Hi, I have checked the international version you shared. However, there is no firmware for Q16. Can i use the firmware for Q5? Since it is similar specs to Q16 except for the harddisk space

Q16 is China only...i too have this...

I wouldn't if I were you. Himedia even have separate firmware for emmc vs non-emmc... I wouldn't wanna try my luck.

u definitely want to get the latest for q16 -3.0.4.

"full media launcher" - is this the native "mango" launcher or something else?

after every update, u need to reset the default launcher within the settings of the launcher of yr choice, e.g. apex.
for that, yes, minix or some other may be a better choice.

however, the one critical feature i stick to himedia is it comes with an excellent native player with great video and audio output capabilities - mini bluray menu, dtshdma/ddtruehd/ddatmos. can't do with less if using a home theater system. not sure, but i read some people saying minix does NOT have a native player, need to playback usb via kodi only. if true, it sucks big time for me.
*
"Full media launcher" is not the default launcher. The app was already pre-loaded for me when I bought the box. It is an IPTV for china channels (it includes CCTV, Hunan TV and loads of others China tv stations that I can't read). TBH it is absolutely amazing, but problem is, I can't read chinese..lol. ATM small issue for me since i just need to exit the app whenever it launches.

i believe Q16 is "outside china" only.

it is not sold in china becos it uses int'l firwmare, has google stuff.

the firmwares are given to int'l sellers only, i think.

ah... i have an idea what u r talk about now.

quite sure it is HDP or TVplus2.0.

yes, it hijacks the launcher after some update, have seen it.

as explained, just can launch yr own launcher, reset the default, that's it.

if too annoying, remove the app, reinstall, should be ok too.

probably q16 was subsequently sold in china but only with china firmwares, w/o google as by china rule.

our int'l models need to work with int'l firmware.

Q16 quad core CV100 already in the market 2 years +, latest firmware is 304. Every OS upgrade require thousands of test cycles not including coding modification. I do not think Himedia will invest the effort for the device released two years ago.

Q16 CV100 originally designed for Hong Kong market, therefore the firmware come with Google Play Store. In 2016, Q16 CV200 released for China market as Q16 4th generation, the firmware do not have google play because Google is not allow in China. Please don't confused between Q16 CV100 and Q16CV200, both are different chipset. I'm not sure what is the impact if you apply CV200 firmware to CV100 chipset as CV200 is 64 bits and CV100 is 32bit chipset.

FYI... Minix does have native player(s) and more importantly, a made specifically for its hardware-firmware combo... a customized Kodi app that works flawlessly. Also of the audio formats listed above, AFAIK, only Atmos or DTS:X is unsupported via passthrough methods. Kodi's UI, usage and features are far superior.

Best of all... one does not need to hunt high and low for its firmware.. All clearly labeled in ENGLISH on their official website and forum... biggrin.gif

actually, users like you and me probably can handle just about any box for most purposes.

but we know it can be frustrating for a noob.

e.g. factory reset is sometimes necessary but one must hv kept app backups, reinstall, redo all preferences.

plus, there can be other issues with TV, AVR, cables, routers! laugh.gif

so, it is impt box manufacturers make easy-to-use boxes, least hassle, adequate support.

of course, that won't come cheap, hence the price premiums for some boxes besides just the tech specs.

I completely agree... As you've mentioned (and i don't blame the manufacturers), those features must come at a heavier price and its much harder today, as there are tons of "no-name" boxes out there with half-baked firmwares, selling for cheap.. The average user isn't familiar with what to look for or avoid and simply buys based on cheaper is good mentality.. Oh well, the Nvidia Shield TV 2 has been announced.. Beast got meaner... brows.gif
