if you are asking about the SSM/USM in lenses, then YES,they are faster & more quiet than screw driven lenses. For SAM,I feel the AF speed is same or sometimes lower than screw-driven  tongue.gif  Sometimes depends on the lens also,my tamron 17-50 f2.8 is much faster than SAL1870  biggrin.gif

Hmm. You comparing the 1750 with the 1870? hmm.gif You mean the 1870 no motor in lens? shocking.gif

Yea, SAL1870 has no motor in lens. The new 1855SAM kit lens has the SAM motor in its lens

doesnt matter anyway since all alpha bodies are screw drive lens compatible... there's no big issue about it.. unlike Nikon's entry level bodies, which only support lenses with in-lens motor

the reason the tamron 1750 is fast, because its F2.8. not the lens F2.8 but the aperture is wide open at F2.8 during AF, which give more light = better reading, so the camera can ask the lens to go faster.

try using 1855SAM, 1870(screwdriven) and 1750(screw driven) at day light, all three cant tell the speed diff. but once night, the darker F3.5-F5.6 lens surely will suddenly become tikus and go slower.... it happen on 70200G vs 70300G, the 70200F still go at faster speed at night compare to the 70300F @ 200mm F5.6 on the same body.

so the aperture of the lens does affect the speed, like how my tammy is faster then 1680cz at night.

i got 2 unit 1870, still using... 2 years already both. working fine. my friend using A200 for 2 years, the lens still fine.

reason of the stripping is that i notice a lot ppl open close the hood, without "release to MF" putting stress in the gear with the motor engaged.

another nightmare is when i pass my camera to another friend to take a pic, when he zoom, he turns the focus ring instead of the zoom ring and your heart suddenly sinks on the spot! O_o *the horrorrrrrr*

Question, so will the focusing speed of the 70200G with the 70300G be the same if both aperatures are the same at f5.6??? hmm.gif
