2. Wait wait wait .... let me get this clear. Are you using a factory unlocked version of the 3Gs or a locked set (i.e. it requires ultrasn0w to enable you to use the simcard "around here"). If it is a locked set, forget what I said about using stock firmware, you need to download the stock firmware and create a custom firmware via redsn0w to preserve your baseband.
Yeah I believe it's locked set in the sense that...when I bought it brand new, the shopkeeper told me not to update (or turn off) because he had jailbroken the set to allow it to work with the simcard. I just remember jailbreak was a necessity for my phone, rather than a luxury.
And yeah, I've downloaded the .ipsw file for 5.0.1 and was just making that custom IPSW via redsn0w when it asked me "Will this custom IPSW be used on the newer (fixed) version of the iPhone 3GS?". I could check the serial number for that once I'm home (where the phone is) as directed by redsn0w, but I thought maybe iDetector is needed for this as well, because I've seen it mentioned around.
Oh, and the last part was just me wondering that...is this considered a jailbreak? Or am I just maintaining my baseband with all this? I don't know much about this, so I don't know what a jailbreak really is...thought you had to do a bunch of other stuff to your mobile to be considered jailbroken like install Cydia and so on.
