PETALING JAYA: A hacker group has threatened to attack the www.malaysia.gov.my website.

The group, which calls itself Anonymous, said it will launch the attack at 7.30pm GMT on Wednesday (3.30am Thursday Malaysian time) and has named it “Operation Malaysia.”

It posted the threat in a graphic on this website, http://i.imgur.com/PTFWh.png.

user posted image

Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at the F-Secure Corporation - a computer security software company based in Helsinki, Finland - tweeted about the threat at 4.42am Malaysian time.

No other details were available at this time. It is also not known why Anonymous has targeted the Malaysian website.
Hacker group Anonymous threatens to attack Malaysian Government website.

But there has been an uptick in “hacktivism” these past weeks, where hacker groups have targeted various organisations for political purposes.

Hackers have attacked the International Monetary Fund and Sony PlayStation Network, as well as the networks of aeronautics company Lockheed Martin Corp and Citibank in North America, amongst others.

Anonymous was blamed for the hack into the PlayStation network but a spokesman for the group has denied involvement, saying that its aims are political. Spain, however, has arrested three suspected members of the hacker group for that attack.

Anonymous apparently comprises a vast number of hackers in various countries, who have been organised into cells that share common goals. They operate anonymously but in a co-ordinated fashion.

This gonna be EPIC.
Another operation from us and it's in Malaysia. That's what they will get for their decision to censored file sharing sites.

Greetings, Malaysia, We have seen the censorship taken by the Malaysian government, blocking sites like The Pirate Bay, and WikiLeaks. Malaysia is one of the world's strictest governments, even blocking out movies, and television shows. These acts of censorship are inexcusable. You are taking away a basic human right. The internet is here for freedom, without fear of government interference. Do not think that no one else notices. Your structured government has done the talking, and we hear loud and clear. Let this be an announcement to all your people. This is a sign, a warning, and an opportunity to listen to ideas above your own. In a way you are being stubborn. But how will this help anyone or your country. We fear that if you make further decisions to take away human freedom. We are obligated to act fast and have no mercy. For rules were meant to be broken. And corruption was meant to be washed away and forgiven. Now we will wash your corruption away so be prepared. Take this as a favor.

I'm also not happy that the people of my country doesn't have freedom, how we live is controlled, what we can do on the internet is controlled, what we wanna watched and listen is controlled. Why do we need some other fags to decide what and how to live our life. Our life is our decision.

If anything, I'd feel happy if the aftermath of this results in govt being more security conscious when implementing new e-services.

FS not free for all ticket for piracy.

I guess most malaysians need to wake up and realize that there's no free software, music and video (unless it's an indie or really crappy.. lol)

Bayar software/music/video ori takleh, beli kereta dengan 75+% import duti boleh. Beli iphone4 boleh. WTF? concrete object = property, abstract/services = cannot be charged? I guess kedai gunting have to gulung tikar already.

Either way, I'm still not happy, we could actually be more then what we are.

I know that no country will grant their "citizen/rakyat" that freedom but what we watch and listen to shouldn't even be an issue.

Why suddenly jump to USA? anyways, since u pointed out that every shit there is "monitored by the CIA and you dont even know it." then how you came to know about it? just as everyone else... so we do know that our shit is being monitored, as long as we don't do harm to others, I guess we're gonna be okay and Malaysia is not as advance as USA to even invest in those kind of monitoring, if we were to be even half of what USA is... I think our system would be monitored twice the more.

They all know they're being monitored. But they dont know WHAT and WHERE and WHEN.

One of the biggest tool for the government to spy is through CLOUD COMPUTING and MOBILE DEVICES.

So if you have one single pirate item in your possession, that is the license to pirate everything else? Nice logic, no wonder thieves will be thieves.

I used to live on pirated software because I was a student then, software was around RM-250-300ish (this was the early 90s), and I don't earn money. Now, with OSS and alternatives, why still bother? Ubuntu is one of the more epic examples out there. Should really thanked the ad-based software development model for making available cheap to free alternatives.

