being played

*
cant agree more than that, personally I love carrick, well his passing is not as great as scholes, but his interception is inch perfect, everytime when he is on the field, his 1st step of interception is superb crucial for tackling, he is definately one of the box to box midfield around in the league, the only player I can compare with him will be Scott Parker or the Real Madrid Alonso

IMO the reason Carrick's form slumped in the previous seasons is due to adapting for his new role. Let's see if he can continue his form around, but most definitely he is the 1st choice CM right now.

interception is the new tackling since years ago. replacing makalele's role while player like mascherano doesn't much fit in anymore imo.

and with titles he's brought with the team since he joined us, he's not overpriced.

but he's being underrated is not surprising, even scholes was clearly underrated, usually top football players recognized quality of 'them', better than pundits/supporters.

For me, carrick has been our automatic starter since he's fit. He's like rooney, if not injured, he'll play..he's not like the bullish type of roy keane, he's the opposite...i would say he's like rio (opposite of vida's style). Carrick is more of a classy type..trust me, if cleverley's fit, he'll partner carrick..and he's our first choice actually...the question is who to partner carrick..is it scholes, cleverley, giggs, fletch, ando or whoever is available.

*
I thought football is a team game? We as a team failed in those games, against Barca especially in thw two finals where we got outclassed. And against Barca, with how they pressed us, even Scholes would give the ball away. As for the Bayern game the fact that we were a man down for the 2nd half were the reason we went out.

As for his passing range, it depends on the role he plays. But if you look at Scholes' stats, it would be the same sideways passes that would dominate the chart. And I read somewhere a while back, he attempted more forward passes than any other players aside from the defenders at the club.

You expect him to be spectacular? Why is that? His role in the team is to shield the defence and keep the ball moving and he does it well than most players. He's been first choice ever since he got here, although he struggled for a bit before this season losing his place to Fletcher. But he was struggling with his ankle injury if I'm not mistaken.

People have been underrating our midfield a lot over the years. But with the supposedly weak midfield, we won the league 4 times in five years and went to the CL finals 3 times, winning it once. Should have been 4 finals really if the ref had any balls to give Bommel a couple more cards in that game..and against Inter, I would fancy our chances.

He's been consistently been very good in most games. He had a dip in form, which happens to even Scholes and Giggs when they're nearing 30, but this season ever since he got back in the side, he has stepped up another gear. He's very important to our defence too being the only one currently capable of shielding them.

Indeed wink.gif

Remember when he scored a goal this season (where he dribble from middle of the field) sir alex even said that he shouldn't left his position to attack. He should be covering the back four wink.gif

Simple passes are often overlook, I'd say. Cleverly has been doing what Carrick has done all the years with just an another advancement. A mobile type of Carrick.

Despite of getting worried of Carrick, we should be worry of Anderson. I'm not trying to question his ability but his consistencies that gets me. He's at what age now? Yet, he just can't be consistent with his gameplay.

And I agree with Wan, our midfield isn't as poor as it rumored to be. Just because we don't have any BIG names, we are NOT poor.

Park? In the CM role he's behind everyone.
Scholes, Giggs, Cleverley..they would play with Carrick next to them.
Ando, still too hit and miss right now but he too more often than not is more suoted to play next to someone like Carrick.
Fletcher when in form is certainly a threat to his place when in form. But he can't shield the midfield as good as Carrick does.

As for overprice..look at all the English players that move clubs over the years. They all cost a lot. And his performance and contribution have more than made up for it.

tbh I din want to use these as evidence, as what people says youtube can make everyone looks like Messi. But what the hell. My point is that he can make spectacular pass or superb run, just that he's not supposed to do so. You can't have the two Fabregas on one side, or two Ronaldos on one side, that's why Scholes is usually partnered by Carrick, with the latter cover the former when he loses possesion or sitting deeper than other midfield player he's paired with. In other word, if Alex Song is now starting to venture forward, Arsenal are proned to get counter attack more than usual. That is why Carrick is placed just in front of our CBs, to protect the back-line more.

i like carrick coz he is such a team player, dont lose ball and work hard on the pitch. always make room for others to pass him.but he did shown some slump the past 2 season. he can do better as shown first 3 season. glad he hv step up finding back his form this season. But he never was a shit. people who call carrick a shit really dont understand how football being played

Definitely, he's behind Scholes, but besides that, he is the best passer in the team. The pass completion stats show that.

