HTC Desire S Guide for Newcomers to Android:
This guide will guide you throughout your Desire S phone. What's the best app to use it on your phone, some tweaks and more!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097538

How To: Check if your phone is S-OFF or S-ON and your HBOOT version
1. Disable Fast Boot. (Setting > Power > uncheck Fast Boot)
2. Turn off your phone.
3. Turn on your phone by pressing the power button and volume down button together.
4. You will see a white screen with "S-OFF" or "S-ON" and your hboot version on top of the screen.
NOTE: If your phone is S-ON, you won't be able to root or flash custom ROMs to your phone. To make it S-OFF, follow the guide below.

How To: S-Off your device with Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool
Unrevoked and Alpharev present: Revolutionary Tool
Please also read the documentation page for this tool: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
Does Revolutionary give me root? No. You will need to flash this zipfile from recovery.
NOTE: For HBOOT 0.98.0002, please use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194488. Thanks to slvrbllt
S-OFF your phone using Ubuntu:
1. Download Ubuntu 11.04 from the Ubuntu site.
2. Burn image onto DVD/CD or create a USB Stick (I suggest creating USB stick since it loads faster, for me). (Follow instructions provided at the website to create a bootable CD or a USB Stick).
3. Reboot computer. Allow Bootup popup menu (usually F8?).
4. Select DVD/CD-drive or USB Stick to boot Ubuntu.
5. Wait a bit for things to load. Choose "Try Ubuntu".
6. Now, Ubuntu should load up successfully. (see screenshot)
7. Connect phone to your computer and make sure that Debugging Mode is enabled on your phone. Download the tool from http://revolutionary.io/ for Linux (Firefox included with Ubuntu). Keep that browser window open.
8. Extract the downloaded file and put it into the root directory (in Ubuntu, that's Ubuntu/Ubuntu, if I recall correctly).
9. Search for the Terminal (Windows key pops up the search, I think; otherwise, it's the icon on the top left corner of your screen), run Terminal.
10. Type in "sudo ./revolutionary" at Terminal.
11. It'll provide a key. Go back to the browser window where you downloaded Revolutionary tool - there's a form to fill out. Type in the key. It'll generate a second key. Type that key into the Terminal.
12. Make sure it says that everything is successful. It'll ask if you want to flash Clockwork. Type in "Y".
13. Once it shows success, reboot phone.

S-OFF your phone using Windows:

1. Download Revolutionary tool for Windows from http://revolutionary.io/ (Keep the browser open)
2. Extract the zip file to a new folder.
3. Connect phone to your computer and make sure that Debugging Mode is enabled on your phone.
4. Open the new folder and right click on "revolutionary.exe" and select run as administrator.
5. Follow steps from Step 11 above.
WARNING: S-OFF your device will void your phone's warranty. You will need to turn it back to S-ON for warranty. (I don't have a guide to make it back to S-ON right now, so do it as you wish).
S-OFF Video Below:

How to: Root your device
1. You can achieve root by using Gingerbreak. Follow this link and guide below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
2. Or, you can flash this zipfile from recovery (Source: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary).
(You can skip this if you're about to flash a custom ROM since custom ROM are pre-rooted. Unless you want to keep your original ROM, use this to root your device.)

Custom ROMS:
Virtuous Unity Sense 3.0 based on Pyramid
SAGA LBC MOD (Sense 2.1+3.0/OC/UV/FAST/STABLE
CoreDroid Desire S GB 2.3.3 |SENSE|STABLE & FAST|MDJ Kernel|ONLINE
CyanogenMOD 7.1 from Inc-S
MIUI ROM
BeatMod FlyerSense
(Most of these ROMs are pre-rooted which means you don't need to root your phone. It's already rooted once you flash these ROMs.)

How To: Flash Custom ROMs using Recovery (Method 1)
(You can use your default recovery from Alpharevx but I recommend using 4EXTRecovery)
1. Copy your custom ROM "zip" file to your SD card (Root directory).
2. Turn off your phone.
3. Turn on your phone by holding the power button and the volume down button together.
4. Once you see the white screen, choose "Recovery"
5. Make a full wipe/format and clear all cache.
6. Choose "install from sdcard/zip file" and then choose your Custom ROM zip file from your SD card to flash your Custom ROM.