And since I earn my own money I also bought 3-4 copies of original windows. The downside? I drive an almost 20 year old car it's cheaper. 40,000K cheaper than a new camry/accord in fact. And that's the money that I save to buy my flatscreen, my software and my music.

As for music, ever since I can buy original itunes track at USD0.99.. why the heck not? it's not like the old days where the only option is CD/LP/LD/DVD which were dictated by our govt taxation rate. I don't listen to the entire album anyway, so the single song purchase option was what I was waiting for.

As for piracy of movies/TV series, I find it a bit of a non-issue, as most homes now have astro, and most of the shows being downloaded are going to be shown on astro anyway, since astro is so slow when it comes to airing current episodes. Such as House MD, CSI etc. etc. And the bulk of it are college students, who have Astro at home, but not at their dorms/college apartments.

malaysia local content = hardly 10%

so if all don go piracy, means most our ringgit goes overseas for those foreign content.

Lol, now that's a good excuse. Tetiba semua negara lain boycott our country.

There will always be people who gain from it. If got enough volume, then they will construct servers locally. local server = faster speed. When faster speed, more people will opt for FTTH. Then we get faster internet.. then can get HD quality broadcasting of anything....

right now SD (standard) sattelite TV also malaysia people proud already. Beyond HD? You sure it's HD? I'm pretty sure I've seen clearer HD satTVs. Not even mentioning UniFi yet.. lol

Gooding content? you kidding me? Got AF what.. Quite popular show that..

If you meant gooding content like compare House MD/Firefly/<insert favourite series here> to Gerak Khas <insert astro RIA programming list>... "Sheet, even I don't know how to answer that one"

IMO,
No gooding content because with 28million of Malaysian population, we don't have a big enough talent pool, and those that does, goes overseas already.. leaving the ___________________ ones behind.

IMHO, don't bother arguing with pirates. As the saying goes "Nak seribu daya, tak nak seribu dalih", Hunger for iPhone 4, no prob. Excuses for pirating, 300 page is nowhere near enough to list out why merompak is OK.
I just love those reasons btw, if a robber robs a home, he should rob EVERY home there is. thumbup.gif

Hacker group to attack M'sian Govt portal

"Greetings, Malaysia, We have seen the censorship taken by the Malaysian government, blocking sites like The Pirate Bay, and WikiLeaks. Take this as a favor."

Correctomundo, but then again, original software was expensive back in the day. Anyone still remembers the retail price for a MS Dos 5.0/6.22 retail pack? Or does anyone remember how much they paid for NCSA Mosaic/Netscape back then?

However, I also realise that most Malaysians rather pay 500K+ for house and 160K for car than buy everything original software, since showing off the original software licence agreement is NOT AS COOL as showing off a pair Bvlgari pants / a 200K renovation / 160+K car / cool gadgets. (even if the said gadget is jailbroken and full of pirated apps.. hey, in some circles, it's a badge of l337ness) - Note: go lepak at mamak kopitiam/warungs, there's sure to be a young teen group toting latest gadgets and showing off to their friends.

I just love those reasons btw, if a robber robs a home, he should rob EVERY home there is.  thumbup.gif

500k house = its yours for keeps
160k car = its yours for keeps

50k software = its not even yours. Just license to use.

Original Licensing is like buying a chair which you dont own (oxymoron):

so why would anyone wanna buy a chair that isn't even theirs for keeps? and each time you move house, your chair need to send back to factory, and get permission so u can carry it to another house to stay, and they will come check if you dont make duplicates of the chair. and that only YOU can sit on the chair, not your momma, nor your dada, nor your sistaa.
And worse, this chair can break and hurt your bum, and the manufacturer are not liable.

so why buy such shit chair? laugh.gif

There is something missing; MONEY. For the equivalent amount of product used, there's an equivalent amount of money for the owner. But, (example) there's 100 people using although only 50 items worth of money in their account. Another thing is, when you purchased something, you buy a license for usage. If you're using an item without the permission/license, what does that make you? Awesome?

