Try to avoid it if possible. Weight gain is my main issue, 5-8 kg after I took it. My family doctor recommend me to stop.

QUOTE(Katusha @ Apr 7 2013, 02:18 PM)
Hi there..
Actually I'm still new to this forum and found this thread today  smile.gif

I'm quite concern for those who are constantly taking hormonal contraceptive medications.

I will not tell or share anything beyond my knowledge and experience.
I'm 27 now. two years ago I got married and of coz became sexually active  tongue.gif
That was my first time taking contraceptive pills. I think for about 2 months.

Then I started to gain weight and having skin problems (like tinea/ringworms/panau) around my arms and back. I thought I got it because I ride motorbike a lot and sweat under my riding jacket. I used cream, special soap and did many things to cure them. even I was prescribed with a strongest antibiotics for ringworm. but nothing seemed to clear them from my skin.

I never thought the pill was the culprit. Until I day, I have decided to have an IUD because I don't want to rely on pills anymore.
During the consultation with my doctor, I revealed that my mom had cancer (she passed away on 2010).
Then the doctor advised me to STOP taking any hormonal pill or medication.
I have a family history of cancer and I have the genetic so I must avoid anything that could do something to my hormone.
and it was revealed too that what I had with my skin was because the contraceptive pills had altered my hormone and antibody.

Then after that, due to doctor's concern, I was advised to undergo ultrasound and some tests. Thank God, other than the skin problem, I was fine.

Before I meet my doctor, I read a lot about IUD. (u can search in internet) and surprisingly they are so cheap in malaysia. about 300 including consultation and insertion and everything. while it can cost thousands in overseas.
Then doc suggested me Multi load IUD.
It took less than 5 minute to insert and I can remove it anytime I want.
So far I'm fine with it and I always wanted to encourage ladies out there to go for better contraceptive methods.

Hurm...my point is actually..girls, it is always, always better to avoid stuff than can alter or affect your hormone. Especially if you have family history of cancer. Yes, pills are easier but think in the long run.

Just my 2 cents
*
Please don't assume that what happens to you, will happen to everyone else. It is not one size fits all. What works for you, does not necessarily work for someone else. I know women whose bodies rejected the IUD, with excruciating pain and a lot of bleeding. Others are happier taking the pill daily. The IUD is a more EFFECTIVE birth control method, but you cannot say that it is BETTER just because it worked better for you, especially if it is only in terms of peace of mind since you appear to be afraid of hormones. Your fear is warranted though, based on your personal experience.

Cancer's cause is unknown. Your doctor was giving you his diagnosis based on what he knows with your medical history. He can only say you are of "higher risk", based on family history. I was prescribed pills by US doctors (because I asked for the pill method, though I am considering other methods) even with a history of ovarian cancer in my family. There are people who smoke cigarettes all their lives and never get lung cancer, yet there are others who do recreational smoking and contract lung cancer.

Your advice seems to be quite common of Malaysian women, most of whom fear anything hormonal, and also seem to think that "if it happened to me, it must happen to everyone else". I've been on the pill for 2 years now, stacking (I don't take the break in between packs), and I've never had the skin problems you document having within 2 months of the pill. I also have not gained weight. However, I'm aware that my case is unique from others, and while I tell others what pill I'm on when they ask, I generally don't recommend it just because I don't know what their reactions to it will be. I usually offer it as an option, based on my favorable experience of it.

By all means, do your research and figure out which method is best for you, but always remember that what may be best for you, may not be best for another.

P.S. I just looked this up on womenshealth.gov. One of the side effects/risks of the IUD is infertility. Interestingly enough, it is not a side effect of the pill.
Please be careful, especially if you're inserting and removing it as and when you please.

You could have tried another pill brand, or even another method.

I am PMed occasionally by people, men and women, asking me for pill brand recommendations. I cannot recommend a brand, because every woman reacts differently to different pills. You have to find what works best for you.

Hi Katusha, your intention is good for sharing what had happened to you and I'm sorry to hear about your complications. However as what Spunkberry said, the side effects vary from one individual to another.

Some people said that pills cause them infertility without providing their medical history. They might have infertility before they consumed pills. Take a look at your menstrual cycle. Some have regular, some irregular, some people have their menses once in 6 months. Same goes to hormones in our body.

Like myself, I have more body hairs, back acne, and regular menses. My hormones will not be the same as my sister or any other person. I've taken pills for two months and back acne reduced, body hair still the same (I wish to slow the growth smile.gif ) menses still regular, emotional swings everyday, body weight still the same as no significant increase. What I'm trying to say here is what might work for you possibly will not work for others.