To help emphasise your point, Barca topped the sideways/backwards passing list in the CL last season. Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta all made the top 5, IINM. Carrick, did not make the top 3 or top 5 or something like that.

And I believe part of the reasons Carrick did not play at the start of the season was because he was injured. And the Cleverley and Anderson combo was simply amazing. Although, defensively, they still had a lot of work to do.

Spot on. I felt the same way too. He seldom do long passing like what Scholes did. He likes touch and go.
He's abit like Xavi but of course still a long way to each that level.

The United strike duo will hope to form the front pairing again on Thursday after linking up well against Liverpool, with Javier Hernandez the only other striker in the travelling 20-man squad. Rooney expects Sir Alex Ferguson to field his big guns and will look to score his first-ever goals in the competition after bagging 27 so far in the Champions League.

"I’m actually really looking forward to playing in the Europa League," stressed Rooney. "It’s a new challenge for all of us and we want to win it. There’s no point being in a competition if you’re not going to try and win it and I’m sure the manager will put a strong team out. It would be great to be the first United team to win the trophy and that’s our aim."

Meanwhile, Welbeck, who has scored two goals from three starts in Europe for United, is keen to pick up plenty more valuable experience from playing against continental opposition.

"It was unexpected [being in the Europa League] because obviously we're United and we're required to qualify and get into the next round of the Champions League," Danny told ManUtd.com.

"Unfortunately we didn’t do that, we got knocked out and everyone was so down afterwards. We just want to atone by hopefully making amends in the Europa League. We’ve got an exciting tie against Ajax to come, we’re two clubs with great history and it should be a good tie home and away."

United's record in all competitions this season when Rooney and Welbeck have started together:

P    W    D    L    GF    GA
15  13    1    1    43    19

Rooney: 15 goals in 15 games
Welbeck: 6 goals in 15 games

14:50 You may have read one or two reports from England claiming Danny Welbeck and Nani left their passports at home this morning. Don't worry, though: I can confirm both players are definitely here in Amsterdam.

*

He just needs to steer clear of injuries. It's frustrating really. Just when he starts to put good consistent performances, his knee will go(arrow?). Potentially a beast there and seems to struck up a pretty good partnership with Cleverley. I agrer that someone like Cleverley does bring out the best of Ando. He need to be busy on the ball to be effective, and with Cleverley, he gets to see plenty of the ball not to mention Cleverley's movement open up the space all over.

I hope his fitness will improve. If Pogba decides to stay and he performs as well if not better than his last cameo, we will look very comfortable there..

Well that's my point. Some people only look at the flashy stuff. They don't look at the bread and butter.

I've always felt that Cleverley is like short passing on hyperspeed. He loves all those little one - twos at break neck speed and that seems to bring the best out of Anderson.
*

Yeah Carrick was struggling with injuries at the start. One of yhe reason we went out of the CL. Injuries to us this season is ridiculous.

I think we went a bit stale in midfield ever since Tevez's last season with us. We didnt score a lot that season compared to other seasons even with CR, Tevez, Roon and Berba as the firepower. Teams knew how we play with our CMs acting as the shield and playing more like a DLP.

Cleverley completely changed things around. His hyperspeed plays, the one two's, quick passing and taking no more than two touches most of the time.. and he's always on the move. His play just open up so much space. Add people who's comfortable on the ball and mobility around him like Ando, Young, Nani, Rooney, Welbeck and the young defenders.. with them pressing like mad, they will wreck havoc. Its beautiful when in full flow. I would like to see that again with in form Valencia and Carrick thrown in the mix.

