current tank 50cm set up with coral sand ( oe need to add some other sand??), small kapcai led light (duno sufficient for few momos or not (after get frm lyung nx mth), and a filter hob 600l/hr. temperature during aircon is 23-25, and without aircon is 25-27.

Added on November 18, 2012, 11:16 ambtw, to add on, between otto and chinese (golden algae eater), both have the same funtions? read from some google info, said its the same, just GAE size will be getting bigger,

none fish eat poo XD
If you have another plants beside of marimo, poo is good for their nutritions
if you dont like, then syphon the poo by using a small hose (really efficient!)
by sucking them via ur mouth (but don't swallow it!)

when your tank is still new, remember to give ur bottom fishes some food, like algae wafers
if you don't have algae in ur tank yet, give the otto cucumber, drowned it to the bottom by binding it to a small stone smile.gif
my otto eat cucumber in the first time, now they always eat algae/slime in the tank. Only feed the Bettas now..

I think u don't want to add Chinese Algae Eater, because when they're getting Bigger they sometimes kills other small fish...

Effectiveness wise GAE is much more rajin, but they grow bigger as compared to otto as mentioned by Azure biggrin.gif Another risk of having GAE is, sometime they are too crazy and may jump out from the tank biggrin.gif

I did that with my otto poo too! hahaha XDD
Otto produce so much poo everyday, they keep eating and eating XDD so diligent
easy to clean because they often poo in 1 spot, but it doesn't work if the gravel is black, u can't see the poo

Hey guys, newbie here. I am interested in these cute balls smile.gif ,planning to get them. But wanna ask some things first
1.if i keep in inside my room with no sunlight,no aircon, light just from my ceiling lamp(means i will turn it off when i sleep, and turn it on when i'm awake). Is it enough for them?

2.i want to put little fish inside with marimo,What type of fish u guys suggest?just wanna put 1 or 2 with it to make it more lively lol. But i dont have filter and other aquarium things. Just square like container, can i do it?
PS: betta fish seems the best, betta+marimo look so cutee!!but, can betta live with my condition? (using tap water, light just from ceiling lamp,no filter and other equipment)
Thanks before smile.gif

1. marimo must avoid sunlight, use desk lamp (4-8 hours a day). for 10 hours more. algae may growth. No aircon : as long as the temperature is less than 28 Celcius Degree I guess..

2. Betta don't need filter, well but use filter is better. Remember to cycle ur aquarium first when u use filter. without filter u must change the water once/twice a week, depend on the size of ur aquarium, for 5 gallon minimum u change the water every once a week. for less than 5 gallon, u need to change the water twice a week (25-50% every water change). Minimum size of Betta's aquarium is 1 Gallon, never ever put Betta in a glass/small bowl/a vase, Betta won't be happy and have a short life span. About lamp for betta, a proffesional breeder suggest me to give sunlight on Betta every morning only for 30 minutes, to keep the colour vibrance ;p hehehe. But u can't let ur marimo out for sunlight at that time.

Leave them long enough in the sun and they'll never pearl.

Give em a water bath + massage, cycle the water inside the marimos out so they get fresh water on the inside, then expose them to a cool, strong white light.

doh.gif Sorry, previously I was scared of breaking up the marimo if I massaged it too hard but after that i followed your advice and tried massaging it harder and changing the water a few times. When massaging it a slight murky greenish water was emited but after a few massages the water inside it was finally fully clean biggrin.gif

I've even read somewhere on the internet where not pearling doesn't always mean it's unhealthy too. But still I haven't seen it pearl since I bought it tongue.gif Maybe need to wait a few weeks for it to recover from the "ride" in the packaging? thumbup.gif Hope it can pearl soon unsure.gif

Mostly clear water is good.

Green is healthy, pearling is just a bonus. If you have something agitating the water like a bubbler or filter that will make it hard for bubbles to accumulate. The light needs to be quite strong to get a good amount, too.

I think in your case this needs to be said; don't over do it, be patient. It's possible to love your marimos to death. And NO MORE SUN!!

For plants hobby, one need to be patient and not expect immediate response from the plant especially Marimos, plant unlike animal, which most of the symptoms/processes are very significantly observed in a short time. Either the "greeness" of the Marimo vary according to water parameter (Tank setup) it doesnt matter of dark or light, as long as green, u have nothing to worry. smile.gif
