i didnt finished my BEng yet. I just finished my 2nd year. but we all know we need to decide to take MEng or only BEng during early of third year.

So I havnt decide yet which one should I take or which one is better for me and for my time biggrin.gif hehe
*
Lol you said you just finished your chemical engineering rclxub.gif

If u plan to do PhD and is confident your results can maintain 2nd upper after final year, then I can only suggest take BEng since you can go straight into PhD after that

Afterall this is your path, you should decide for yourself ultimately

I find this statement deeply deceiving... There's never enough computer to support assignments and projects as they are always used to play Tetris.

A word of advice, always get things done early.. There was this girl, her assignment was considered late (~30mins) cause she couldn't find a computer to print it out. She was making a rather dramatic scene at the office... lol
*
Haha. I didn't face this problem yet but you're right. Many students using the computer for Tetris. sweat.gif

I think I am so lucky as I hand in my assignment on time at last moment. It is not because of insufficient computers. After I clicked the "Print" button, it jammed for 20+ minutes. doh.gif

true. all printers will start jamming and unable to print during the peak hour(hour before assignments deadline)

I was one of the victim in these cases. I stood in front of the printer for half hour to just remove the jammed paper. General engineering practical in campus. doh.gif

If you intend to do PhD, you should start talking to lecturers about potential projects. If you are a First Class candidate, you can start PhD just after your BEng, saving you time and money. Talk to some of the lecturers where their research interest maps yours, if he/she shows interest to take you in next year, then you can take BEng - graduate fast and start PhD fast.

Nevertheless, if research is the route you want, an MSc will be a better qualification than MEng as MSc requires you to complete a 60 credits thesis.

so in conclusion...its possible rely my assignments solely with the pc there provided being the early bird?
(i do not own a laptop so yeah...)

Get a laptop if possible. PCs in TISCRA have renowned reputations of giving blue screen during the most exciting time and auto recovery could fail. Strictly limit your usage of PCs in TISCRA for printing and 9gag purposes only.

Qualification and money. If you are a local student, you'll need STPM or matriculation to get into public universities - A-Level can't bring you there! If you are an international student, qualification will not be a limitation for you in picking universities.

Regardless of you are local or international, if you think you are rich, Nottingham! If you are constrained financially, need PTPTN for your studies, then if you still can go public universities and can get the course you want to, public universities could worth your consideration.

Maybe you want to tell us more about your situation?

I think it's worth investing on a good printer, make it portable and always stand-by in TISCRA around 1:30pm (for business school assignment) and 4:00pm (for engineering assignment) and charge 30 cent per BW paper. Should be able to turn over rather quickly.

If you are in UM, USM or some more reputable public universities and could secure good grades, I don't think the difference would be significant. Either way, not that significant to justify the RM100,000 difference.
The catch with public university is that you don't really get to choose.

Laptop is enough. You'll need workstation only when you are doing your projects, of which you can apply to get one of them in the dedicated project lab. As for tablet, to each his need I suppose.

Well, think of it this way, you paid RM1,000 to secure a spot in USM then you'll feel better, and you avoid paying RM100,000 more!

Library opens til 11pm, they are building more accommodation behind (purple?) building, and I heard they are building a childcare centre at orange building too... Also heard the university will switch to Moodle completely next academic year.

Hey a question. Could you estimate for me how much do you spend on living cost per week when you were in UK? Wanna know if I'm able to afford it.

11pm? That's an improvement I suppose. Library in UK campus open 24/7 a few months before exam time. Very encouraging for hardcore study. =D

Living cost. Depends alot on where you stay, what you eat.

Accommodation:

Off campus can be around GBP60 to GBP100 per week (yes, week! *faint*), depending on location and facilities. On-campus is roughly GBP150 tops per week. You should take a look at UNIPOL and the accommodation section of the website for more accurate estimations. There are two major 'tamans' called Beeston and Dunkirk which are right next to the University Park campus.

Note that on-campus will only let you stay during term time (i.e. Christmas and Easter holidays, which are a month long, you have to find alternative accommodation unless you travel. I slept on my friend's living room couch.)

Food:

If you stay on-campus, it is included in your accommodation fees. Breakfast and dinner provided all weekdays, and lunch you have GBP5.10 on your mealcard. Weekends got brunch and dinner. Some halls have better cooks than others. Have to see luck.

