Flash to the latest firmware and dashboard. nod.gif

Added on October 17, 2012, 9:53 pmAnyway, OpenWRT is good, except of the 3G support is a bit choppy.

If your 3G dropped, a full power cycle is required to reconnect.

My MR3420 cannot survive with TP-link official firmware.
Official firmware throttle my speed to 0.1~0.01mbps speed
So I did some research and found the tutorial to flash openwrt on this website. I find it very Newbie Friendly, so I decided to share the link here.
http://www.kaskus.co.id/showthread.php?t=10124215

Don't forget to remove the %2A when download the openwrt firmware
http://www.4%2Ashared.com/file/LqtTaVCL/openwrt-mr3420-v1-squashfs-fac.html

Flashing openwrt require patient and time, configure can be tough for newbie. I manage to install miniupnp and setup DNS myself by googling for 1 days. I brick once my MR3420 once for wrong DNS configuration, but I manage to save back my router due to the very powerful failover function.

Openwrt is damn fast and powerful, allow 3G modem to successfully dial connection within 10sec. Damn love openwrt now, my speed damn so consistent all the time 10mbps++

Now I facing a problem is that my 3G modem will dc after idle sometime (few hour), it always dc when there is very less Active IP Connections. (DC when I didn't open any download) I always face dc problem when I put the connection to be on and idle overnight. Although I have set my auto-disconnect value to 0 or a very large value, the DC problem still occur when there is very less Active IP Connections and it idle for long time.  The auto-reconnect function in Openwrt is not working as what I expected

I saw something like this in my log, I notice there is auto-reconnect mechanism running but it is not successful. I click restart connection button on openwrt network interface webconfig page but it still fail to connect. I found that I have to manually restart the network interface (WAN) so that it only can successfuly reconnect. I use  ifdown wan0 ifup wan0 in SSH to let it restart the network interface.  Anyone have idea/script how to solve this?

Just set a cron job for the router to ping something every minute so that the connection wil not become idle.
It's under System > Scheduled Task.

Example command:
* * * * * /bin/ping -q -s 1 -c 60 8.8.8.8 & > /dev/null

That command will ping Google DNS 60 times every minute.

Thats weird, mayb the one you use is old version of Openwrt?
The one I am using can support E372 and MF680, I just get it from Kaskus forum tongue.gif
Beside the reconnect issue, openwrt is Very fast, stable and powerful.
Can install extra module like transmission torrent dl laugh.gif

Your DL is good enough, be contented smile.gif

Yagi wont help, on the other hand , you would be "rewarded" with some headache on how to fix the antenna and which direction to point it, least , it wont rip the modem's connector out , hence , handicapped your precious DC Modem icon_idea.gif

I got your PM.

When I first use OpenWRT, I use image from trunk. Trunk doesn't have web interface & I installed it manually (my choice is LuCI) but trunk currently down ( I don't know since when: http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/ ). It worked quite good & auto-reconnect after dc. Then I tried image from stable branch (named "Backfire": http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/10.03.1/ar71xx/ ) but it have a couple of bugs including failed to auto-reconnect after dc & some other bug I don't remember (these bugs probably got fixed or not with later/latest release).

Now I'm using beta branch named "Attitude Adjustment" ( http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adju...ar71xx/generic/ ) & works great. The auto-reconnect take around 20 seconds after dc.

For trunk image, I did explain how to flash & configure (install web interface, 3g, etc) over here:-
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=49464934

At the moment I recommend image from "Attitude Adjustment" branch. It have LuCI web interface by default.
  1. Make sure your MR3420 currently using official firmware.
  2. Download "openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3420-v1-squashfs-factory.bin" & flash to your MR3420 router/modem (make sure you're connected to MR3420 using network cable, not wireless).
  3. After successful flash, open http://192.168.1.1 . It will ask you to set the password.
  4. [Skipped part where I configure the MR3420 to be able to connect to internet for next steps.]
  5. In OpenWRT (LuCI) web interface ( http://192.168.1.1 ), go to System >> Software & click "Update lists" button.
If it failed to update, go to (System >> Software) Configuration & change the first line to this:-
    CODE
    #src/gz attitude_adjustment http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/packages
    src/gz attitude_adjustment http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09-beta/ar71xx/generic/packages

Then click "Update lists" button again.
  6. Then at "Status" section, click "Available packages" & install these packages:-
    • comgt
    • kmod-usb2
    • kmod-usb-ohci
    • kmod-usb-uhci
    • kmod-usb-serial
    • kmod-usb-serial-option
    • kmod-usb-serial-wwan
    • kmod-usb-acm
    • luci-proto-3g

Optional package if your device initially present as USB storage device (check in http://192.168.1.1 >> Status >> Kernel Log). Per-instruction from OpenWRT website:-
    QUOTE
    • modeswitching tools, if your modem initially presents itself as a storage device - one of the following, depending on your modem:
      • usb-modeswitch and usb-modeswitch-data (recommended) A mode switching tool for controlling "flip flop" (multiple device) USB gear.
      • sdparm - utility to send SCSI commands (needed on Ovation MC935D)

If you don't know whether you need or not, just install these packages too:-
    • usb-modeswitch
    • usb-modeswitch-data
  7. Go to Network >> Interfaces >> "Add new interface...":-
** Depend on the modem, the "Modem device" usually /dev/ttyACMx (e.g. /dev/ttyACM0 or /dev/ttyACM1) or also can be /dev/ttyUSBx
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
  8. Done.
The only reason I use OpenWRT is because with official firmware the connection speed is capped at 3G only even though the connection is HSDPA. With OpenWRT, this problem solved. I'm using Sony Ericsson K660i.

I have seen a 3G modem, can't remember which brand, got "fat" because of heat but my Sony Ericcson K660i phone works just fine without any fan cooling it & it running 24/7 since 4 years maybe. My MR3420 will be one year old this 30 October & also doesn't have fan cooling it either. Works well so far & doesn't hang even if I accidentally bumped it (I did knocked it with my fist because my phone suddenly off while playing BF3 smile.gif ). Also wireless N connection works ok for me, connected at 300 Mbps, no drop of connection at all & the coverage quiet good.

Limit? aiseh.... then need to buy some biggest cooling fan.
No need to install antenna.

Now im put the modem outsite the windows with extended USB cable...

BTW, where did you read the article about Yagi that limit the Dc network?
