Skiptrace 2016

To my surprise, Skiptrace is good. I love the chemistry between Jackie and Johnny Knoxville. I like the way they travel from Russian to HK

The movie starts good at the beginning, however, the ending kinda disappointing.

3.5/5

i recommend this movie.

Jason Bourne (2016)

Two words : SHAKY CAM.

Yup. That ruined it for me. So shaky you can't even see what is what and who is hitting who. Just plenty of action but no real impact, much like the plot. You can safely give this a miss.

Ratings : 2 out of 5 stars

Star Trek : Beyond (2016)

A fun movie. Gives you a feel that it is a long episode of the 70's TV series. Not that it's bad but it's just an episode in the series or franchise. Not one you'll really remember but far from being the worst.

Ratings : 3 out of 5 stars

Lights Out (2016)

Have you heard of the saying, ignorance is bliss?

Well, when it comes to this movie, it sure is.

I knew very little about this movie going in. Just based on word of mouth really and...

I like IT!!!

Warner Brothers is currently definitely the King of horror (Shame on you Paramount).

Having said that with the newly minted Mummy/Dracula/Frankenstein movies Paramount had planned (and produced by Mr Tom Cruise), starting 2017, that may change.

Back to the movie, having no expectations, I enjoyed the movie immensely.

The concept is fresh though not new (if you are an avid Youtuber, you probably seen something very similar).

Some people had mention that this is as good as if not better compared with The Conjuring 2 (2016)...

I personally will not go so far. It is definitely better compared with Demonic (2015) and at best it is at par with Deliver Us from Evil (2014).

Good job, Warners, for now.

Suicide Squad (2016)

The cinematography is fine. The cast is doing the best they could. The SFX is good. All seems well but something is very obviously missing and the missing ingredient is affecting the movie greatly.

DC has to really get it together. If you don't know yet, the missing vital ingredient is a good story to wrap the cast, cinematography and SFX around.

Off the bat, Suicide Squad is better than Batman v Superman but it still suffers from a weak plot.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie are great to watch but the story falls apart after the character intro.

Whatever this review says, people will still go watch this. It's fine to kill a couple of hours but I don't think this is the magic bullet Warner Bros and DC is hoping for.

Rating : 2.5 stars out of 5

Suicide Squad (2016)

In 2008, Marvel Studios released Iron Man. One of their B characters (at that point all of Marvel's A characters had been licensed out).

Marvel, Stan Winston Studio and ILM made the impossible, possible (Tony Stark in the Iron Man suit, fly)

When I first watched the trailer, and seeing Iron Man out flying a F18 (I think) I was SOLD!!

At the premier of the movie, the story was right, and Marvel Studio is SET!

Fast forward 8 years and DC Universe....

It is doing a lot of things right.

It basically has a bank (Warner Brothers) behind it.

It attract BIG names to script/direct/act in their projects and yet...

They are having a lot of trouble (with the exception of The Dark Night) making their movies "gel" with the audience.

I think, the success of The Dark Knight success has been a stumbling block for the DC Universe movies (Don't crucify me).

Here is why.

The movies were dark, serious and grounded to reality.

Audiences flocked to the cinemas to watched them. And after that, bought the blurays!!

And everyone at Warners went, oh, so THAT'S selling...

And henceforth that is the "formula" they adhere to...

Case in point Man of Steel. Did it need to be SO "dark". My answer is no....

Then you had Batman vs Superman, which would have been an excellent to elaborate the light and dark aspects of Superman and Batman, and alas, no.... Dark, dark DARK!!

And now, Suicide Squad....

Was never a fan of the comics, and after this movie, still NOT a fan.

To start with, you show us how terrible these "anti-heroes" are, and in the end, we are supposed to like them?...

I really pity Will Smith!

He has SO MANY so-stars and he has the burden of USD $175,000,000 price tag movie all on his shoulders!!!

So did he managed to carry the movie?

No quite...

Okay okay, Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) did some carrying as well, still it think it still falls short...

Story folks, you have to get the story right

I am sorry to say, they again did not get it right here, again...

