Under Sandet/Land of mine - The aftermath of war you don't see.

Upfront this is a powerful drama that looked at the consequence of war. POW of Hitler youth being forced to clear mines that left at the shoreline of Denmark. The first ten minutes will have you on the edge as you witness racism of the first degree and kids taking turns to demonstrate how to diffuse a mine enough to give you a heart attack. It's a story of the hard assed sergeant being tasked to lead the boys as tension and danger creeps it everytime the sweep the beach. Once they get to know each other, a powerful human connection story unfolds.
Dunkirk will vow you with big budgets and spectacle, this one will resonate with you and reward you with an emotional satisfaction when the film ends. Officially released in 2015 but got picked up by US last year and was nominated at the Oscar best foreign film.

Baby Driver (2017)

Imagine this.

The lights dim.

The movie you had bought a ticket to watched is not projected, just yet...

What you are watched instead are short snippets of movies to come.

I think I was watching either War Of The Planet Of The Apes or Valerian The City of a Thousand Planets (*Groan*) and the trailer for this movie played (Probably War).

As I was Watching it, I was actually intrigued!!!

But in the back of my mind, I told my self, "Ah... all the best bits are shown, don't think the movie will live up to the trailer (Yes, I have been burnt).

Now after the debacle called Valerian, I heard whispers that this is actually a decent movie, and I waited until Wednesday (cheaper tickets) to dip my toe into the pool called, Baby Driver.

And Boy am I glad I did!!

Cast is great.

Story is great

And the director, Edgar Wright, delivered!!!

Oh, did I mention, casting is GREAT!!!!

Talk about casting... Who would have thought Mr. Placid (did you SEE him in Divergent 2014???!) himself, Ansel Elgort, can be so... versatile!!!

Alot rested on his shoulders (Kevin Spacey and Jon Hamm are in this, for Pete's sake!!!) and he carried the weight of the movie and then some!!

And the chemistry between him and Lily James!!!! Wow!!!!

And the script.

If you want to watch a good movie, go watch this.

My Two Sen.

The Salesman (Persian) - 7.6/10
Wow this Iran drama movie is quite suspenseful and good. Very mature film and provocative. Thanks GSC for screening this. If you liked previous Asghar Farhadi's movies no exception for this one. Great screenplay throughout the movie with comfort pace. Great performances. Good sound mixing. Movie went intense near the end. In the end, you choose to tell... or not to tell? Very well written very well shot and very well delivered. If you are a movie buff, you have(must) to experience this.

Nibunan (Tamil) - 7/10
About a cop(Arjun) and his 2 subordinates hunting a psychotic serial killer, whose murder patterns and method are always so flawless and ironclad. This is a mind game movie where the psychotic killer purposely left clues for the cops. Fast paced and engaging keeps you hooked. Background score is loud and good. Movie is violent but also with cuts during torture scenes. Movie however is less action more on thriller. The best part of this film where the cops solves the mystery of the clue given. Even so the final stage also setup by the psychotic killer. Poster indicated this is Arjun's 150th film, an action king haha.

Vikram Vedha (Tamil) - 7.8/10
Whoa what was I just watched? A honest(really?) cop Vikram vs notorious gangster leader Vedha. Movie starts with big gap between them until Vedha made his first grand entrance at police station and tell his first story. As the plot unfolded the gap closes. The climax is the best part of this movie where the twist turns the tide. For a serious movie like this it is surprisingly have many witty and funny dialogues especially from Vedha. There's a lot to say about this movie but wall of text is not my thing. A smart and enjoyable movie.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)

Apparently this movie went through a name change since it was first announced...

Hello

HELLO??

Did anyone watched this at all?? laugh.gif

Well, Guy Ritchie actually directed two box office bombs in a row....

He had not performed so badly as a director, this his marriage to Madonna!!! tongue.gif

Okay, truth to be told, I actually kinda like this.

It is not the "REGAL" Arthur we are used to.