How To: Flash Custom ROMs using ROM Manager (Method 2)
(This method might be easier for flashing ROM updates or add-ons)
1. Go to ROM Manager (You can install this software from the Android Market.)
2. If you want to use 4EXTRecovery, please follow steps below, and if you're not using 4EXTRecovery, please skip to step 6)
3. Press your phone's option's button and choose Manual Flash Override.
4. Press OK and choose your phone model.
5. Choose ClockworkMod 3.x (After these steps, your ROM Manager won't ask you to flash new recovery again when flashing new a ROM)
6. Reboot into Recovery and make a full wipe/format and clear all cache then reboot.
7. Now, from your ROM Manager, choose Install ROM from SD Card.
Note: Flashing ROMs can be vary, some custom ROMs may require you to flash some of their own file first. Eg, The LBC Mod ROM requires you to flash "WIPE zip file" before flashing the ROM. Read their instructions to know better.

NOTE: I am not responsible for any faulty or bricked devices after S-OFF or flashing new ROMs. Do it at your own risk.

Video Flashing Custom ROM below:

How to: Flash Radios
1. Download your Radio zip package.
2. Copy your Radio zip package to your SDcard root directory and rename it to PG88IMG.zip.
3. Turn off your phone and turn it back on by pressing volume down and power button together (You need to turn off fastboot under phone settings > power options).
4. Once you're in hboot, the bootloader will ask you if you want to install radio.img.
5. Press confirm and reboot your device.
Note: You must delete your Radio zip package or rename it to something else when booting your phone after flashing new radio image since the bootloader will always try to flash if a PG88IMG.zip file is on your SDcard.

Where to buy?
From Maxis: http://www.maxis.com.my/personal/android/A..._WhereToBuy.asp
Market Price for AP set should be around RM1300 or less and RM1600+ for original if you don't want to get it from Maxis. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Based on current price date at 10, July 2011.

FAQs:
1. What's S-OFF and S-ON?
- If your phone is S-ON, you won't be able to root or flash custom ROMs to your phone. S-OFF let's you to have full control of your phone.
(NOTE: S-OFF is not ROOT, S-OFF your device does not mean that your device is Rooted. They are totally two different things.)

2. How can I backup all my apps and apps' data files before flashing a new ROM and wiping all my datas?
- You will need to root your device first using Gingerbreak(see above). And then, install Titanium Backup and use that to backup all your apps and your apps' data files.

3. I have WiFi death grip/Wifi signal drops when I hold my phone in certain ways.
- There are no 100% right fixes yet for this issue but give it a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175646

4. Is it possible to install 4EXTRecovery/Flashing ROMs/ROOT on Desire S with S-ON?
- No, it is not possible. You must/need "S-OFF" to customize your device.

5. I've just received this system update OTA - 1.47.61.1 or later. If I install it, will I loose my S-OFF and root?
- Yes, you will lose both S-OFF and root once you update because it will update the hboot to 0.98.0002. However, you can try following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...608&postcount=5 to update the OTA but not the hboot. Check this one out also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190992 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194488 to S-OFF and root if you have updated the OTA.

Final Notes:

Can't find the right guide? Request it here. Any Problems or Questions? Ask around this thread. But please read the FAQ first before asking, it usually helps.
I also want to say thanks to those people who contributed to this thread. Enjoy your phone! wink.gif Guide ported from XDA, it may contain errors on this thread, check out my official thread on XDA for more.

WARNING: Please follow those steps carefully, it usually works if you do it properly. However, I am not responsible for any faulty or bricked devices. Do it at your own risk.

S-ON means that it is locked by HTC and you can't root your phone or install custom ROM into your phone, basically you're stuck with their stock ROM and not able to root it at all.

You can only make video calls through using apps...

You can always check the warranty card, sticker on phone... It all say BrightStar or not... if not then it's an AP sets... If still scare you can call HTC to check the imei number...
*
QUOTE(benny888 @ Apr 29 2011, 10:00 AM)
I am very familiar with buying AP and original - has been buying such stuffs for past 15 years. Buying AP as I say buy from a reputable shop ; even in KL eg LowYat there are many shops selling AP - my advise is always first ask the company supporting it. If the seller is honest they will show you the AP warranty card, which for all good purposes be a Msian registered company.
*
I live near BB, so might get my DS from Lowyat, but not sure either an Ori or an AP.
For Ori, does it sound proper for me to get the IMEI number from dealer and call BrightStar on spot (during weekend) to check the warranty card before paying?
For AP, what does it mean by "AP warranty card"? The warranty card issued on the name of the dealer? Sounds as if the card will be void if the shop suddenly closes down.