Wat

Fletcher? Look at Park

if you would bother to bold the "in this season" then it would make sense now would it. carrick only came into the frame this season after most of them are injured. the exciting attacking play we had in the early season made him redundant. Please read that I agree he is playing well and making a point with his quality in the squad. i get it,he doesnt score many goals, doesnt dribble...we all know thats not in his game. please read before making comments. its hurts the head as hard as the denis irwin comparison.

anybody staying up for the arsenal vs ac milan game?

Carrick was having problems with his ankles at the start of the season. That's why he didn't feature much. And SAF made a point saying Carrick is a slow starter. With us looking very vurnerable at the back, he would have been thrown into action even withous seeing the others went out inuured.

Unless one of the wingers leave, I can't see us bringing in another winger. Then there's that 25 squad list we have to register in the league n CL.

I'm a bit worried about the game tonight. Ajax have Dutch legends Frank de Boer as their manager and Dennis Bergkamp as his assistant. Hopefully we can get a comfortable win, seeing that we have a tough game away against Norwich 2 days after facing them again next week.

Those two are damn fine players back in their playing days, and de Boer in his first season as manager helped Ajax to win the Dutch league after like 6-7 years drought. Ajax are no pushovers, but hopefully we can win big tonight.

I'm not doubting SAF, but we failed to win against much lesser known teams like FC Basel this season...

Fancy a comeback? Ferguson catches up with former United stopper Van der Sar

In the last couple of months, making a Premier League comeback has become the fashionable thing to do as Paul Scholes, Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane and even Landon Donovan will testify.
But it’s Manchester United making most of the headlines as Sir Alex Ferguson continues to turn towards his old favourites to lead his squad.

First Scholes came out of retirement until the end-of-the-season, then Ryan Giggs penned a new one-year-deal.
And it seems with rookie keeper David De Gea struggling between the sticks, Fergie fancies another raid on the retirement home.

Ahead of United’s last 32 Europa League tie at Ajax, Fergie was seen speaking to former Red Devils stopper Edwin van der Sar during their club’s training session at the Amsterdam Arena.
But the 21-year-old Spaniard can breathe a sigh of relief that the 41-year-old will not fill his gloves anytime soon.
The Dutchman admits he misses the game but he has ruled out returning - for now.
Don’t be surprised if he has to change his mobile number to get Fergie off his back though

Wayne Rooney breaks embargo to reveal 'Switcharooney' horse name

QUOTE
user posted image

The Manchester United man's first-choice name for the two-year-old was Oceans Seven, but after finding out the name was unavailable, the striker soon settled on Switcharooney.

Within minutes of the announcement, made by the player himself despite slapping media with a gagging order until 12pm, the horse had its own Twitter page.

The nag opened its account with: 'Hi everyone. Follow me and you'll be the first to know when I'm entered for a race by my trainer @TomDascombe. Looking forward to it!'

Rooney bought two horses for a combined fee of £100,000 before Christmas and kept them at Tom Dascombe's Manor House Stables in Cheshire, which are financed by his United team-mate Michael Owen.

Rooney called one of his steeds Tomway in honour of his dad Thomas Wayne, but did not immediately name the other.

It has also been revealed that the jockey riding the England international's horse will wear pink and white silks - a decision quite possibly made by the player's wife, Coleen.

Rod Street, Chief Executive of Racing for Change, tipped the nag for big things, saying: 'You can bet that these names will go in every punter's notebook.

'Rooney has a great strike rate so it's hard to imagine that his nags won't score as well.'

with young, nani and valencia i don't think 5 wingers is enough if they're shooting for everything every season.

kinda rubbish performance for the first half...once the ball reach nani, it will be completed wasted..for young, most of his crosses are off target...but well, both wings just came back from injury..hope they will perform better!!looking forward to 2nd half though...

hernandez keep making runs but through ball almost all fail.either over hit or not accurate. yeah Inzhagi keeps getting offside but he only needs one chance. also notice we losing headers in our own box? scary lol. nani is inviting SAF to make a substitution ahhaha.