Anyway the term is not important. I used 'rompak' just because the Malay translated of piracy is 'Cetak Rompak'. What is important is it is illegal. What's the point of arguing if it is already stated by law as illegal?

kerana nila setitik, rosak susu sebelanga

those file hosters are also used by people who wants to have an online storage, similar to icloud etc to store their documents, files etc

that's why some people protests cause their important files are being blocked by the government because of piracy, cause that's the government reasoning behind all this fiasco

so at the end of the day, this is not mainly about piracy, although i do agree most of the contents are illegal-it's about internet censorship, which has been said is violating human rights

you cannot control the internet, and the things people upload to the net everyday, it's their right as a user of internet

but if one user was found to be sharing illegal file, he or she must be reported, provided that there's a solid proof he or she downloaded or uploaded the said illegal file, that's the only sensible thing to do, without hurting the masses

False logic

When i purchase a chair. I own it. I can do whatevr i want with it. I can share it with whomever I want with it. And if the chair breaks and hurt me, i can sue for damages.

Now apply that for software/digital content. Cant apply, does it?

I used to think that piracy is okay.. esp when I was poor. I also think that piracy is a good alternative for VERY POOR people with little or no alternatives. The strange thing is, that Malaysians can pay for expensive cars and houses, but balk at purchasing software just because they can't SHOW IT OFF.

QUOTE(maxpudding @ Jun 14 2011, 01:13 PM)
doh.gif

kerana nila setitik, rosak susu sebelanga

those file hosters are also used by people who wants to have an online storage, similar to icloud etc to store their documents, files etc

that's why some people protests cause their important files are being blocked by the government because of piracy, cause that's the government reasoning behind all this fiasco

so at the end of the day, this is not mainly about piracy, although i do agree most of the contents are illegal-it's about internet censorship, which has been said is violating human rights

you cannot control the internet, and the things people upload to the net everyday, it's their right as a user of internet

but if one user was found to be sharing illegal file, he or she must be reported, provided that there's a solid proof he or she downloaded or uploaded the said illegal file, that's the only sensible thing to do, without hurting the masses
*
I am not questioning the legality of said file hoster but rather the usage of Malaysian of the said websites. If there were none that use for illegal purposes then there wouldn't be a problem right? But there are. And the bulk of complainers are of from the piracy crowd. I'll shut up if the complain is based on legal usage, but shouting FREEDOM when all they do is piracy? I can only say padan muka to this people although I do feel sympathy to those that uses it legally.

QUOTE(happy4ever @ Jun 14 2011, 01:13 PM)
False logic

When i purchase a chair. I own it. I can do whatevr i want with it. I can share it with whomever I want with it. And if the chair breaks and hurt me, i can sue for damages.

Now apply that for software/digital content. Cant apply, does it?

Law is man made. paid for by big software houses and producers. So cetak, jangan tak cetak.
*
Since you are insisting on comparing with physical product with digital ones, let me give an example of a car. You buy a car, go ahead. Do what you want. Buy an Inspira change it to Lancer. You own it so yes, you can do anything to it. But is it really ANYTHING? Let say I like the MIVEC engine. So can I use the design on my car without paying Mitsu the license/royalty? Can they sue you? Yes they can, because while you own the physical stuff, they still do own the design patents. Same as buying software.

However, as I said before, it doesn't matter what the argument is, is it legal or illegal? Answer that question.

Actually it doesn't mean counter reset to zero. You just swear on principle that you won't corrupt yourself further, like swearing not to eat spoilt food since it makes your stomach cry for mercy.

By some poster's reckoning, since I already make mistake once, I'm entitled to/must repeat my mistake or risk being called a hypocrite?.

OT.. :
(or is anybody having an image of sin counter clicking an additional increment in their head?) LOL. I know I don't.

Honestly, I don't think I can change anyone's mind. People who insist on pirating even if they can afford it will keep pirating regardless. Sympathies to the lost of legal mirrors for legal software/materials. It was a better option than scribd.com for hosting documents while it lasted. (because don't need to login)

Anyway. DNS block is a good first step. Kudo's to the ISPs for implementing this rather than some roundabout way. At least some of the screamers here obviously doesn't know how it's easily circumvented.