QUOTE(exkay @ Apr 16 2011, 04:32 PM)
Well, I've both a Maxis and Digi line. Let's just say no matter how cheap digi could offer a phone, I shall not go near it. What's the point of having a good phone but lousy coverage ?
*
QUOTE(cyapd @ Jun 12 2011, 01:06 PM)
for myself,i just press home button cos im having unlimited data plan (no capping tongue.gif)
*
QUOTE(cyapd @ Jun 13 2011, 12:10 PM)
i do surf A LOT due to the entitlement of unlimited data usage drool.gif (i left apple cos of that)
*
Currently in a trade-off between data usage and network coverage.
I'm a Hotlink prepaid user with call and SMS controlled below RM20/month. In future, my data usage will be up to 1GB/month.

Here comes the divergence:
Maxis plan with phone (RM30 + RM78) and with risk of extra charge w/o notification. Phone at RM1309 (assuming 1-yr contract). LESS BUDGET-FRIENDLY.
Digi plan w/o phone (RM68 + RM20), with unlimited network access. Phone at RM1700 (or AP around RM1350). MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT BE 24/7.

Between the risk of horrifying additional charge (proven by some Maxis users) and the risk of poor coverage (claimed by some Digi users), which option should I go for? Is Digi service really that poor?

It means the battery needs time for 'orientation'?

QUOTE(foxstertail @ Jun 16 2011, 02:11 PM)
thanks ruffstuff. reboot my device and it works. but sometimes the mobile data switcher does not function properly. it keeps turning on my mobile data even though i have toggled it off. hope there's a fix coming. aishh.
*
I wonder that also. Any solution to make the switcher totally manual?

DIGI service is moderate, you can notice that 3G is disable on most places even at MidValley, it's not using 3G for data. But for some places it is working well. Depends on your preferences.

Regarding the battery, it can last me for 2 days for normal usage. When I first bought it, I full charged it and use it all until the phone shut down itself and then fully charged it again. Repeated it for 2-3 days.

The mobile data does not turn back on on me after restarts. I don't know whats the problem but you can try flashing a custom ROM.

Hope this helps.

You can try "Tango" or "skype" which is available for both iPhone and android, download from the Market.

WTF... been away for a couple of days suddenly now can S-Off?? laugh.gif Will try at home later. thumbup.gif

Also it seems that HTC is almost done with their official bootloader unlocking for Evo 3D and Sensation. Desire S will get it much later based on this sentence on facebook.

"We'll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments."

as far as I know, rooting won't brick your device, if rooting fails you can always try to root your phone again.

Custom ROM tweaks the original ROM and add in more functions like, making the wifi better, able to overclock the CPU(you can do this by rooting also), and much more... read their features on their forum, you can find the links at first page. I recommend using Virtuous Unity 1.27.0 Sense 3.0 based on Pyramid... which is a quite stable ROM... read their forum to know more...

jenwww, this ROM can go to 1.7 GHZ but not very stable..... you can read more on their official forum.

I've got some questions.
Basically I've flashed the virtuous unity rom on my DS.
But I also like the lock screen animation on the LBC rom. How can I put that on my DS?

Another thing, there's this widget I really like from the stock - notepad by HTC
Can't seem to download that here. Anyway I can install this too?

Lastly, how do I get this on the virtuous unity rom?

Disable Fast Boot in Power settings first then try again.

I'm currently trying out Virtuous Unity 1.27.0.

Some minor glitches because it's resized from qHD to WVGA.

Don't really fancy the carousel actually and now the wallpaper is just 800x480 instead 800x960.

Some new options & widgets and updated apps.

Overall very nice if a bit heavy.

Disable Fast Boot in Power settings first then try again.

I'm currently trying out Virtuous Unity 1.27.0.

Some minor glitches because it's resized from qHD to WVGA.

Virtuous Unity is really nice.

Flash this in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...7&postcount=108

Lovely.
What's CRT by the way?

Has anyone suggested that the calculator is really out of size? Lol.

In the end i'm using Saga LBC Mod. I guess i still prefer 2.1 home screen. Some tweaks already built in like the CRT effects and circular battery indicator with percentage.

hey man, are you using LBC v0.5.3? In terms of performance, which u prefer? Virtous or LBC? and how's the wifi fix man, does the wifi getting better on LBC? Give us some reviews on both ROMs man, thanks wink.gif

I haven't apply the wifi fix. Or is it built in into the ROM?

I prefer LBC since i still like 2.1 homescreen. But i read that LBC will have 3.0 homescreen later. I just hope that it's optional. Still not ready for other launchers.

I think LBC is snappier since it's based on DS ROM instead of Virtuous which is based on Sensation ROM.

IMO it feels quite slow even though Quadrant reports around 2K with 1.2GHz default kernel OC. With LBC i get around 1800 in Quadrant which makes sense because it's not OCed.