I guess people don't realize that is typical winger problem after injury. Winger needs time to adjust their game

weird but i was pleased with performance of the lads in first half, nani and young-who had couple of nice through ball to chica- struggling are okay looking they're just getting back. though i'd rather see young/nani in left and valencia in right, rarely saw nani did good in right though.

jones and clev are doing good so far. Chica gotta get more decent pass from others, he did good with his movement though trapped some offsides.

2-0. a very quiet game.

good play by the team. both wingers managed to recover in the 2nd half, despite both of them just got back from injury.

welbeck did not perform up to standards. boo that kid

Cleverley had a very good hour, with almost all of his passes connecting well. i particularly liked his one touch passing.

all in all, a good win.

Valencia out for a month

Antonio Valencia’s blistering season is set for an unwanted and untimely break after the Ecuadorian sustained an injury against Ajax.

The Reds winger, voted United's Player of the Month for January, hurt his hamstring while helping to create the second goal at the Amsterdam ArenA, scored by Javier Hernandez.

Valencia was immediately withdrawn from the action and replaced by Danny Welbeck for the final few minutes. Sir Alex Ferguson later confirmed it was a hamstring injury likely to keep Antonio out for four weeks.

More to follow...

Oh No !!!

great result.. we can shuffle more next week.. hopefully Valencia is OK..

Nani, Jones, Cleverley and Young are still rusty. but at least they are coming back. Fabio looked very good in first half, but not so good in the second. at least he played 90 minutes and improving his match fitness.

De Gea made very important save in the first half. Ferdinand dan Evans have comfortable night, this pair getting better every game. nice assist by Rooney, Carrick maintain his great form. im still frustrated with Hernandez's link up play, but at least his done his job by scoring the second goal..

have a nice weekend lads..

valencia need to regain his form again after coming out from injury and that will take some time again..really hope nani and young can do well at the moment...losing valencia at this time is really a bad news...and losing him in an europa game is really unworthy...

we should be ok, IF nani, young does the game instead of individual proves.

were ok on the scedule coming this end of feb, march.i reckon valencia should be back by the time we face wba or fulham. as for his form i think this shouldnt cause any major interruptions compared to early pre/post season when he was on duty and had that horrible long lay off.

Valencia out will be a blow. He stepped up another gear with the way he just buldoze through the middle. The only direction he knew was to go wide, so it's nice to see him run at people through the middle. Very effective too.
Good to see Hernandez improving his link up play although sometimes he did them a bit too much, and his passing sometimes is off a bit, but it sure does look like he's been training at them.
Fabio played well too I thought. Good to see. Now just stay fit so we can rest Evra now and then.

They still hurt over that?

oh yeah, Pogba should suffice to hold against Norwich attack

even though we lost Valencia, with the return of Young & Nani and complete set of defence (apart from Vidic);

I would's take them (the Canaries) lightly as they did managed to hold out at OT before 67th min when Ando scored the 1st goal and Welbeck wrapped up the game for us.

if i was the manager i would go full force against the canaries.
then setup for counter attack for ajax if i have to rest many players.

We play Ajax before Norwich biggrin.gif

Ajax will have to attack us to get back into the tie so counter attack could work for us as long as both Ashley & Nani get their match sharpness back.

yes. Norwich is very spirited and as evidence, they managed to comeback after a goal down.

they're similar like Blackpool last season but better. a good teamwork, underrated bunch of squad.

Holt is a fit to PL. given United quality, we can snatch a win as long as United win the midfield battle against Norwich

Vidic could return for end of season

good news but unrealistic.if he is fit for train before end of season then that would be good since he can come in for pre-season with out any hiccups.but as far this season's game, its too early, too bigger of a risk for some one who destroyed 3 ligaments at once.

for Ajax's game, Smalling, Jones, Fabio, Rafael, Young and Nani should play to regain their match fitness.. but not all in once. Berba should start before he start sulking more.. DDG to retain his place.

keep Rio, Rooney, Evra and Carrick in bench. they are integral parts of the team, played a lot football and injury prone (Rio)

the likes of Pogba, Keane, Fryers can feature when the game saved at 60++ min mark.