I came here to read about Anon's attack at first anyway.. Hopefully it will be a good lesson to our govt. regarding internet security. I doubt any important or incriminating information will be obtained and exposed anyway.

BTW, how about discussing potential measures govt will take for avoiding the attack? Since it's timed, I assume its a DDOS. but if it's about obtaining data (i.e. actual hacking into databases) I wonder what our govt will do? Take the server offline for a while?

Anonymous was blamed for the hack into the PlayStation network but a spokesman for the group has denied involvement, saying that its aims are political. Spain, however, has arrested three suspected members of the hacker group for that attack.

Anonymous apparently comprises a vast number of hackers in various countries, who have been organised into cells that share common goals. They operate anonymously but in a co-ordinated fashion.

That one of course people will pirate regardless of whether it's right or wrong.

Same like banned books or movies.. Govt ban.. what happens? people go download illegally.

I hate censorship as much as the next guy, but some people confuse censorship with the right to pirate, so much so that even when got legal alternative still pirate.

Good question. Why haven't they? Now before I begin saying anything, I wish not to repeat a history of argument I made a few days back where one is barking and another is meowing. All my earlier post are largely on illegal act of piracy itself, NOT the act of SKMM to ban those websites.

I have made another post in another thread on why they resort to such methods (since that is your argument). My answer is simple, lazy arses. They're taking the easy way out assuming after complaints by TM since their customers are hogging bandwidth for illegal usage. So with the mask of act against piracy, they're blocking such websites with very little intention to actually combat piracy. I for one am more happy if they go and sue each pirates. IIRC there was a case of someone being sued for USD$2000 for every single mp3 he download. Boy now that is awesome.

QUOTE(maxpudding @ Jun 14 2011, 01:36 PM)

I do and my sympathies to these people. Although you don't seem to read either. They are valid, sure. But my point is padan muka towards the pirates. Not towards the one with legal usage. Although one funny things is, whenever this kind of argument pops up, they will ALWAYS use these poor people for their own greedy self. I'm not talking about you per se, but there are a few people quoting these people just to worm off that they want a way out so they can continue pirating. Sad really using other people misfortune for their own advantage. Kinda like torrent and linux distro. I mean, how many people even torrent linux distro? And yet it never fails to be mentioned. I myself get it from direct download as quite a few distro provides direct downloads.

so why not track those that abuse the websites then?
oh boi you don't read that much, do you? Some have made complaints to MCMC due to their interrupted works done due to the blockage, in the early hours of the block, a few legal users complaint they can't send their notes to other researchers overseas due to that...so they made a complaint, albeit their numbers are few, their complaint still valid, no?
file hosters = legal

abusing file hosters by uploading copyrighted materials = illegal

so you punish the file hosters because "most" of their contents are illegal, great
ROFL speaking like a true deviant

like i said before, I do not condone piracy

am I talking to morons here? nak discuss pun susah sebab banyak betul clairvoyant kat dalam forum ni can detect who's a saint and who's not

Have they ever reported online or tech related news?

Berita lain lain = no so much.

I'm actually impressed the star.com.my caught it early actually. Someone in their news department is actually following tweets for news. smile.gif

*
ah you're still here

most people nowadays can afford computers.

but the think is, not all can afford legal softwares.

and thos softwares, comes with a price, like spss, adobe, they are too expensive,

especially to a student.

censorship, is another issue, no one likes it, we are old enough to think for ourselves.

but i see, a lot of content is blocked or not available in this country. music, movies.

Yes, because IMO, the govt believes mainstream media corrupts the minds of malaysians. Simply put, that imply that Malaysians aren't the type to think for themselves. Based on the internet forums.. can you blame them? tongue.gif

SPSS and Adobe got student packages. Unfortunately you should blame the Uni's for not fulfilling their responsibility so they can provide their students with bulk student discounted software. I also didn't know about it when I was a student. (>_>).. After working only know about all these...