Stock ROM can only get around 1300. sweat.gif

Maybe need to give them some time to optimize it and resize everything properly. Some things still looks weird to me. The built in screenshot function is useful though.

Added some screenies. biggrin.gif

This LBC ROM is based on Telstra ROM which is Australian but the guy making the ROM is German so i find it to be a bit weird.

But almost everything runs perfectly, even GPS. Kinda don't make sense that Euro ROM can't detect satellite in our area.

you will need to flash custom ROM... if you want fully sense 3.0 u can try virtous utility... if u want half 3.0 and half 2.1, try LBC mod... I personally recommend LBC mod.. cuz it's stable and fast.

nope, it won't.. factory reset just removes all your files and programs.

p.s. Updated new guide for flashing ROMs and new custom ROMs added to first page.

S-ON means that it is locked by HTC and you can't root your phone or install custom ROM into your phone, basically you're stuck with their stock ROM and not able to root it at all.

You can only make video calls through using apps...
*
Sori.. I'm still not clear regarding video call from Desire S? Can I make video call to.. let say Nokia E71... from Desire S or vice versa?

Thanks for the info smile.gif

With the HTCsense tracker, i deleted my account from the pc and phone, then made a new account... seems to work now. Been at it all day! But the crappy thing is that u can't trace the phone if it's turned off. Which doesnt help, cuz people usually turn the phone off..

I don't think the delay-sms-thing is related to Desire S... Most likely it came from the network... Try contacting your telco provider...

I am planning to get a HTC Desire S. I would like to know, a few things.

1. Can I make a backup of my phone without rooting it? Backup as like in Windows doing an image type of backup? Which program do I need to install?
2. If I do a hard reset, will it come back to the day I bought my phone back from the shop? (I am not planning to root my phone)

@suggiebliss the phone is less than 2 months before it died on me. I really love this phone sad.gif

@jenn I can't even perform hard reset on it. I brought it to digital mall hoping that they can at least help, but was told I need to bring it to the service center since it's still under warranty..planning to go tomorrow to brightstar and I really hope that they can settle it quick. Wishful thinking on my part, but still..

Hi All, wanted to ask sumthing about this phone. is it true the HTC DS data keep on running even if we disable the mobile network setting? Last week my data usage went out to almost rm2k!im using celcom exec 50(no data plan). i've install the 3G watchdog apps on my DS...the 3g usage very little..but celcom bill charge me like crazy! when i ask the lady @ celcom centre she told me " the data for this HTC model memang keep on running even if you disable everything " . is it true? if yes. is there any solution for this? im new in this smartphone thingy. pls help me. sad.gif ...

note: most of the apps i install using wifi network and tru apk. file on pc download.

when i ask other ppl:
some say the free apps is not giving the right count. apps tipu.
some say apps eat data alot when running it.(without internet access.can meh?)
some say some apps use alot of data when download and install tru market.(mobile network or free wifi also charge)auto charge data.huh?
some say celcom suka hati charge me in the bill..then they will waive everythig..give me the fix an reasoable price for it.
some say tukar hp lain laa...

no extra data charges on DS. Watchdog is promising. I don't really know how you use it, this is weird

go to

\settings\privacy\

uncheck back up my settings.

This would always synch with the Google cloud service to backup your settings.

do check the watchdog again.

my Desire S is alive again! brought it to SIS (plaza berjaya) on monday, they said the turnaround time is 3 days. but today (tuesday), they sms-ed me saying that it's ready to be collected.

they changed the motherboard on my Desire S. so happy that it only took them a day to fix it biggrin.gif

nice man, btw, did you ask about the Wifi death grip? would they fix it too?

Hi Sifus,

My desire s here got problem. Cannot start the phone even after i have factory reset it through phone button.

Anyone here have any idea on other ways to start it? My last option is to send it to the AP dealer for warranty already.

have you try to take out the battery and try to hard reset ??

Added on August 11, 2011, 6:04 pmwhy so many people have dead desire s . got anything weird happened before your phone dead? hmm.gif

like phone extremely hot? using task killer? too much background services? memory full?? you let your phone battery drain until empty before?

phone cant turn on happened to me once but i took out the battery and put back on then the phone can be started but the startup takes about 5 minutes after that my phone just back to normal on the next reboot. i had no idea what i did before that happened to me i think i open some apps without closing it then i put into pocket and let the screen lock .

fyi my phone never completely sleep before . my light sensor on all the time for me using sensor unlock screen app.

to those had this problem mind to tell me anything odd happened before your DS dead? or cant be turn on before take out the battery and reset/on the phone . unsure.gif

Mine here is AP too, I guess it's cheaper. You can only get it from Maxis at the moment. Some might be selling the ori set, but u have to find it yourself.

