I have been working with this blog for almost 1 ½ years. After lots of interaction and discussion, by far the most intense discussions lately were around XperiaTM X10 Android upgrades. We earlier stated that we did not have plans for further upgrade of the XperiaTM X10 beyond Android 2.1 Éclair, which was correct at the time.

However, I am happy to inform you that this has changed. We plan to bring an upgrade to Android Gingerbread for the XperiaTM X10 to generic trade kits end Q2 / early Q3 this year. We have heard your requests all along but until today have not been able to confirm this. The great work on our 2011 products XperiaTM PLAY, XperiaTM arc and XperiaTM neo actually has enabled us to start the work in a special project bringing Gingerbread to the XperiaTM X10.

I believe this is good news to many of you out there and I am sure you have many questions around this. I’ve tried to list answers to the ones that came to my mind below. More details will come closer to launch but let me know in the comments section if I missed any questions. I’ll do my very best to find out and follow-up!

Official Procedure to Update
1. Install SE PC Companion 2.0 on your PC.
2. Connect your phone via USB and PC Companion should detect your phone.
3. Click Start below “Support Zone”, then Start below “Software Update” and just follow the instructions. Wait for it to complete.
4. Once the update has succeeded, in your phone go to Settings>About Phone. Make sure it is “Build Number: 2.1.A.0.435”.
**If update was not successful, this means you’ll have to flash using Flashtool 0.2.9.1 instructions below**

Unofficial Procedure
Warning!: You maybe will lose your warranty. But it’s the official firmware.
1. Unpack Flashtool 0.2.9.1 After that unpack the X10i Global Generic 2.1.A.0.435 Firmware into the “firmwares” folder of the Flashtool 0.2.9.1 folder.
2. Now go to your phone Settings>Applications and Tick “Unknown Sources”, then go into Development tick “USB debugging”. Do not connect your phone to the PC yet.
3. Right Click on X10FlashTool.exe and Run as Administrator. Click “Flash”, note that it will show you the Version of the firmware, and then click “OK”.
4. You should see in the Flashtool window stating “INFO – Preparing files for flashing” wait until it prompts you to connect your Phone to the PC with instructions.
5. To connect do the following:
i. Power off the device
ii. Press the back button and hold it
iii. Plug the USB cable
6. Wait for it and follow its instructions on when to boot your phone.
7. Once the phone has booted, in your phone go to Settings>About Phone. Make sure it is “Build Number: 2.1.A.0.435”.


Outcome: You have yourself the latest SE 2.1 Firmware.

Rooting your Phone
Warning: You will lose your warranty.
1. Now go to your phone Settings>Applications and Tick “Unknown Sources”, then go into Development tick “USB debugging”.
2. Go to your Flashtool 0.2.8 Folder.
3. Right Click on X10FlashTool.exe and Run as Administrator.
4. Connect your phone to the PC via USB. If anything prompts you on the screen, just tap “Charge Phone”.
5. Now look at the X10FlashTool.exe window and click “Root”, it will show what it does in the window and will reboot your phone once it is done.
[Just follow the instructions from the Flashtool].

Outcome: Congratulations you have just rooted your phone.

Installing xRecovery
1. Now with your phone still connected to the PC.
2. Look at X10Flashtool.exe window and click “Ask Root Perms”.
3. Superuser will be prompted on your screen. Accept it.
4. Now click 'xRecovery' and it will install xRecovery.
[Just follow the instructions from the Flashtool].
5. After reboot. Turn off the phone. Then turn it on, keep tapping the “Back” button on your phone at the Sony Ericsson splash screen. It should boot to xRecovery.
6. Use the volume buttons [+][-] to go up and down. Back Key to go Back. Middle Key to Enter.

Outcome: You have installed xRecovery on your phone.

Installing xRecovery

Installing JIT V2
1. Using Flashtool, click "Ask Root Perms" then click "Optimize".
2. After completion, the phone should reboot.

Outcome: After this you should notice slightly faster boot up and Quadrant score would be around 7XX.

Installing Sysctl Config
1. Download the application "Sysctl Config" (without " ") from Android Market.
2. Then launch Sysctl Config, tick Sysctl Support and key in the following values for each settings.

3. Then reboot the phone.

Outcome: Increase performance and battery life.

Replacing Stock Launcher to 3rd Party Launcher
This is because the stock launcher seems a bit slow/laggy. There’s some launcher in the market available for free. I’ve used LauncherPro and ADW Launcher. In this guide I will only show the installation on LauncherPro since I find it easier to use and most importantly it’s FAST!
1. Go to Market, download Home Switcher and download LauncherPro Free.
2. Launch Home Switcher and you can select which launcher to be set as default. [Same method with ADW Launcher and other launchers]

Outcome: Much faster launcher than stock launcher.