Here is a DC fan plea, to other DC fans, please please please go watch this.

Let it make some money.

Do not let Warner abandon the DC Universe.

It has SO MUCH POTENTIAL.

Please...

Saw Suicide Squad for free, and regretted it. A terrible, terrible movie by all counts. I struggle to think of any positives - even Harley Quinn was annoying. The Joker was the worse - Jared Leto in ultra try-hard mode and failing. Proves that you really need someone with the right amount of calibre and charm to pull off the Joker.

I fell asleep during the climax. I cannot remember the last time I watched something this bad at the cinema... even Angry Birds was better than this (no, was not my choice to watch).

Kingsglaive : Final Fantasy XV (2016)

So I caught this movie the other day. The Final Fantasy(FF) label caught my eye and the trailer convinced me to get the ticket.
This movie was directed by the same person that directed Final Fantasy VII : Advent Children. That movie was quite good. The last FF movie I caught in the cinema was FF : The Spirits Within. I also liked that one but most people did not.

There are lots of big names in this animated movie. The cast of voice actors include Lena Headey and Sean Bean (yup, that Sean Bean in yet another medieval flick and yes, he is a king that gets iced during the show). But for all that star power Kingsglaive was just OK. For those uninitiated, this movie is one of the parts that will make up the Final Fantasy XV franchise. The game will come out next year and pick up where the movie ended or so I'm told. There is also an anime short series on the net but I haven't seen that one. In short, I am not the movie's target audience.

Briefly, the movie deals with 2 kingdoms; Lucis and Niflheim. Niflheim is the evil empire and goes on a world domination spree. Only Lucis and its capital, Insomnia stands in the way. Lucis is protected by a magical crystal that powers a shield around it. The crystal also grants the king of Lucis, King Regis, magical powers. The king in turn channel this power to the Kingsglaive, a battalion of elite royal guards, to fight for the king.

The movie deals with Nyx Ulric, one of the Glaives, and the events that happen in and around Insomnia. The animation is great to look at. The SFX is also equally well done. The world is a curious mix of modern tech and ancient mystical magic architecture. Everything looks great but the plot feels kind of lacking. I am afraid that the problem that plagues Hollywood is no stranger for Japanese film makers also. When you stop gaping at the big action set pieces and the frantic action, you often find yourself questioning why the characters are doing what they are doing. Sadly, the answers don't quite make sense. This is true especially for Princess Lunafreya, the female lead, of the movie. She is supposed to be the driving force for those who believe in all that is fair and just but her actions are often plain dumb and senseless.

The questions of why she is there in the first place and what actual role she has to play in all the conflict do not get answered satisfactorily at all even when the credits started to roll. And in there is where Kingsglaive as a movie fails.

I guess this one is purely for the fans of the game who intends to play the game.

The Invitation - An ending you don't see coming

It's a slow burn of a thriller that very smartly constructed to keep you guessing that something is terribly wrong with the gathering but you can't really point the finger to who or what. At one point you are sure it's the new husband then it pivot to the ex-wife and it went into lenghty moments of the lead actor who is emotionally deficit over an incident. So the story cleverly showing you one plot point that masquerade the second and even the third one to keep you guessing what is actually going on. Then the ending happens and you will be flabbergasted by not picking up all the subtle hints to what's about to go down before. A recommended watch if you can tolerate slow burning story structure with a strong finishing.

The Shallows (2016)

Paint me surprise that this movie has not already got it's own topic!!

I know I know, the question on everyone's mind is, is this SHARKNADO movie??

I am sorry to say, NO!! laugh.gif

I did a movie marathon yesterday and it is very good.

The audience really gets involved with the lead (Blake Lively).

This movie is considered "low" budget according to Hollywood standards (USD 17,000,000) and has returned in spades (USD 54,000,000).

Why does this work?

Story people, it has a story to tell.

Okay, is the story possible?

No... And have to add both Blake Lively (Lead actor) and Jaume Collet-Serra (director), was able to sell it!!!

And the moral of the story is, never give up!!!

Another moral of the story, make sure you have a water resistant handphone with you AT ALL TIMES!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this.
