seagate 1tb (internal) selling for RM319 at jb pc fair. ok to buy? any seagate models that should be avoided/known to be problematic?

cant decide between internal or external. i just want to store movies only. thinking external better, cause can unplug when not using, rather than letting it spin 24/7. what say you guys?

Don't know about Seagate, but WD's 2.5 external quite durable.

1. For example, Buffalo Ministation Turbo 500GB / USB 3.0 / PCT, what is the meaning of PCT?

2. is USB 3.0 HDD compatible with 2.0?

3. This might sound stupid, I never try anything 3.0 on my laptop usb port, will USB 3.0 HDD be any faster or the same as a USB 2.0 HDD?

4. I see some people are selling casing for external HDD. I thought the casing comes together with it?

Thanks

1. what is the meaning of PCT?

No idea.

2. is USB 3.0 HDD compatible with 2.0?

Yes.

3. This might sound stupid, I never try anything 3.0 on my laptop usb port, will USB 3.0 HDD be any faster or the same as a USB 2.0 HDD?

There might be a tiny increase in a USB 2.0+USB 3.0, but it might be so small you won't feel it in practical usage. But you would see a difference in a USB 3.0+USB 3.0, definitely fast.

4. I see some people are selling casing for external HDD. I thought the casing comes together with it?

It is possible to buy internal HDDs and then later put them in external casings.

^ hi there, thank you for the replies. i never use an ext HDD before, it is just like thumbrive, plug and play right, no settings or installation required. also, is it possible to purchase anything smaller than 500 GB nowadays? my budget is somehere less than RM150 blush.gif

Ext HDDs are plug and play. And some will install additional software, like backup, maintenance and encryption. If you don't care for these extra software, you may remove them, but please be careful when you do so.

As for your budget, you could check out some of the price lists available online or try calling up some of the shops, including the small computer shops local to you, and ask if they carry ext HDDs for your budget.

If by "normal", you mean the previous low prices, it has been suggested that it will happen in 2013 or 2014.

If by "normal", you mean the price it probably would be by now if the flood didn't happen, it may be in 2015.

HDD price has dropped for a tiny little bit (RM 10~20) for the past few months, if this keep up we can expect great deal end of this year provided if we can wait for it xD" (my HDD space is slowly decrease despite my much lesser download behaviour, :sigh:)

Is there anyone using the Seagate 3TB yet? I would like to know about the operating temperature and the clicking noise (head parking) that was reported to be quite annoying at some forums (found on Google).
