wanna ask the pro's here, a 30mm or 50mm for macro on APS-C which is a better choice?? asking for a friend-girl she want to get one macro lens for her NEX but the only 2 macro with SAM is 30 and 50, her use is to shoot jewellery I think...

Well that depends on how close you want go. For the 30mm, getting too close would be producing unwanted shadows over your products where as the 50mm MFD might not be good enough for jewelries. But then again, you can use raynox or crop the images.

shadow if u have the light at the wrong place.

the kitlens zoom at 50 wth F5.6 and close mfd is good enough, if jewelry too small, u have whole 1Xmp to crop

+1! The shadow will only be visible if there is a lightsource behind the camera/photographer. An off camera flash at the correct area would do the job. A softbox helps a lot too!

I think the shadows will appear iiregardless of where the light comes from because the 30mm can go really close and you will most probably be shooting at about 1-2cm away from the jewellry to get enough magnification. Unless you plan to shoot further and crop, that works as well, but u may have a hard time finding a good angle.

Iers suggestion with the kit lens sounds good. After all, you can't possibly be shooting jewellry with a big aperture, the depth of field will be too thin.

Yuhi, off camera flash for NEX seems quite complicated if I'm not mistaken. hmm.gif

personally thinks the 16-50 ssm is kinda soft and less contrasty(maybe they shot without ND filter?)...and the SSS doesnt really works well *in that video*
-no offence-

yeah closeup filter works for kitlens...
but my experience...closeup filters don't works on my 55-200 SAM...
it become super soft at 90mm...and further focal length is not useable at all...
my closeup filter is Hoya closeup +5

Don't. Use raynox better if can afford. At least you still can maintain the IQ.

No comment about the lens. Need to play around with it first. But I don't think the contrast will be as good as the baby Zeiss

If you are not pixel peeing, or staring at a 7 ft picture up to your nose, then yes the IQ should be the same if not better.

Ooo, sorry, didn't know that you used a nex. Yup, raynox/closeup filters/extension tubes/bellows are the way to go! biggrin.gif