hmm...since Fergie is an admirer for RvP, is there a chance that we will be making a cheeky bid to sign him over to Old Trafford this summer? brows.gif brows.gif

although Arsenal is not likely willing to let him go to their rival though

im kinda worried with Valencia injured. if u noticed, most of the goals/threat comes from him when he played. and we start playing good football when he returned from the injury.

can't find the actual article but SAF did said before this that he wont be remaining in the club once he retires, so that he wont be stepping on the new manager's toes with his continuous presence within the club, which what happened when Sir Matt Busby retired

but everything has 2 sides, if this issue is handled well, it will only bring good to the club

LOL part!

He also says his wife is keen for him to remain active and has even suggested he becomes a milkman when he steps down as manager.

Just few days back it seems RG11 is destined for the gaffer role.

Ferguson himself is a long-time admirer of Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho and believes the Portuguese would get more 'freedom' to do the job in England than he gets in Spain.

actually if you see some of the united documentaries during the dark days before "you can't win with kids" SAF was in a trouble he got some aging stars that were doing well but couldn't take it to the next level, then came wholesale changes with Mark Hughes and a few other favorites being shown the door to make way for Fergie Fledglings add Eric Cantona the recipe was complete! (Before this Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs was already in the team).

Ex-Reds praise Tom

QUOTE
Former United midfield greats Nicky Butt and Bryan Robson are both looking forward to seeing more of Tom Cleverley as the season progresses.

The 22-year-old made his first appearance since October in Thursday's 2-0 win at Ajax and looks set to play a key role in the remainder of the campaign after being praised by Sir Alex in his enforced absence.

Butt and Robson, who are well placed to discuss any midfielders at Old Trafford, agree that Cleverley's ability is without question as he aims to cement a starting spot again after starting the first four 2011/2012 Barclays Premier League games.

"I've known Cleverley since he was a kid," Butt told ManUtd.com recently. "When I first started my coaching badges at United with Scholesy, Neville, Giggsy and Keaney, they were the team we were taking as 15-year-olds then.

"He was always a bright talent and, since he's been on loan, he's come back and been phenomenal really. He needs to keep working hard at it. I'm sure he will as he comes across as a good lad and he needs to listen to the manager, coaches and experienced pros. He can go anywhere really, he's got that much ability.

"Cleverley is a much better technical footballer than I ever was. It just goes to show how it's moving on with these players."

Robson, speaking to MUTV in a recent interview, admits it was disappointing that an ankle problem curtailed Cleverley's progress at a time when he was imposing himself in the top flight.

"Tom has done great," enthused the ex-England captain. "He's been very unfortunate with the injury side of it.

"He could have made a real name for himself as he was getting there but he's got time on his side. We know he's got great ability. He's got to build his reputation up and hopefully he'll become the real top player that a lot of people think he is going to be."

i prefer SAF not stay at the club, not in formal capacity. i dont want the next manager overshadow by SAF. SAF is too big at Old Trafford. unless the new manager himself want SAF to stay as advisor (or whatever the role called)

i love JM as his successor. and if JM, SAF shouldnt stay near OT. JM love full authority.

about SAF missed to sign Joe Hart for 100k in 2006, nah.. u can always sign 2020 Best Player in the World for peanuts now.. we just dont know who..

because although Mourinho did similar stuffs compare to Allardyce/Megson (succeed in several clubs i assumed?), Mou did it at championship contender caliber teams, while Allardyce/Megson haven't, so we can't really compare them since Mou didn't really coached a small team before

i still think Mourinho will be our next manager, maybe he will be the next England manager first till 2014 WC, and take over at United when SAF finally retires

however, if its not Mourinho, I do agree that Moyes could be a suitable candidate as well (and he's Scottish lol? United's 2 greatest manager are Scottish)

titles, that's the difference. if you can consider porto as not a big team in europe, so it's reasonable to say he brought clubs to win champions league not just with a big club. and managing top club and smaller club is just different, from its pressure, ego of players etc. and before he succeeded at porto, he had success also with smaller club in portugal brought them to highest league position in that club's history, after resigned from his first job as manager in benfica.

