On another unrelated note,

I find it extremely inefficient that their only way of recording attendance is by passing a few blank pieces of paper around for people to write down their name, ID and signature.

Extremely easy to cheat
Very slow (for people to write it down and randomly passing it around)
And takes lots of huge man hour to key in into their database (<- this I'm not sure but I imagine they would digitize it one way or another)
*
Isn't that good for you? Or you prefer the lecturers spend time to call names one by one (imagine a class of 200), or invest in smart card system (even then you can hand your student ID to friends for that), or fingerprint system?
I highly doubt they really care a lot about your attendance. It's more on references like to prove to sponsors that you have been attending to classes etc.

QUOTE(tanjinjack @ May 22 2012, 04:05 PM)
If it's 180 applicants for just foundation, what's the numbers for all courses across the uni? It should really take some time to process. Admission team is not huge (they only need to be huge during major intake, not all-year round), and they have their own jobs on their hands too, they don't just work to review your applications. Every application is unique, and is bound to have problems, with some of them must go through their leader to decide - who's someone busier than them and have less time to entertain these applications. Some of them are actually reviewed by lecturers instead of just admission team, who are also someone busy with their jobs.

It's not about inefficiency, it's the system. That being said, it's not some money-sucking application where you can get an offer on the spot of applying. Look beyond, there's quality embedded in the application reviewing. (Oh man, so greasy the talk!)

It's just how a University works, you don't need a person to tell you or even force you to a class, it's all about the students themselves when they come to this age. Self-disipline is important, is your own lose if you cheat, you do the things, you take the risk and the consequences.

I don't care about my attendance.
Attendance have no consequence on local student at all. (aside from external party)

What I do care, it the massive wasted man-hour for they to key in the record.
Seriously, think of the hours wasted.

It's not about student self discipline.
It's about the gross inefficiency of such system.
Is there even a point for such system?

And yes, I do expect them to invest in smart card system.
It's not hard. They just need to slightly modify the machine we tap to photostat.

It's obviously faster. (3 sec to tap vs. 12 sec to write down)
And if accuracy is a concern, the lecturer (or designed students) can stand watch.
1 student per card.
Not perfect, but at least a more accurate and better student.

The question here is, do they really document well the attendance? Or they just simply keep the whole sheet - and when people asked for it - "hey, this boy this time is in class bo?" - only they look it up from the sheets they keep. I believe that's the way the so-called attendance system works.
Why a change when they don't think it's broken.

it is meant to be tough all the way, i would say its challenging for those who loves it biggrin.gif
for lecture class, usually it is big, class will be split to smaller for tutorials, labs ,and study skill class etc etc...

Life gonna be busy once you get into University. But enjoy the time you have during your university, once graduate and start working, you will miss study life, because day after day you're doing the same things when you're working and not many holidays at that time biggrin.gif

Added on May 25, 2012, 2:46 amIt seems like many people are going for engineering, how's business students life then? Anyone here sharing his or her experiences?

It's...
Year 1: Hmm, course isn't that easy, never mind, it should get better next year.
Year 2: Hmm, this is tougher, I suppose Year 3 is easier as we have less modules to deal with.
Year 3: Oh my, why are they so many modules' assignments when I need to rush for my coursework? Now I experienced this before, Year 4 should be easier.
Year 4: What is all this shit assignment that takes up 1 week to complete. Nah, graduating soon, whatever!

It's actually just about 3.5 years as I joined during January 2009 in a minor intake (with the intake count of 6 people in my course - still we managed a record of 50% people falling asleep in the class!).
It certainly flies - I always tell myself that I want to do "this" next sem/year, but repeat the same saying on the next sem/year itself. But still, I get to spend my time with a group of close friends which I find really really comfortable with - and I can tell it's going to be fun when one of us gets married and we get to be his "brother"!

Thanks for the overview. haha. I get it, the brotherhood kicks in when u mix with the same close friends for a long time smile.gif. Anyway, alot of engineering student drop out each year? or they retake papers when they fail? Is it common in UNMC?
