hi all,

i guess i am far off the current hardware scene tongue.gif . or its just too many things for me to absorb...

anyway, got a few question to ask, recently i bought a 2.5" 1TB HDD... but I couldnt install it into my laptop because its too thick...

went back to ask the shop, they said there is no such thing as too thick etc etc, a lot of "ding-dongs" later, i got a free external cover for my HDD, went back home, and i found out i couldnt get it installed properly as well, now i am using it "naked"...

i attached the picture of the HDD with my current original one side by side. Left side is the factory setup HDD, right side is the one i just bought. clearly its thicker.

Attached Image

Question now,
1. it there any 1TB HDD that is suitable to be installed into my laptop? please recommend.
2. if i were to go to a computer shop to buy one, is there any info on the spec sheet that i should be aware of to make the correct purchase?
3. if there is no 1TB drives for my size, what is the largest capacity that i could have?

sellers here, please dont hesitate to give me a price quote, provived that you are 100% sure its the right thing for my laptop.

my laptop model is
Acer Aspire 4730Z
Currently its running on 250GB Hitachi HDD.

thanks guys, wink.gif

a thin one is using 1 platter while a thick one maybe using 2 or 3. right now there is only 1TB 3.5" using single platter, which means is for desktop. for 2.5" single platter is only 500GB at the moment. your notebook hdd bay only can fit a single platter 2.5" hdd.

By the way, has SSD development slowed down the capactive hard disk development? Because nowadays I don't see the hard disk sizes increasing so fast like time...

What, you're gonna use it for CCTV or something?
Here's another review:

Pros

Almost 200MB/s sequential transfer speeds
Very good performance in our HTPC benchmark
Improved power efficiency
Cons

Struggled with the read-intensive Gaming benchmark
Bottom Line

Overall, the new 3TB Barracuda moves in the right direction and certainly whets our appetite for upcoming higher capacity hard drives based on 1TB platters. It offers faster speeds than the prior version through most of our benchmarks and is many ways is the fastest 7200RPM 3TB 3.5" hard drive on the market. Couple that with the improved power profile and Seagate has a great option for those craving capacity and performance from a hard drive.

Just disable any "power-saving" features and the drive will run in 24/7 mode.
Problem solved. smile.gif

if your machine is running 24/7 and busy read/write to the HDD all the time then you don't have to worry about the "power-saving" being activated, its only activate when it's idle for more than a certain amount of time, normally from 5 to 10 minutes, it'll spin down to save power.
My 24/7 download server also has a WDC Green 1TB running for months now, and the operation is of course 24/7 read/write so it'll never spin down and the temperature is quite high compare to the Seagate 500GB running at 7,200rpm, higher by about 1~3 degree celcius.