Pills are safe same with IUDs. What you girls need to do is know your body well. Take note of changes, examine all little details that you might overlook. Take closer look at your menses (the heaviness of flow, color, duration, symptoms, PMSes, etc). Take crash course of biology with google. Consult gynecologist and you can also visit any clinics that offer services for women's health.

I am recently taking Yaz 28 and it is still the first out of 3 packs. It's not for the sake of birth control but recommended by my Gynea doc which i complaint that i have severe menstrual pain in these recent years. It is suspected that i am having Endometriosis and being precribed 3 packs of Yaz 28.

I have started the first pack on my first day period as told by the Gynea doc and it fell on Thursday. After tomolo, i will be starting to take the inactive pill.

Here's my concern:
Usually i have 7 days of menstruation. After the first day of my period (first day of taking Yaz) until now, i am experiencing bleeding. Of course for the first 7 days it was like an usual menstruation, nothing much different with the common cycle. Anyway, light bleeding continued afterwards. Is it normal for ahving the so called "Breakthrough Bleeding" for such a long time non-stop?

Also, i am experiencing breast tenderness recently, just happened for a week plus. It's pain even if i touched it politely. Is that normal too?

I lost appetite, feel tired easily and having shoulder pain, backache and headache.

Are all these side effects of taking Yaz?

I'm experiencing the same thing when I took Yaz (minus the lost appetite part). Now I'm trying Diane 35 but Pharmacist told me this brand is now restricted due to several complaints from customers in US.

Why would you changed to Diane?

I was thinking to finish the 3 packs given. Thinking by the time i finished all, i guess all the side effects would go away???

Because I got pimples on the forehead and jaw when I took Yazmin. Then decided to change to Diane to get beautiful skin on my wedding day. Now the reception is over and I want to see gynea on the best contraceptive for me (i am thinking to do implants and hormone shots).

The side effects would go away once your body and the hormones can regulate systematically (I guess). Because before we take pills the hormones have their own pace and settings, when we consume the pills, some hormone will increase while other decrease (vice versa). It all depends on individual and the kind of pills they consume.

I guessed i used to the side effects that i mentioned earlier. It does exist but i do not feel that suffer compared to the first few weeks after taking Yaz.

Anyway, another problem rose. I missed my pink pills for 3 consecutive days and i take it back on the 4th day like usual. It was the second pack, pill 11th to 13th. Which means I did not do anything with the 3 missed pills, i just leave it there and took the 14th pill. Also, during the 3 days that i missed the pills, without the hormone to give signal to my body, the period came again. It was just about 7-10 days after my normal cycle.

Now, i am having the 23rd pill, meaning that the day after tomorrow i should take the inactive white pill for the period come. I tried to call my gynae doctor but she's on long leave.

What should i do? Should i skip the white pill and take the 3 missed pink pills as replacement then continue with a new pack like usual? or should i take the white pill and let it period (it would be the 3rd time period in a month time)?

Like i said, the purpose i took the pill with the doctor's advise to cure my severe pain during mentrual period and also to prevent the disease of endometriosis which the doctor suspected it to be, but not for birth control.

Also to share a little bit after one and a half month of taking Yaz.

Like i shared earlier after the first day of my period of taking Yaz, i experienced light bleeding continuously even after my normal menstrual cycle. Then it continued until i started on the inactive white pill. Here it started the second mentrual cycle after taking Yaz. It was found that the period is not that heavy compared to my previous one before trying on Yaz and the mentrual pain has reduced to a level that i nearly could not feel the pain but just a little not comfortable on the stomach. About after 5days, the period stopped and surprisingly that the light bleeding also went away and did not return until i missed the 3 pink pills. Period came back on the 2nd day i missed the pink pill and the flow is quite heavy on the first 3 days. After 3 days of missing the pink pills, i took it back on the 4th day as usual. The flow reduce obviously only on the 4th day of my period (which is on the 2nd day i took back the pink pill) and it stopped on the 6th day of the period cycle. This time it was same as last time during my mentrual cycle that it doesn't hurt but only little not comfortable on the stomach, even the flow is heavier. And finally after the period, no more light bleeding until now.

I was told that having light bleeding is common for those who takes Yaz for the first time and usually happen only on the first month.

Hope this would help to those girls who experiencing the same with me.

Also hope that someone knowledgable could provide me some advises while waiting for my gynae doctor to come back from her long leave.

Thanks.

Just some sharing after talking to my gynae doctor.

She asked me to finish all the pink pills left in the second pack and since i have already taken the first missed pill (11th pill that i missed) as the replacement for the first white pill that i am supposed to take yesterday, i was advised to finish the leftover 2 missed pills (12th and 13th pill) on today and tomorrow then start with the third pack of Yaz disregard of the 4 white inactive pill (in which i already have my period during the 3 days of my missed pills).

