You can use the old HDD but if has the OS in it previously, you will have to format it. If the programs in the old HDD is a standalone software that does not need to be installed, it will run but if it is a type that needs to be installed, it won't work. The registry values for the programs you've installed on the old HDD is not present in the new HDD. There is of course ways to make it work but a lot of work and a reinstall would probably be easier and less time consuming.

Got it, thanks you so much for explaining. So conclusion dont waste time and just reinstall. No shortcuts, lol.

I purchased the Seagate Barracuda 2TB and 3TB yesterday. And my Windows is installed into an SSD I got yesterday. SSD is awesome. The HDD is so far so good too.

You bought them despite the article I had linked reporting that the Seagate Barracuda XT 3 TB had a failure rate of 9.70% and the Seagate Barracuda XT 2 TB had a failure rate of 7.53%? You are a brave man but kudos for sticking to your favourite brand. While I have little doubt that the data in the article is good, it also isn't a world-wide representative nor does it account for changes over time.

I wish you luck. smile.gif

So that means I have to send it back all the way to Shah Alam ? Since I living at Serdang, any other nearer option for me to return my drive ?

And also, they will send me the RMA drive right ?

Argh, damn it. I merely glanced through that webpage then I went to the shop and the shop people told me they recommend Seagate more than WD so I took Seagate instead. I totally forgot about the data. doh.gif Let's hope I'm the lucky ones. rolleyes.gif
Actually I realise I have 1x 320GB Seagate Barracuda running in my comp. Previously, it was used in a file server running 24/7. Then after they defunct the server, I took it and used it on my comp again running 24/7. It has been running for quite a number of years now and still working very well. hmm.gif The current file server in my office runs on WD Black though. hmm.gif

I'm doubtful about Seagate. Their warranty is only 1 year, which I think is too short for a HDD. I may not like warranties but having a warranty this short doesn't sound like they are confident with their product. Then again, I don't like WD Green drives very much with their power saving features but has 2 year warranty so it can be very indecisive on which to choose since we only have 2 companies left in the world manufacturing HDDs. wink.gif

Seagate has better performance, usually recommended for those looking at performance numbers, sequential reads is much higher than WDC equivalent.
WDC on the other hand provide just a year more warranty than Seagate, making some choose it (I'm being one wink.gif ). Some said the WDC Green has higher failure rate, might be due to the fact it is not built for NAS and most people use it for their NAS, and thus... fail like there was no tomorrow.

We shall see when the WDC RED gets "more" reviews.
The RED edition has 3-year warranty, price will most probably sits between the RE4 (5-year) and Green series (2-year).

When I disabled the Windows setting for HDD power saving, my pair of three year old WD Greens complied without updating their original firmware.

If you don't mind transfer at 30MB/s or less to external HDD then you can go ahead with the external HDD (if your PC spec is in your sig).

im guessing depends on mobility if u just need the HD to be there take int, or if u always on the move.. try buying the ext one so u could bring them where u wan

HARD DISK
even though u didnt drop them.. if ure unlucky it just might be "broken" in just few month

btw im using a 1Tb WD HD as a backup of my pc files
(more like movies, pic and music) but todays file keep getting bigger and bigger in size..
Im gona run out of capacity in no time...

Get the cheaper version, but if you're afraid of reliable problem (warranty) then get the one with the longest warranty period.

you can use some courier to courier there, i think the price is less than RM15. Put as fragile.

like what @chiafoo state, please write down the RMA number, package your HDD in anti-static bag at least.

turn around time usually 3 weeks for me wink.gif