Haha you took the bait, ROFL

I do read long long debates on your "forum" but meh I don't pay much attention to them cause I found the arguments were made very seagates-ish

Why is this ban worrying? Simple.

It starts as "combat against internet piracy. During this period, the government will attempt to "condition" the people that censorship is a good thing. Eventually, due to abuse of power, and due to not being questioned by the public over their actions, they'll start censoring the websites which they claim is 'detrimental' to national security, based on their convenience.

Ok.

On a personal note, I don't own any pirated stuff. Really.

I don't download or torrent anything which is copyrighted. I use sharing sites to access documents and files that are mean to be shared. Like fan made videos and patches for games I play which have been APPROVED by the original users.

I pay for my IPhone apps and my songs and ALL my songs have a CD sitting in my ROOM. I own a PSP with several UMD's sitting in my room. I admit when I was young I did buy pirated good's because, I DID NOT KNOW BETTER. I DO NOW. I did not know the damage I was causing.

An old story I read many many years ago in the cover of a game I pirated.

Once upon a time, farmers would come down from a mountain to sell rice at a village. The village people would purchase the rice and the farmers would return every season. However, some thieves would steal some of the rice and sell it to the villagers instead. Thus the farmers sold less and less and one day they stopped coming back. The thieves asked where the farmers had gone and the people said they didn't have enough rice to sell anymore. The thieves cried "But we didn't know they would stop coming. We wouldn't have done it. Now how are we going to survive?" But it was too late, the farmers never came back.

It's a simple story and it doesn't actually have a alot of logic involved but the idea behind it is very simple.

I understand the idea and if I cannot afford something I don't buy it. Simple.

I am against the blocking of the websites, not because I use them, but because ordinary people like me do use them for LEGITIMATE reasons like trading ORIGINAL data and WORK which we create ourselves and want to share to other people. At the end of the day, pirate users need to be caught and punished but right now all i know is that us legitimate users are forced to find alternative and probably expensive means to procure the same services. What if we've PAID for those websites?

For you pirates,
do what you want, but know that what you did caused this mess. Doesn't matter what you say, or how you justify it. It happened. It doesn't matter that the majority of malaysians do it, but it's done all the same.

For the legitimate users,
For some of us we came into this camp alittle late. I've been an original user for some 9 years already. I hope that more of you will be resolute enough to join and remain in this camp. Don't look down on pirated users, but instead pity them, knowing that sooner or later more and more measures will be taken to block our freedom.

For the record, although I am against the blocking. I grudgingly admit that this is the way to go. It must be done, or us Malaysians will never wake up to copyrighting. We had a good free run while the years lasted but it's finally caught up to all our abuse. I hope you all understand that. As it is, i've lost enough friends for telling them to go legit.

thank you
Z

Firstly, TLDR
Secondly, the real reason for the blocking is not to combat piracy, because piracy will still go on even with this file hosting sites being blocked. If they wanted to really combat piracy, got many other things that can be done instead of blocking file hosting sites.. The only reason is to make Malaysian get used to contents being blocked. So when the time comes to block sensitive or something that can damage their reputation, it is gonna be easier as Malaysian would be used to contents being blocked by then.
Finally, Malaysia is gonna be the 2nd China. But hopefully Malaysia will be Kuasa Besar Dunia by then, if not... all Malaysians can go 14th floor.

*
If you didn't read my post, Do you know what i'm talking about?

As it is, the blocking doesn't mean nuts as you can still access those sites via other methods. What it means to the uneducated voting masses is another thing.

The blocks indicates that the freedom of internet is restricted. If they continue this kind of action, we won't be chatting in kopitiam in the future.

They operate overseas since. They are not Malaysian. They have successfully hacked and destroyed the Spain Police website once due to the same reason.
And that is spain!
Here in Malaysia, even the UiTM student portal was once hacked by a UiTM alumni because of revenge and just for the sake of fun.