Regrading phone cant be start problem, I guess you better go for the warranty. My phone is great and running without any problems, I guess maybe u got a faulty unit.

Anyhow, I would suggest u guys to update your phone and then make a factory reset. Clear all files and start it like a new phone. I thinks it is more stable that way.

I'm so fed up with the gps of this phone! If i disable the location determined by Wifi/mobile network option,

solely dependent on the gps satellites signal to determine my location, it seems to take forever to detect my location!

Should go to the htc customer care centre to fix it? or is it the problem everyone encounters with this phone??? =(

Mine is singapore SiS set. same here... when using wifi/2g/3g it will detect

my location instantly. i think it has both GPS and A-GPS. I have tried using

GPS Status app and i still got the result of my gps status without any

connection regardless of wifi/data network but it took like 10-15 minute to

show the result. After that, i tested with Sygic Navigator

and thank god it worked! What i did was.... i went outdoor and took off

the cover. And then later i tried again using Sygic Navigator, sadly, it failed

to detect my location again. =( How come? no idea.

You can buy it directly from maxis without contract or looking at LYN garage sales... I prefer garage sales since you will get some discount while @ maxis you stuck with old RRP...

Ori set's will have Brightstar sticker and not SiS sticker...

A-gps is assist gps . that use your network on wifi or 3g/2g to send ur details to the server then the server send back the location to you . i think all phone have this . cause if using gps itself the detection is kinda slow here but you still able to connect . but my phone cant even connect the sat at all

My GPS can lock. But when no WiFi, useless already the google map and GPS. Use Google Maps 5.8.0 ownhere. Phone is not rooted.

Papago not useful. Dangerous. For while tell me to turn right, tell me to turn left.

Hydrogen feels faster i think. Maybe because of the lightweight launcher.

Tried Zulugen for a short while. It uses either Launcher Pro or ADW by default.

Guys, after 4 months having this phone..my first big hiccup & i think the worst happened.
My phone freezes and shuts down by itself. it started after i clicked ' update all' and it stuck at this IBeer FREE update at 64%, and thats it.
The phone never boots after that... tried to to do the recovery ( press volume down + power button) went to the menu, and chose 'recovery, it restarts, vibrates 7 times and black screen!....

i think i took out the battery more than 10 times to on it back. now it stuck at the HTC logo. cry.gif

my phone is still under warranty, do i send to HTC or try to 'root' / reinstall the OS myself? icon_question.gif

Tiamat 1.1.2 with MIUI 1.9.2. Battery drain is normal. Can underclock to 192MHz and OC to 2GHz if you dare. ohmy.gif It supports volt changing too.

Yea i don't OC myself. Just underclock and undervolt a bit. But doesn't seem to give much effect.

MIUI is pretty and has useful built in apps. No app drawer so you have to put them in folders.

I like CM7 for the CM settings. MIUI don't have that.

Just try both. See what you like and maybe stick with it. tongue.gif

Why not consider getting those 5000mAh portable charger... at least it will work with several of your device... Sanyo Eneloop kinda good option...

TS is here wink.gif

btw, if u want to get a new sdcard, get the one with higher class... better read and write speed.

p.s. I'm using virtuous unity ROM now, and it's fast and awesome, just some tiny bugs haven't fix yet. Might wanna try MIUI ROM someday too, but it's too iphone like to me.. and it';s not completely stable yet.

Welcome New Desire S user!!!, we need more people here to make this active, I see too few Desire S users in here... It's a great phone, should recommended to anyone out there!

MIUI quite nice. Have some unique apps built in and everything is coated nicely with their unique style and sorting. And you can still use widgets unlike iOS. tongue.gif

Hm SD Tools seems a bit dodgy and the file size is too small to test.

So i tried SD Card Tester. Seems more consistent and i can choose the file size to test.

Compared to the stock Sandisk 8GB Class 4, the Patriot 16GB Class 10 writes almost twice as fast. Read is only slightly faster.

To hard reset your phone, you need to press "Volume up" + "Volume down" + "power button".

To boot up your device to hboot, you press "Volume down" + "power button" while you phone is shutted down. (You need to untick fastboot in settings and then shut down your phone)

So, don't get confused... hope this helps.

Don't pull out battery if you can. Might fry the eMMC chip and brick your phone.

Use the power + vol up down instead.

