sifus... need some assistance. i'm gonna join the dslr bandwagon this week & have roughly made-up my mind & will be getting d5100.. made my decision due to the quality of the pics (more vivid compared to 550d). the only thing i am still not very clear now is the absence of the af motor for nikon body. what will i be missing? the standard kit provided (AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR) has built-in autofocus motor, right? (silent wave motor). does this put this baby no  less better than 550d's autofocus system?  hmm.gif  hmm.gif
*
Nope, you don't loose anything with the kit lens 18-55. What you lose is D5100 is unable to auto focus with an old lens such as the 50mm f/1.8D (the nifty fifty). However, you can buy the newer 50mm which has SWM in it, D5100 no issue to auto focus with that lens.

meaning, the kit lens provided IS ABLE to do autofocusing due to the built-in autofocus motor (similar to canon's system), right? i will only rugi cuz i won't be able to use older lens without built-in motor, right?
*
Of course. You are able to use older lens (all Nikon lens uses f-mount), just that you need to manual focus.

Street price for 70-200 VRII is RM6,950 as per my last update last month.
*
Still RM6950? I remember can get about RM6800 already. Btw, I paid that price back at March 2010.

haha.. that AF-ON button? i hope it can be configured to assign other function(but cant!). really useless for me... never use it...half press is faster for me
*
Me too, I don't seem to use AF-On... well since I started from a D90... used to half press already. Only time I use it is when I need af-c and af-s together.

1. Set to AF-C,
2. shutter priority for shooting
3. use the shutter button to take photo

means if I'm shooting something moving and I need the AF, just need to hold AF-On... when I need to recompose, just AF-on until acquire af, let go then recompose and snap biggrin.gif

Its just the 18-200 FX version, no big deal. Don't expect great optics out of it as an all rounder.

Well, it depends on the acceptance level of a person. Some people even treat 18-200 as a sharp lens.

But then again, I remember reading factors limiting optics in a lens. 28-300 is covers a lot of focal length, and the design and all will sacrifice IQ.

Actually, there IS chances of sand, more like dust actually to get INTO the lens itself. That's why ppl have weather sealed lenses. There are small entry points from the front element however small it is.
*
My 70200 is weather sealed, but its full of particles lol.

generally yes. at least for canon lah haha

just switch the off and on button when recording , for telephoto the result is much significant  smile.gif
if you didnt mention what lens u used,
i also dono what lens is it  smile.gif

Its a 35 f/1.4G.

Btw, if its a cheap japan UV filter, I would ditch it. Why buy such good lens and use crappy filter which is make the quality worse? (or in some cases, bad)

Added on September 10, 2011, 10:12 amUnless of course if you consider Hoya HD as 'cheap japan UV filter' then its different story tongue.gif

My guess is it could've went in when you were changing lenses and just drop the lens into your bag/pouch. The lens cap is not weather sealed ma.
*
Particle is on the front element, not at the rear element. Beside rear element doesn't move during focusing, its those in the middle. Particle were coming from inside itself, prone to happen to zoom lens. Friend's 70200 IS also have this.

Hmm I don't know. I've been to Nikon center at BTS and the rubber seal of the 18-105 has came off. I am a bit skeptical about it. Anyway thanks for the recommendation. Do you think of any nice primes for a good combo?
*
I think you are referring to the rubber on the zoom ring? Its normal, especially its a demo unit where customers try out every day.

Yes. Hmm I'm just afraid that if camera got molested often the rubber might come off but is it covered under warranty?
*
Not covered under warranty, my D90 also got peel off sad.gif

QUOTE(lwliam @ Sep 10 2011, 08:18 PM)
The rubber is considered wear and tear so won't be covered under warranty. Don't touch the rubber with oily hands, and it will last very long. Oil causes rubber/plastic to expand.
*
Never noticed this before, thanks for the tip!

Wow... Pocket Wizard's Flash Trigger so expensive... I'm still noob on this, anyone care to enlighten more about flash trigger?
*
It is TTL + radio which is why it is pricey, another brand is similar is the Radiopopper but it doesn't come to Malaysia as it violates certain law (radio signal thingy).

SU800 have TTL, but its optical (IR), and most other cheap triggers are radio trigger but no TTL (full manual on flash).

Phottix's Pocket Wizard Compatible Trigger <-- what does this mean actually? Pocket Wizard is a product by its own?

Celcuiz, are you using any trigger? smile.gif
*
Err, PW has a series where by 1 unit is a transmitter/receiver by itself. Meaning if you have 3 units, and your friends have 2 more units you can borrow and have a 1+4 combination. I think the Phottix is compatible with them I guess, I don't have actual experience with this.

I am using Phottix Stratos, radio trigger without TTL.

QUOTE(Everdying @ Sep 12 2011, 12:51 PM)
really violate?
i thought it was just that radiopopper will only sell to customers in north america.
but there are ppl here using radiopoppers...i saw one a couple months ago tongue.gif

Added on September 12, 2011, 12:55 pm

budget choice, phottix aster around rm220.
*
Yeah, those are imported in. Its actually illegal to use it here, the only reason why RP don't sell it outside is because of the radio frequency rules.

QUOTE(FaezFarhan @ Sep 12 2011, 01:04 PM)
I used my housemate's D7000 during my cousin's engagement. Pair it with my 35mm f1.8. It's awesome! The white balance is for more accurate IMO. It's abit sharper as well. The D700 is definitely better in terms of overall performance compared to the D7000 right? Even though it's a bit older.
*
Different class, DX vs FX. Although D7000 is newer generation, but the D700 is still a FX sensor.