Off campus, I estimate if you buy groceries and cook for yourself, maybe..GBP20 per week or less? Eating out is really expensive, try to avoid. As typical Malaysian students who miss Malaysian food, its quite easy to get together a group of friends and have a huge cook out every now and then instead of eating out.

Entertainment:

The UK campus has really good sporting facilities, but they are not free. The fees change sometimes, so check them out here.

http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/sport/membersh...ershipfees.aspx

Clubbing. Ah..do you go? If you do, then there are two options. One is go clubbing with the ang mohs, their events usually have a cheaper door charge, and drinks have promotions. Other option is to attend oriental nights, usually about a pound or two (or three) more expensive than the ang moh events although you can get cheaper if you buy beforehand and not on the door. Drinks also full price. Tip: Pre-drink (also called pre-lash) at someone's place first before going out. Save alot of money on drinks.

Transport:

Some bus services have a student price of 1 pound flat rate from anywhere to anywhere else. Otherwise you'll have to look at information boards to find out how much your journey will cost. Alternative is to walk. You will do alot of walking there, but no worries, climate very walking friendly. (Except for the rain.)

Anything specific you wanna know? I'll try my best to answer. =P

Edit: Just realised I didn't actually answer your question. =/ Uhmm...really depends on what kind of life you wanna live lah. If you conscientiously save money, be careful, and stick to your budget, then you'd be surprised at the cost of living. Can be quite low if you don't x5 their money.

I take it that you want to compromise to attend your dream university just because you think the accommodation is overpriced?

I don't have much advice on the course you want to study. It's relatively new course - means smaller class, better attention. The ride might be a bit bumpy as they slowly streamline their teaching, course structure etc. - don't think that you are the newbie there only, the lecturer could be newbie in delivering the lectures (even though it might be their forte, they may still need to take time to find the best way to present it out), the admin could be newbie in handling this new course etc. But with tight quality control with the UK side, the education quality should be of top-notch.

What other institutions is in your mind right now? TBH, unless it's courses not offered by Nottingham, for the rest, I think the closest, if not the only, competitor is Monash - of which the length of study (some degree in Nottingham can be finished in 3 years, cost and time saving) and environment (step out to meet jungle, or step out to meet pyramid, your choice) should be the tie breaker.

Congratz on the offer. On the accommodation, do not expect them to reply you until the last few weeks before commencement of your class. I applied mine in April and got reply in mid August (which required me to reply and pay the deposits in less than seven days). Although I did get my first choice of room.

That is a great review!! thumbup.gif TTJ! I think you should include this in the first post!!

one more thumbup.gif for awesomeness

Added on July 15, 2012, 12:24 amOn a side note.. it's already mid-July and I still haven't got my On-Campus deposits back despite promised to bank-in within two weeks from the day I checked out. Called up the office, the lady was, for no reason, pissed at me inquiring my payment status.. I wasn't even rude! If anything I was being nicer than the person who phone people up for Gym Memberships and insurance promoters.

P.S. She didn't even get my name, so I assume that the problem is not isolated only on me? Either that or she's being a classic tele-swine.

Thanks! =) If you do go, you can just ask me questions, I'll be more than happy to answer (If I know the answer larh. =P) Honestly though, it's really a good experience. I strongly suggest you go for it if you can. Money is one thing lah, but the experience is priceless. And living so far away from home..it teaches you things la.

Was never really happy about the accommodation punya 'customer service'. They can be super rude for no reason, talk to you like you are some juvenile criminal like that. But don't fight fire with fire lah. It's better just to grin and bear with it. biggrin.gif

Edit: I mean accommodation in UNMC ya. The accommodation office in UK are damn nice. They will literally go out of their way to help you. Working culture there very different lah, all I can say.

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone here studied Msc in Management Psychology before UNMC? Appreciate any comments on the lectures etc. I have already fulfilled the pre conditional offer (IELTS) by UNMC but i have yet to decide to go or not to go. The other option is to do I/O psychology in UKM.

Please please tell me more about studying in UNMC. Need i change to a nerd mode or it would be fun studying there with tonnes of activities/sports/etc biggrin.gif

Later Dude

erm. Not only overprice but the condition as well. I wouldn't mind working hard and be independent for degree but the accommodation factor do affect me a lot. I 'm considering both Monash and IMU. but Monash's medical bioscience focuses more on tropical diseases so i tend to lean more towards IMU.