It ask the question, what if Arthur, an orphan, was brought up, in a.... Brothel!!!

Will his leadership quality "flow through"?

Quite beautifully filmed.

A "Guy Ritcher" treatment script

And the direction was pretty good.

I am not quite sure what the critics had against this.

It was, fun, different and take chances with a pretty familiar story/movie.

Anyway, that's my two sen.

The Dark Tower (Eng) - 5/10
An underbudgeted film. Felt short. No good.

The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One (Eng) - 2/10
Very bad movie. Felt like tortured at theater. Endure endure and endure finally credit rolls.

Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry <劇場版 フェアリーテイル -DRAGON CRY-> (Jap) - 6/10
This is for those who watched Fairy Tail TV 277 episodes. You knew you will watch this. But movie just mediocre for a side quest.

Napping Princess <ひるね姫 〜知らないワタシの物語〜> (Jap) - 6.5/10
Finally a decent movie for this weekend. From the director of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. This is his weakest work yet but still enjoyable.

Actually... Clint Eastwood had done it before... (The Beguiled (1971))

I believe Stephen King borrowed a page from the book The Beguiled, for Misery.... tongue.gif

Would be interesting to compare the two different version (Sophia and Clint's)....

We shall see...

Atomic Blonde (2017)

First and foremost, I am NOT familiar with the graphic material.

Which means, I am NOT familiar with the source material.

If I make any comments here that indicates the above, and is rubbing your knowledge of the subject matter the wrong way, allow me to apologies, beforehand.

The cast in this movie is... pretty good.

Why isn't Charlize Theron Sarah Connor's in one form or another!!!! tongue.gif

Just the staircase scene alone....

But I am jumping ahead of myself.

First things first, this is an Action Thriller.

An unknown actor Sam Hargrave (James Gasciogne) kinda stole the movie for me.

He was in plenty of big movies, and have to add, as a stunt person, and here, he is kinda the first person you see, at the beginning of the movie.

Is he going to be BIG, only time will tell.

As the title suggest, Charlize Theron character is the lead, Lorraine Broughton, and truth to be told, you cannot say that the script did not give her things to do...

On THAT note, I wish the film distributor had been more... careful with the "cuts".

Alot of times, I find myself trying to figure out the "empty slots" rather then watching the movie.

Another reason why people would go watch this movie is James McAvoy (David Percival). How Arthurian.

The only sore thumb in terms of casting is Sofia Boutella (Delphine Lasalle)... There is something "off" about her? Is that what they want for the character?

Movie that place in Germany, the days leading up to the fall of The Wall. (Maybe they should have hold off from THAT and sold The Wall to President Trump instead. They would have made a bundle....).

So, the conclusion is?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

My take, I think the distributors did this movie a discredit with the "snip, snip".

As Always.

My Two Sen.

The Dark Tower (2017)

Well, the effort that was spent getting this book made into a movie.

It was on again, off again for a while, and we finally get to see the finished product and it is.... decent.

I do have to say, technically this is NOT a horror movie.

I know the story does not end here, I remember the reason why the previous attempts to make this movie failed because the three planned movies' budget were supposedly off the chart...

Now, having said that, according to IMDB, the budget for this movie, USD $66,000,000 (estimated). It is not "HEY I AM BIG BUDGET" by Hollywood standards, and have to add, it is not something to sneer at as well.

The production is decent.

And direction is decent.

Cast is... decent.

I do have one complain though... Not sure that Matthew McConaughey is the best Man in Black choice...

The character needed a more.... "insane, genius, congenial and serial killer" threads.... Not so sure that Matthew McConaughey accomplished that...

With Stephen King (not that I am a big fan, though I do like The Shining (1980) movie), a prolific writer, I get a feel that they might just do a "shared universe" with his works in the movie, if this movie make enough, dough.

So, if they do proceed to make Part 2, would I consider watching it?

Well, I do not think what I say here would impact the powers that be to proceed with the second movie, and have to add, based on this movie, I would watch that.

Like Always