Yea, you're not looking at the bigger picture. The issue is not about the block but about Human Rights and the usage of internet being restricted and this is only the start, which in the first place shouldn't even happen.

there will be malaysians. in the interview from the link provided, they admit they can't do similar things in china because they don't have enough people based there. in turkey more than 20 people were arrested. spain has arrested 3 people.

i dunno about you guys but i treat this like the napster issue. close that down, so many other avenues. crying and retaliating because too lazy to do something to get past the block or just use sites (for every rapidshare there are 100 hotfiles). be men and not become keyboard warriors only.

So basically, they're hacking. Guys, they're not hacking the website. They will just taking down the website by flooding it with requests.

They're just anonymous. Anonymous =/= LulzSec. LulzSec is a group of hackers. Anonymous don't hack. They're just scattered everywhere around the world fighting together towards one goal, freedom of speech. In this case, internet freedom.

QUOTE(sadako-chan @ Jun 14 2011, 12:15 PM)

Hey I'm amazed, dear hypocrite.

So when the time you were a student, you're okay with piracy, but now you're condemning it and want us to buy it. Have you forgotten that not all of us are rich, some are still student as well?

Based on your logic in your post above, as long as we're students = OKAY to pirate.

So I'm still a student, so who the heck cares if I want to pirate, yeah? And no, I can't even afford a phone more than RM400-500, let alone any apple products.

Remember this. Corporate fellas who are attacking consumer piracy are the same bunch of douches-bags who practice corporate piracy.

However, the issue here isn't piracy. The issue here is censorship. When the government has the power to censor or control, it will by nature refuse to give up that power.

It doesn't matter what initiated it. Censorship is something most governments have been trying to implement but implementing them would cause an uproar among the people.

Thus, they dare not touch it. So, they resort to subtle censorship. It starts with websites that give them an excuse to ban, and slowly, the list will grow into things that the government feels the need to conveniently censor, since by definition, websites that face censorship, is ambiguous, the government takes advantage of this.

It starts small, we may end up with China's Green Dam project.

I have to say I'm not supporting piracy but this is just the wrong way to do it.

To me, it's not a question of what they're banning, it's a problem of them even doing it. I view it as a slippery slope. If we allow the government to ban these file-sharing sites, then what next? They've already started with the banning of certain smut websites, websites that are exposing their wrongdoings such as gutteruncensored.com (yes, the site also has smut) and are now doing this. It's not up to the government to tell us full-grown adults what we can or cannot watch.

We have a right to a free and unpoliced access to the internet, regardless of the content. (Yes, the UN has recently declared the right to internet access as a human right).

Frankly, I'm surprised at the lack of public uproar over this matter.

Exactly. Doesn't matter what they censor, the point is, they are censoring. Power to determine what people see and don't see is too much for politicians to handle. Its an individual belief and right to decide what's good and what's bad for themselves.

Anonymous can be a disease, or the squalor that gives us the right to live on this Earth.

Anonymous is a puzzle that cannot be solved.

In order to defeat Anonymous, it is required that you suffer greater than Stalin, and outsmart everyone while withholding your true name.

You would have to be mightier than God himself and Satan combined.

You would have to undo so many things, and create so many devices.

In other words....only Anonymous can defeat Anonymous. and even then, you would be Anonymous, thus making Anonymous a paradox.

In other words....only Anonymous can defeat Anonymous. and even then, you would be Anonymous, thus making Anonymous a paradox.

what i don't understand is how many of you who are happy that the government will have another good excuse to spend our money. think bijan and gang will care? they're probably LOL-ing wondering what to spend the profits on. hack websites that are useful to malaysians has no point. better hack their propaganda sites, campaign sites, not those that will burden other people.

This. I've been saying this a few times. If they bring down Malaysian governments website, it will the govt all the more reason to spend MORE money uselessly. 'Yo my kroni, here RM100mil for Anonymous counter-measure'. All thanks to the supporters here.

Aren't they already (farking idiot that is by what I see most /k/ portray them)? They'll spend on money on every chance they get, so why should you give them more reason to do so?
