I don't know about the son much, but he was trained in India Calvary Division,
Johore Sultanate is the cheif of the Commando, so maybe that make the crown prince eligible to wear the green beret.

The current Sultan of Johore is train with the US navy, but I'm not sure if he is Navy Seal trained like his late father the previous Sultan of Johore, he then trained with the Ranger Air Borne in Fayetteville North Carolina

Training (weapons, tactics, etc) is one of the phases to become a commando. My gripe is that these "VIPs" would usually bypass the first phase of becoming one, which is the selection process.

They would proceed straight to advanced training without the need to prove themselves worthy to partake said training.

I don't care if your daddy is the Sultan. If you don't prove yourself by going through all the phases including the much dreaded selection phase like all the commandos before you, you should not be worthy to wear the beret.

Take the SAS for example. They made Prince William an honorary member (due to the fact that he will become the future King) and he will be wearing the sand beret only for ceremonial occasions. However, he was not given the SAS wings because he did not go through all steps required to become an SAS trooper.

Do we have similar practices here?

ic, the selection
unfortunately not for most of the young prince nowadays!

for the Johore royal, I can recall that the second prince went to the normal selection for PUTD!

I know this is not about who is who, but I have the urge to drop my comment just to get the fact straight here - as I think both of you are talking about the different sons.

I've never been a fan of the whole "honorary beret" they keep bestowing to VIPs. If you want it, go through the course and earn it.

I've read recently that the Sultan Johor's son was bestowed the beret because he participated and passed the Special Forces Specialist course. That's fine, but he clearly did not go through the commando selection process, where most candidates will drop out.

The selection process is vital because it separates the wannabe wankers from the ones who really, really want the honor of wearing the green beret. It's what makes a commando, well, a commando.
*
The recent one who passed the Special Forces Specialist course is the fifth son - Tunku Abdul Rahman.

The one serving as a Captain in Indian Army is the first son, Crown Prince - Tunku Ismail.

And the current Sultan of Johore, Sultan Ibrahim - yes, he received military training in Fort Benning and Fort Bragg. Like his late father, Sultan Iskandar? I am not sure of that - think not.

By the way, regarding whether the prince go through the selection process like others or not - could only be confirmed by those who slide him in - well if that's the case.

Usually in army you will be awarded this when you have at least serve in one operation, the operation can be in jungle, sea or any kind of official military ops!

Ya, is this one... oh okay, thanks a lot for the info. Coz I saw almost every uniformed ppl including polis also seem to have it...

One worst, I think I saw a old pak guard at one building wearing the ribbon bar for this PPA.. Heard rumours that he was ex-polis or ex-army but not sure.

Wow, got custom box summore. haha.

Is it possible for civil servant or normal civillian to be award with this medal?

Hastened? The replacement program had been in the works for awhile la bro. Even the Chinese J-10 was on the initial list. Thats why on the shortlist already got Typhoon, Rafale, F18F, SU-35, JAS39...

The postponement was purely bcoz theres not enough money or diverted to other procurement, namely the SGPV..

In military usually you will be given medal and ribbon if you went to official operation.
you can see the army that went to Bosnia, Namibia, Lebanon will get the ribbon.

well for other government service you can get PJK, AMN and so on, but I don't really know how you're going to get this!

haha.. dunno.. so far on mudah hv a few PPA medal on sale be4. but... unlike others country where there is military surplus store or militaria collector store where they do sell old medals which are genuine ones. unfortunately Malaysia have Al-Maunah Case which make the sales of local military insignia tightly regulated, this is wat I heard from some old-timer veteran tat i met in a coin and stamps collector store...

the shortlist means that particular aircraft is deemed suitable for the requirement.doesn't mean the government gonna buy it straight away

SGPV has it's own budget, anything has it's own budget

PICTURES: Hornets, Typhoons join Malaysian exercise

Eurofighter Typhoons from the Royal Air Force's 6 Sqn have joined aircraft from four other nations in Malaysia for exercise "Bersama Lima 2011".

The Royal Australian Air Force sent Boeing F/A-18A fighters and a 737-based Wedgetail airborne early warning and control system aircraft to participate in the manoeuvres that are being conducted from Butterworth air base in Penang.

The UK is leading efforts to promote the Typhoon to Kuala Lumpur, which has identified a need to replace its MiG-29s that have become increasingly expensive to support.

The topic is likely to be high on the agenda at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition, which will take place in early December. Other candidates could include the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
