I'm using seagate barracuda my average temp is 50C which is very hot for some people lol

Seagate bought Samsung's HDD division a while back, so Samsung HDDs are now handled by Seagate. From the other's RMA experience with Samsung hardware recently, Seagate will return you a Seagate HDD.

WD Green is safe for external storage use.

I also had problem with the drive before. It caused system hangs, slow transfer etc.... and after some Googling I found out that it had something to do with the head parking. But if we use it for external storage (with HDD enclosure), there wont be any such problem. I'm now using it with Vantec HDD enclosure without any issue for more than a year already. So, before anybody thinking of throwing the drive away you guys might reconsider my method

I'm using Vantec NexStar CX. Price is around RM70-ish.... USB 2.0 (that time USB 3.0 hasn't come out yet).

here to report that my Samsung F3 1TB HDD RMA was replaced with Seagate 7200.12, re certified...

Try reading the following guide to disable the WD Green's idle behaviour first before you buy an external casing.

My friend rma's his samsung external hard disk, and seagate returned a refurbished freeagent go flex to him.

The unit has a lot of scratches with chipped paint. Is this the normal services for Seagate? If it is then something is really wrong with their policy, they should be returning a new unit for the rma units if its unrepairable.

Oh nvm, just confirmed it is their policy that they will return refurbished units if u rma ur new units...In this case I'm really going to stay away from seagate...

Some company in Lowyat Plaza did offer file recovery services, but minimum fee is rm100
maximum can go up to rm10K.
Sometimes when the hdd doesn't get enough power supply it will also got click-click sound, try to change the USB cable or external casing and connect again.

High prices of HDD may drive many users back to Seagate.

WD's 808GB HDDs are not new, it has been a few years already, and are created from scavenged defective platters and targeted at Chinese customers, hence the unusual use of the 8s. That said, I have no idea if they are less reliable or not.

It's not all bad. The platters might be scavenged, but it could still last you 3 years so you've gained 300GB for free.

If ruggedness is more important than capacity, how about an SSD?

Then again, SSDs are wasted if put in external casings.

If buying external HDDs, 2.5" HDDs have better toughness than 3.5" HDDs, but treating them as fragile items is still strongly recommended. Other than that, I have no specific HDD recommendations.
