yah.. 1-2 days timeline since when?
since last time also said about a week, then suddenly a month, then a week again, now 1-2 days?
for me i better just keep waiting, when it announced, go ahead. tired of countdown already.

I'm talking about the Official iOS5.1 from Apple that is dropping in 1-2 days (that's what Modmyi suspects), not the jailbreak. The iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak I believe will drop AFTER 5.1 is released locking a lot of peeps who have not upgraded to 5.0.1 out (this is especially true for the iPad 2, for the iPhone 4, if you're still not on iOS 5.0.1, you'd better do it soon as in NOW.)

but still, the news (but i think its more called as rumors) about release of iOS 5.1 is already spread out since November last year,
since before 4S was launch in Malaysia. but seems like the date is extending until nowhere.
people is expecting iOS 5.1 to fix battery drain issue since long time ago, and make people wait and wait and wait.
every week there is news mentioning that 5.1 is releasing in nearest time but there is none.

That's true, just like the jailbreak news smile.gif

It's on 5.1 beta 3 (which was released 5 days ago and maybe the GM version will be out soon. Beta 3 has closed the corona exploit by the way so for sure once 5.1 is out, whatever pod2g is doing for the 5.0.1 will not work for 5.1 ....

Hey guys. I posted here before too about this, but finally just got the time to get my phone working. It's an iphone 3gs, which was unlocked to work around here and jailbroken to not sure what firmware. I hit "reset and erase all content" option on it and it refuses to get past the apple logo since.

Anyways, I just got time today for this, so I'll be fixing it in a while. Just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm almost done downloading the iOS 5.0.1 .ipsw file, and have installed redsn0w. I'll list out the things I'm unsure about below.

1) Do I need to use iDetector in order to determine whether my iphone 3GS has an old or new bootrom? I don't even know how that is significant, to be honest, and I wonder if I can test it at all given how my phone does not turn on. Does this relate to the "Will this IPSW be used on a newer (fixed) version of the iPhone 3GS?" alert that redsn0w gives; in which case I ought to depend upon the serial number of the iPhone 3gs to determine its week of production as guided?

2) My iphone does not get past the apple logo. To enter Pwned DFU mode, do I plug it in while it's stuck at that logo and then turn it off while plugged in, or can I just plug it in while turned off?

3) Once I have restored, I believe I should have updated to iOS 5.0.1 (and turned the phone on at last) while maintaining its baseband. Is this a jailbreak as well or simply an update? I don't see any mention of Cydia in all this, so I'm thinking my phone is not jailbroken with this?

1) No. The iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak via redsn0w is a fully untethered jailbreak so you will not need to know whether the 3Gs is an old bootrom or new. Since you are stuck in the Apple Loop (Lesson learned, don't do the Erase All Content and Reset Settings if your phone is jailbroken because the jailbreaking process moves some system files around thus causing the loop issue), you just need to put your 3Gs in DFU mode and restore the phone using stock firmware

2. Wait wait wait .... let me get this clear. Are you using a factory unlocked version of the 3Gs or a locked set (i.e. it requires ultrasn0w to enable you to use the simcard "around here"). If it is a locked set, forget what I said about using stock firmware, you need to download the stock firmware and create a custom firmware via redsn0w to preserve your baseband.

To enter PwnDFU mode, plug it in and try to turn it off (how do you do that if the phone is in the Apple Loop?), if not possible, just connect and try and put it in DFU mode (3 seconds power button, 10 seconds home button without releasing the power button, release power button and hold the home button for another 8-15 seconds or until you see resdn0w saying something like running jailbreak etc etc)

3) I don't understand?

Yeah I believe it's locked set in the sense that...when I bought it brand new, the shopkeeper told me not to update (or turn off) because he had jailbroken the set to allow it to work with the simcard. I just remember jailbreak was a necessity for my phone, rather than a luxury.

And yeah, I've downloaded the .ipsw file for 5.0.1 and was just making that custom IPSW via redsn0w when it asked me "Will this custom IPSW be used on the newer (fixed) version of the iPhone 3GS?". I could check the serial number for that once I'm home (where the phone is) as directed by redsn0w, but I thought maybe iDetector is needed for this as well, because I've seen it mentioned around.

Oh, and the last part was just me wondering that...is this considered a jailbreak? Or am I just maintaining my baseband with all this? I don't know much about this, so I don't know what a jailbreak really is...thought you had to do a bunch of other stuff to your mobile to be considered jailbroken like install Cydia and so on.

In your case, it is better to be safe than sorry. it's better to do a custom firmware set up and then do a stock firmware update and see how it goes as long as you got it running and you can check whether yours is a locked set or a factory unlock set.

If you do a custom firmware set up then it will jailbreak your phone and preserve the baseband which will allow you to unlock your phone so you get a jailbreak and get to unlock your phone

I usually set it as a new phone then jailbreak and then restore my backup.

Thanks cyian and Azraeil.

I followed Azraeil way, think that it would be nicer to have a clean phone to jailbreak than with my backups. Was afraid of doing this way in case it auto rewrites my previous back up with the new empty 5.0.1. lol