mind to elaborate more why you don't like him?

well I do agree that Moyes is a great manager, but handling top class players with their ego and personalities are tricky case for unproven manager in top class level.

i don't "hate" him(as in hate towards some certain manager currently in PL)

i just don't like his approach to football.it's a win,but not pleasing to watch

his rm side is playing like tottenham right now,but that may be due to the excessive amount of talent in his possession(benzema, higuain, ozil,di maria,....not to mention some certain monster that was forged true and hard in OT)

Manchester United's Tomasz Kuszczak loaned to Watford

Watford have signed Manchester United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak on loan until the end of the season.

The Poland international, 29, has not featured for United this season, with David de Gea and Anders Lindergaard ahead of him in the pecking order.

His last appearance came in the 1-1 draw at Blackburn last May which secured a 12th Premier League title for the Old Trafford side.

He has played 61 times for United since arriving from West Brom in 2006.

The Baggies brought Kuszczak to England from German outfit Hertha Berlin seven and a half years ago and he amassed 35 games while at the Hawthorns.

He spent the early part of his United career as deputy to Edwin van der Sar and, despite the Dutchman's retirement at the end of last season, he has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular in Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

He is expected to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires in the summer.

The Pole will battle former England Under-21 shot-stopper Scott Loach, who has had to contend with criticism from Hornets supporters in the past, for the goalkeeping berth at Vicarage Road.

really kesian Kuszczak. he got displaced by Ben Amos, of all people. and because of that, his spot in the Poland national team is gone.

but oh well. all the best to him at Wolves. here's hoping he is given first team starts.

EDIT: eh Wolves pulak. Watford.

Rooney out of Ajax encounter

QUOTE
Wayne Rooney is out of Thursday's Europa League tie with Ajax due to a sore throat.

The striker did not train with the main group on Wednesday and will sit out the second leg after helping United gain a two-goal advantage last week. Dimitar Berbatov is fit enough to return, however, and will compete for Rooney's place in attack.

"Rooney's out for tomorrow," said Sir Alex. "He has a bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam last Thursday and he's been in bed for a lot of the weekend. He came in this morning for the first time. We're trying hard to get him ready for Sunday [at Norwich]."

Tom Cleverley is expected to play 90 minutes after being eased into his comeback in the first leg following his recovery from an ankle injury.

"Hopefully Tom will play a full game tomorrow," added Sir Alex at a press conference at Old Trafford. "He's back and it's good to have him back. He gives us more ammunition in the midfield area, which was an area some people were worried about. Anderson's back training with the first-team now as well."

The Reds will be taking nothing for granted despite the healthy lead from last Thursday's encounter.

"The experience we had against Basel, where we were 2-0 up at half-time, that's in our memories," added the boss. "I don't think we'll be casual or careless about what we're trying to achieve tomorrow but it's a good lead. You can't dispute that."

Hi guys,

I planned to visit Manchester and do the Old Trafford museum & stadium tour.
But then I realized the date I'm going is going to be derby day at the Etihad Stadium (Monday, 30 April).

Anyone got experience buying the match tickets & can advice me how to get it?

Much appreciated. Thank you

I went the day after Man Utd beat Wigan 5-0 (boxing day). I wanted to watch so badly but tickets were sold out.
My friend said it's easier to get tickets if you're a member of One United ? I think.
But you have to pay to get the membership, from there it's easier to get tickets.
Not too sure whether I'm right or not but hopefully other member's who watched before could clarify this doubt.
But if you were to buy on the spot, that's a 100% no, unless you get it from black market but the price could be soaring high.
Anyways, enjoy the Museum & Stadium Tour. It's awesome ! smile.gif

in order for you to buy league matches tickets, you need to be a member, so join their membership.
but in order for you to buy big match tickets, you need to have high loyalty points, for matches against smaller teams, yes you could.
but your chances of watching your selected game is near zero to me.

but maybe you can look out for carling cup games or other cup games, a lot easier to get tix.

first, nothing is certain like other had said
second, 4-4-2 has always been the core strategy for United under SAF reign

I hope a strong reaction after this loss. lost the battle won the war

our young defence will learn a lot this season.