If you still love Sense, better stick with Sense based ROM. Lots of choices from 2.1, 3.0 & 3.5. Otherwise you can try CM based ROMs or MIUI.

hi all.
im about to try to root a desire s
so need some info

1. if i follow guide from page one. no problem should happen rite?
2. in case i want to sent to warranty, can i back to ori setting ?

tq

gmail is part of android . you need it for android market . for the sync problem you can set manual sync so it wont sync your email to your phone

Added video tutorial on first page, thanks.

Glad to see more Desire S users, I'm currently using Virtuous ROM, which is a great ROM and stable.

MIUI ROM is still buggy as far as I know, you might need to sacrifice some functions. However, you can still try it, it is still quite stable.

CynogenMOD got its official support, you guys might want to try that awesome ROM.

Any more questions please ask, thanks...

I am still using HTC Desire S stock rom. No update yet

Haiz... lost my original HTC USB to Phone cable. Need to buy back. Just now went to normal phone shop, try the data cable , not so compatible with the phone, ( was testing with the belkin car charger) , once plug in to the phone, the whole phone like hang, cannot go any apps, then the shop owner use his GalaxyS2 cable with same car charger, the phone works fine)...Time to look for original car charger and USB data cable

stock kernel from MIUI. i just flash the rom, never did anything with the kernel coz i dont know how.

i think the problem might be my proximity sensor.
all calls from stock rom, miui rom, cm7 rom got problem.
after each call the screen will be blank and power button cannot be use.
i need to wait for a while. in CM7 in to plug in the USB cable , then the screen is on again.

Hi there, all Desire S lovers!

I have one very stupid question. I myself consider it stupid...not sure about you guys.

What is the quality of the front camera on the HTC Desire S? Some review websites say that it is 1.3MP, while others rate it as only 0.3MP.

So which is which?

Thanks for all your help, guys!

There are only two authorised distributors for HTC devices.
1. SiS Distribution (M) Sdn. Bhd.
2. Brightstar (M) Sdn. Bhd.

SME (Samsung Malaysia Electronics) do not distribute HTC products. Even if they do, they are considered as UNAUTHORISED distributors. When you wanna send in your phone for warranty claim, HTC Care/SiS Dist. will not entertain you.

Please take note, my friend...

Some people maybe got some quality issues. And some maybe have eMMC fried chip issue after pulling battery. Seems to mostly affect those with Samsung chip. People with Sandisk chip like me seems luckier. Wifi signal go down if you cover your hand at the top back. That seems to affect everyone but it's not really a big deal.

Hi,

I got a maxis set (brightstar) want to sell, do I need to prepare the ownership transfer? I tot maxis one is SiS, but just find out is brightstar set.

:-)

Btw, compare Desire S with my SGS2. Pros of Desire S are:
- with LED indicator
- feel more solid
- Wifi better (this one not so sure, but I compare SGS2 vs Desire HD, Desire win tongue.gif)

A few days back I bought a second hand Desire S (not really second hand, cuz never used before) from a forummer here. The set is also a Maxis set distributed by Brightstar.

I registered with SiS (Online Warranty Registration) yesterday and everything seems ok. If I am not mistaken, the extra 1 year warranty period applies to Brightstar units as well. You just have to register online.

As for Brightstar ownership transfer, I don't think this is necessary cuz only SiS sets require the ownership transfer.

Any pros here? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you.

i don't know if ownership transfer is required.

brightstar set automatically has 2 year warranty without the need of online warranty distribution.

However, keep in mind that brighstar set is to be serviced by SIS service center.

Perhaps this will help:
Attached Image

I bought it from Maxis as well and it's distributed by Brightstar. After I got the phone, I registered online via SiS Online Product Warranty Registration page - https://www.sis.com.my/siswarranty/

Received the confirmation email after I've sent them my proof of purchase. So, it should confirm that Maxis Set comes with 24 months warranty.

Custom ROM usually outperform the stock ROM, I used Virtuous ROM before and it was worth it. But now I'm using hyperion ROM, which is good also.

You DO NOT need to root your device to install custom ROM, no gingerbreak and anything..... "All you need is S-OFF"...

After S-OFF, you get to install custom ROM, and custom ROM is pre-root. Means, after flashing a custom ROM, your phone will be rooted.

Just follow my guide on first page man.

I have a question.

How do we have our recorded videos in a smaller file size? Cuz its just way too big for a 1 min video. I tried to email a 1.5 min video and its way too big, like 42MB. I tried some compression softwares but its still not doing it. I use to use my sony cybershot phone , took like 10 min videos and i could still email the video. But this HTC file size is just not cool!

Help anyone?

