For Nikon, I'd recommend the D7000, 18-105 kit lens and a 50 f/1.8D prime lens. Might be slightly over budget.

For Canon, I'd suggest a 60D, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC and a 50 f/1.8 II

I think these 2 models should fit into your budget. Perhaps you might want to look into getting an external flash unit as well, especially if you're doing indoor events