Another advise from the doctor, extra protection is required for the next 7 days after the last missed pills.

Depends on which type of pills you're on. I'm on Marvelon pills for almost a year now. Having it because of my period problems. So far, not much problem to me except sometimes, you'll get nausea in the mornings. Anyway, it depends on your body as well. Marvelon's the safest pill you can find in Malaysia. Have regular body check if you're that worried.

there are only three types of pills. alcohol does not affect effectiveness. Only human error does.

When I first started I was on Cerazette. GP didn't want to prescribe me with the combination pills because I have frequent migranes. Cerazette was horrible - I had terrible mood swings (my poor boyfriend got the brunt of it tongue.gif) and I was spotting everyday for more than a month. Then I changed to Noriday. So far no adverse side effects although I still bleed every month on it... Although I'm not sure if my weight gain is due to Noriday so I'm thinking of stopping it for a month (it's summer holidays now so I won't see my boy until September) and starting it again a few weeks before I'm due to fly back to the UK. My question is: If I start my pills again not on the first or fifth day of my cycle, how long do I have to use condoms for? Here you said 7 days but my instruction leaflet said two days is sufficient. I just want to make sure so I can time my pill taking right.

Also, how did anyone parents react when they found out that you became active? My mum blew up like a volcano after she found out that I was active with my LONG TERM boyfriend.. When I tried to reassure her that no, I won't get pregnant because I was using condoms and the pills as well it was as if WWIII broke out... She kept saying how I have disappointed her and where did she go wrong with raising me etc. by taking those vile medication because I will be rendered infertile and it will mess up my body and told me to stop taking it and stop having sex immediately sweat.gif I swear she wants me to end up preggers because relying on condoms is far far more unreliable than the pills and I don't even pay a single cent for contraceptives because it's free in the UK! Gosh! Any ideas on how to deal with her?

And yes, I do agree that Malaysians should be educated on BC matters. If society was different my mum wouldn't react like what she did. Before I went to the UK, I did not even know that BC could control acne breakouts or regulate PMT. Of all BC, I think condoms are the most inefficient method and yet it's more accepted than pills. Don't even get me started trying to explain the patch/injection to my mum because I think I'll get disowned lol..

Condoms have a 97% rate, compared to the pill's 99%. These numbers do not take into account human error. So no, condoms are not far less reliable. You just have to be proactive in checking for leakages so you are able to get the Plan B pill in case there are problems. The pill is the same - if you don't take it at exactly the same time every day, you are also at risk. Condoms don't affect your hormones, that's why people prefer it. Penakut, that's all.

My parents never found out. I don't even know why you told her or how she was even able to find out if you didn't say anything. Your sex life is none of anybody else's business.

Ah okay. Well it was partly my fault as my mum kept bugging me if I had done it with my boyfriend. One day I got so frustrated and I just said yes. It seems to my mum that my sex life is her business :/

I'm 24 and I've been on BCP for a couple of years and I'm not pregnant so I can say it's definitely effective (HAHA!).

Anyway, my first pill was Yasmin. It made my skin great and I think I may have lost a little weight but it made me kinda tired and down all the time. Sex drive became non-existent. I was on this for more than 6 months then I decided to switch to a lower estrogen pill because I read somewhere it would improve my moods.

I was on Mercilon for a while(can't remember how long exactly) and while it didn't have all the negative side effects of Yasmin, my skin wasn't spectacular. I didn't feel tired and that was really good. After a while I started breaking out so I decided to switch to something which would improve my skin.

So now I'm on Diane. I'm quite happy with this. My skin is good, I don't feel down/tired like when I was on Yasmin. Also doesn't kill my sex drive like Yasmin did. I may have put on a little weight, not very noticeable but it could be due to my new lifestyle(working in the office eating out a lot not much movement).

I guess my experience with BCP is positive unlike all the negatives I've read(people only seem to post negative reviews). I'd recommend girls to go on it because your body is your responsibility, not the person you're sleeping with. Mistakes happen and if your bf gets you pregnant, unless you believe in abortion, you're trapped for life. I think a lot of people take this too lightly.

My advise would be to try different pills with different dosages until you get the right one for you. Might take a while(I made sure I used the pill for 3 months before switching) but it's worth it.

Hi, my girlfriend is going to change pills and we are living in Malaysia now. In my country her doc offered due to analysis, Chloe or Silhoutte. I wonder which one is more accessible here in Malaysia and where to find if so. Any suggestions?! Thank you all.