Hi, i tried resolutions high (640 × 480) and low (320 × 240) the file size is still very big for a really short video. What resolutions do you use?
And is it possible to save videos as MP4 instead of the default 3GP?

er i try to record some video. all 10 second video.

high setting: 8mb
medium setting: 4mb
low setting: 800kb (quality too worst)

the con's of cyanogenmod rom is it is not as eye candy as sense rom.
it's look like pure android like in nexus phone.
also use low resource though hence battery can last longer.

it's not that dangerous actually, but it still can brick your phone by a little chance. smile.gif

i use handbrake also to compress my anime. laugh.gif

i notice after a while that my phone is eating the ram resource.
im using MIUI rom tho, can use app killer to free some space for my ram.
but still, after 2days use, the phone become laggy. then use app killer, recovered 100++Mb memory, 100mb memory available. sometimes, 50mb memory available. to unlock the phone also take 1-2second delay...
evertime i need to reboot the phone.

Look for V6 Supercharger script in XDA. You can tweak your free memory settings with it. Should have no more lag after that.

build quality desire S better. aluminum housing with gorilla glass

performance wise, both are same although W has more processing power

i reason why i choose desire S over galaxy W because i tends to drop my phone.

and now people are going for 4 or 4.2". but 3.7 is more practical.

dont worry. SIS is only a distributor in malaysia. desire S is quite popular in other country like hong kong

about ICS update - if desire HD and incredible S able to upgrade to it ICS, desire S will be no exception as well ( cause all having same hardware spec mar, using same proc and ram)

if you need a physical qwerty keypad, i suggest you xperia pro or desire Z. but those with keypad are much heavier

actually there's an alternative for desire S, which is galaxy W.

but since you mention video call is a must, then desire S may not fit you cause HTC do not supprt native 3G calls yet, take galaxy S2 or W instead ( there's fring and skype for desire S, but requires internet connection. i may be wrong here)

yup, got the update and installed it.

quite smooth, except for some random reboots, which also happened to me before i updated to 2.3.5

a quick question, is there a way to find out which app that is causing the random reboot?

Today i was using my HTC Desire S just 2 months used, when it suddenly hung up and got non-responsive. So i took out the battery to restart it, but since then it has not turned on. I tried reading to search on Google with other users with similar problems, and i found that they had to get it repaired or something, but my phone is not under warranty since i bought it from UK.

I have already tried to reset it by holding the volume key and pressing power button but it is non-responsive.

It might be related to software since the last thing i did was to download an app from the android market, but it might be something else also, since its not turning on at all.

What is the best solution to get it working again. Where can i take it to get it repaired?

That last time, did u download multiple apps in one time? If that so, your motherboard might be toasted. This is just my opinion after google it. Perhaps, i'm wrong. But after update to sense 3.0. There's no longer multiple download. It will download one by one. It looks like HTC realized it, and corrected it. So, this might supports my opinion.

so what is the solution, can it be repaired or should i just through RM1300 worth cell phone in the garbage.

please advise where it can be taken to be repaired, bearing in mind that i do not have warranty.

I guess my opinion/theory proved.

Sorry to hear that. That's a very bad luck.
About the solution. Erm, hard to say since u don't have warranty. It depends. If u want to repair motherboard, it gonna cost around rm750 if i'm not mistaken. Where? I do not know myself. The only place i know is Sis distribution centre, but that for under warranty devices. Consideration to buy a new phone perhaps not too bad sweat.gif . Again, it's all up to you.

I just hope no one come across this unfortunate event again in the future.

It didn't instantaneously happen. Same with my case. Since I know multiple downloading might burnt the motherboard, I did a little experiment and tried so hard to make it happen since i still under warranty. But it doesn't sad.gif . And recently after update, no longer multiple download is available. So my experiment can't be done. Unless I root and use custom rom which i'm too lazy to do

It not because of HTC... with latest market update the download is done one by one... and before the new OTA come out all DS user use old market unless u update the market manually.. (which i did...)

Thank You for your respond for the battery model.

FYI, Sunglobal also release different battery for HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD and HTC Incredible. So, it is entirely possible that they may not fit each other.

Really scary hearing you guys having dead memory chip. Read about it a lot on XDA Dev.

Mine is a pretty early batch and it seems ok so far. Should be 8 months old now.

Moving on. A little taste of ICS tweaked by Virtuous Team on my Desire S. icon_rolleyes.gif

Go to Home-> Menu-> Settings-> About Phone-> Software Updates-> Check now

Don't need root to update, just download the update file and install to use Android 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0 rclxms.gif

I ordered from this thread.