De Gea's point blank save from the header had kept us in this tournament, if that went in we would have crash out considering how Ajax was swarming our half and we were sitting back (but lack the organization for holding the defensive stance)

QUOTE
Manchester United defender Phil Jones on Channel 5: "We got a good start from a nice finish by Chicharito but we weren't at our best tonight. We seemed to be in control of the game and we should have won it but maybe some complacency crept in. We'll review our performance tomorrow and take it from there.

QUOTE
Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson: "I'm responsible for picking the team and I just had too many young players in the back four out there tonight. That was just too much of a risk. Ajax are what they are - a fantastic team in terms of keeping possession of the ball. But we only had one shot on goal in the second half."

Start tgk dari minit ke13, miss hernandez goal.
First half was ok, but 2nd half was unacceptable.
Kalah kat tempat sendiri? Demn.
Lucky we advance to next round.

With cleverly not on form, park tak rajin midfield empty.
I hope we will bounce back against norwich.

heavy rain, missed 50% of the 2nd half.

we are very poor in 2nd half. SAF admitted the back 4 are too inexperience, but we get away with that.

forward unproductive, midfield are overran. disappointed with performance, but its job done.

Evra, Carrick, Rooney, and Giggs got a full rest. we are in good shape to face Norwich. shame Arsenal-Spurs kick off at the same time..

* PJS was struggling in CM, cleverley couldn't cope well with PJS in CM, lucky eriksen played poorly yesterday, lack of depth in midfielder went against us in second half since we're also outnumbered there
* Phil Jones in CB is still not promising, the defense reminded me of home game against Basel before, and yeah I still sense Evans Smalling will be our leading future of CB's pair
* DDG saved us from humiliation
* Poor defending on set-piece still continues

I don't see it was mostly because of the lack of experience, it was more of complacency. it shouldn't ever been there again after that humiliation knocked out of UCL, that gotta remind them that they're not any better than benfica and basel. at this point, I agree with what Keano said after UCL exit.

Hopefully the young lads can take lesson from that match, Norwich next, it will be a hard match to win in Norwich ground.

Disappointed with the performance last night. I don't see the hunger to close down opponents. Especially from Ashley Young, his defensive performance big difference compared to Antonio Valencia.
Overall poor display from the whole team.

Young was okay defensively, even though wasn't as good as first leg. contrary to what you said, what I thought is sometimes the lads didn't choose to close down wisely, it made them dragged away from the defence easily and left it too vulnerable, it was only getting better in CB dept when Evans came in, both Evans and Smalling have good composure. last 10 minutes was a chaos, midfield couldn't keep the shape. imo

Ji Sung Park is good in the middle, but don't expect him to provide the creativity/creating chances.he's more of a runner, thus he is better behind the striker

Phil Jones is a very good CB but he's still young and he needs to work on his anticipation and concentration. At this point in time, he's relying a lot on his physical abilities to compete which is good but CBs usually improve with experience and these games are good for his growth. He'll replace Rio in the next few years once he learns to remain focused the whole 90+ minutes and read the game better.

As for poor defending on set-pieces, Man Utd has always been weak in this area. Only Vidic is decent at defensive set pieces. We haven't really been up to par on defending set-pieces since the good old days of Daisy and Dolly.

defenders were not poor. immense pressure was loaded towards them due to midfield crashing. it was the midfield and wingers having a headless chicken night. even after scholes came in we couldn't swing the possession around because nobody looked like interested in making runs and making the space for passes. except for berbatov and chica. I think they both made a good attacking effort but lack of support. lets hope this does not continue in the future games.

arshavin is out from england

i wonder how a winger that has more creativity than Park and Kuyt combined are unable to secure first team football than the latter two(despite having competition for place as well)

because he didn't perform well. park still performs decent, kuyt still shows he's essential for Liverpool.