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1845982&hl=

However, the seller mistaken thought I wanted Incredible S casing, have to order and wait to get Desire S case so I got a refund and bought another cheaper casing.

bro, is it juz suddenly ok? for me is not quite ok as before is not so.
last tues i've went to brightstar service center at plaza berjaya, they said need to left it for 3 working days.
but of course need to backup everything.

that might be last resort for me other than own factory reset. BTW, appreciate if anyone can guide me how to backup my DS data, preferably inside PC.

the phone lag because it using cpu to render the htc sense instead of gpu rendering .

for downgrade the phone . you need to s-off it and root it then flash this flash that bla bla bla . alot of things to do .

if you willing to take the risk . root it and install custom rom smile.gif . there is alot custom rom out there work alot better , alot faster and battery life alot better than stock smile.gif

htc ryhme is quite overprice and more suitable for lady. take sensation would be better if you dont mind its battery life.

further more, baterry you can use 3rd party. want safe buy branded 3rd party battery.

Surprisingly, only very few malaysian would appreciate this phone, this is really an awesome phone for mid-range. I don't have any problems with it.

because the retail price of this phone is rm 1599

where the actual market price is only around rm1000-1200

hmm it happens last week but this week appears fine to me. very weird. but i'm not surprising that it will restart another time, cause even samsung gs2 or gw have this problem. symbian still rocks yo

try to restart the phone by yourself

or turn it off for 5 min then on it back
*
Something is wrong with either your phone or the firmware. I never experience this kind of problem ever since sense 3.0 and now using sense 3.5 custom ROM, everything runs well.

Most people still doesn't know HTC but at least they're doing a bit more nowadays in terms of marketing. They know Samsung more and they will usually go for W.

Good news though, DS will get Sense 4 but later this year.

Yup pulling battery causes it. But not everyone have this problem.

Some people phone died in the middle of updating multiple apps from the market. Really weird.

Basically your phone won't boot at all.

Don't put so much hope on quick official update to ICS. It will take a few months to be ready usually.

But if you're itchy, there's already a ROM ported from One V. As it has Sense Lite it should be perfect for our hardware.

But i don't think we will have any problem at all running a ROM from One X with the full fledge Sense 4.

Hello! Not sure whether this thread is still active or not but I need opinions. I am planning on buying a new battery as backup. So, i thought why not i buy an extended battery thus improves battery life, and use the original one as backup since i had spare rm200. The hard part is which battery should I go for? http://www.mugen-power-batteries.com/htc/h...re-s-s510e.html or http://sunglobal.com.my/enlarge.asp?id=93. Mugen-power is very reliable and there is a review by customer regarding longer battery life, but it's a bit on the expensive side. Meanwhile, sunglobal battery is much more cheaper plus an extra 50 mah, but i just couldn't find a very convincing review regarding improved battery life. Sigh.... hmm.gif

follow your budget, no budget of cause go for mugen. but sometimes expensive doesnt mean is better. it also depends how you take care of it(dont overcharge, charge when it before it reaches 10 or 15%.. my nokia xpress music after buy new battery can last me 11 days, old 1 only max 4 days, what surprise me is it only cost me rm25

bro, you can't have 2 launchers running at a same time, choose one launcher that you like and make it as default. It won't ask u the same questions again. If you clear default, there will be no default launcher therefore, it keeps asking u to select one. Hope you know what I meant.

muslayer,
Did you put your phone to S-OFF? Done any rooting? or it's straight up original? Anyway, I didn't have that problem.

I have a question to ask. My hboot version is 2.000.0002, S-ON, and reading over the first page, it mentioned that Revolutionary only works for hboot 0.98.0002?

Is there a way to root my phone and still be able to use custom roms while still maintaining my hboot version?

I've had this phone for almost a year now and I finally have the balls to try to root it hahahah.

Some help is very much appreciated biggrin.gif

-==EDIT==-

I manage to do it heh. Just would like to know which ROM(s) are you all using (for those who rooted their phones, of course)

Thanks!

Now that you've rooted your stock ROM, you can now install the recovery.

Backup first your stock ROM using the recovery just in case you want to go back. And then go ahead format the phone and install whatever ROM you want. The backup is in your SD card so it's safe there.

I'm using MIUI 4 since i personally like it. Still not perfectly stable though.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies smile.gif

I rooted my phone using this guide, still S-ON though. I'm using Endymion ROM as well. I'm also still looking around to see if there are any ROMs which I might be interested in using later on.

@Joseph Hahn, I did not back up my stock ROM and jumped straight to formatting the phone and installing a custom ROM. Will I be able to go back to my stock ROM then?

After using custom ROM i doubt you'll want to go back hehe... but you can still install it back if you want. I think there's a thread where they compile stock rooted ROM somewhere on XDA.
