Son of Saul - A holocaust drama you've not seen before.

Story of a jewish prisoner/worker in a concentration camp that easily surpass anything you've seen before. The way the atrocity being masked by shallow depth of field photography...does not mean the impact was dampened. Nonchalantly you watched the lead working like a busy bee to usher unsuspected prisoners to a gas chamber execution. From there he recognized one of the young boy and we follow the course of one night in the concentration camp where he need to find a Rabbi to conduct burial ceremony for the boy. It's not one of those preachy story where faith is your temple of salvation or romantic anti-war movie. Just hanging to what humanity left in you in the face of unfathomable sufferings. A well deserved Cannes Grand Prix and Oscar winner.

Such an underrated film. Unlike most post-apocalyptic movies, this is a really nice change of pace. It may be boring at first glance because it really just focuses on the two main characters, who are sisters, trying to survive after a sudden power outage and food/gas shortage. Don't expect zombies or military battles or anything huge like that. I find this unique because it's very character driven, moving and feels personal in a way (especially if you're a girl because there are some scenes where I think only girls will know/understand what it feels like). Amazing and heartfelt performance by both Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood. If not for their engaging and powerful acting, I might not have enjoyed this movie as much. I like how minimalistic it is and yet very surreal. Good cinematography and very touching ost too.

Ending may not make everyone happy. Initially, I thought it was a stupid decision too but on hindsight, it may not be that bad. I think it's bold and a good way to move on for the sisters. Another gripe is that they never explain the power outage but it doesn't really matter for me because sometimes, not everything needs to be explained. Overall I give this a 8/10.

P.S I don't know why but it reminds me of The Last Of Us, minus the adventure/zombies (if you know the game biggrin.gif )

What???

No one had opened a topic for this movie???

Why no love people???....

Okay, what do you get, when you cross Alfred Hitchcock with Akira Kurosawa?

A possible result would be this movie script.

So, in other words, I'll say that script wise it is a mesh between Psycho and Seven Samurai. Correct me if I am wrong.

The idea that Sean Lau (Lau Ching Wan) can use a whip is mind boggling enough.

Eddie Peng had said that since Rise of the Legend (2014) he has been training in martial arts...

Like Keanu Reeves in The Matrix (1999) there is a certain level of "stiffness" to his execution of Kung Fu, and have to add, he seemed more "flexible" here... or have they done a better editing job... laugh.gif

Dancers have a better time "faking" kung fu. Chen Pei Pei and Aaron Kwok comes to mind (I am still blown away by Aaron's performance in The Bare-Footed Kid (1993)).

Having said that, if Aaron do decide to not do Monkey King 3, maybe Eddie Peng can take on the role (if he continues with his practice). But I digress.

I enjoyed this movie.

It does my heart good to see a younger generation of actors taking on the martial art mantel from the like of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung.

It is slightly different from you regular Hong Kong martial art action movie, in that, it does have a story to tell and it tells it well.

The cherry on top of this is Wu Jing, and alas, he is in it too briefly (he is a freaking special guest start!!!)

It does have an issue... namely Louis Koo....

Let me put it this way. His role needs a certain kind of actor to pull it off (eg. Acting chops) and I do not think he is there yet...

If you like kung fu action-er, go for it!

Nerve (2016)

Have any of you watched The Game (1997) (with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn).

Emma Roberts & Dave Franco makes an attractive couple.

This THAT but younger... and Social Media.... and the Internet....

So that's the whole movie in a nutshell. laugh.gif

I found this entertaining...

And also disturbing... (on several levels actually)

The reason is I hope younger viewer can differentiate between art (movie) and real life and not try and emulate anything they see here.

If you like your entertainment, leaning towards Thrillers... this is a good choice.

Midnight Special was tad disappointing to be honest. The first half and buildup are really good, there's that tension and suspense, it's like 10 Cloverfield Lane or Sicario (they're different genre) but you know something huge is gonna happen with the way they film it. So I was getting ready to be mindblown by whatever revelation or twist they're gonna offer, only thing is, I'm left with more questions at the end of it. With such a great buildup the ending just sizzles into nothingness and really make me go confused.gif Michael Shannon is the only thing worth watching, apart from that boy actor. But even the kid with supernatural powers (glowing hands and eyes) doesn't make me empathize him. During the final scene, there's also this Tomorrowland-ish cityscape which I don't like. It left me thinking, why did I waste 2 hours watching this? That being said, it's draggy too. Even 10 Cloverfield Lane had a better ending than this (even though it's really wtf, at least they put in effort). The screenwriter probably didn't know how to wrap this movie up with a satisfying revelation.

Kingsglaive has amazing animation from start to finish, which I feel is the strongest point of the movie. My only gripe is during some action scenes, they are too chaotic and fast-paced that I couldn't really see what's going on. That kept me from truly appreciating the action sequences. Anime like Fate Zero has better fighting scenes lol just saying. Anyways, I like the political plot and the protagonists sacrificing themselves for the greater good of the world (cliche but acceptable). The movie is a good promotion for the game and I feel even if you're not planning to play the game, you'll find something entertaining about it. Can't take my eyes off King Regis lol so handsome.

The Man Who Knew Infinity is a biographical movie about a famous Indian mathematician, Ramanujan portrayed by Dev Patel. I think he really embodied the character and very convincing with his love for mathematics (and belief that they're God's words). "An equation means nothing to me unless it expresses a thought of God". Too bad mathematics has never been my favorite subject so I don't find them as fascinating. I'm waiting for future movies about biologists instead because I think we have tons of movies about physicians and mathematicians already. It's rather slow-paced so patience is needed. I really like the dynamic between both Dev Patel and his professor, played by Jeremy Irons. Love the English accent.

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)

Five syllables here
And seven syllables there
I recite this haiku...
Are you happy?

It looks like haiku, it sounds like haiku... But is it haiku?

Which is exactly how I feel after watching this...

The design is incredible.

It is VERY obvious to anyone who pays attention that alot of thoughts were put into the background & characters design.

From the music (shamisen) to the origami "props", top notch, no argument from me.

The story...

Let's put it this way, go back to the beginning of my review and read the "haiku"... That I think would be how alot of people would feel.

At least, in the Kung Fu Panda series, "Chinese" were consulted.

Here... Check this out

Directed by
Travis Knight ... (directed by)

Writing Credits
Marc Haimes ... (screenplay) and
Chris Butler ... (screenplay)
Shannon Tindle ... (story by) and
Marc Haimes ... (story by)

Not a Jap insight!!!

What the HECK were they thinking...

To top it off Regina Spektor cover version of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Weep", with shamisen accompaniment... during the end credit shocking.gif

They might as well glued feathers on an elephant and called it a Phoenix!!! sweat.gif

Back to the story... The storyline is SO disjointed it is NOT funny, and then the ending...

If you really want to see this, watch it for the aesthetic design, and not the story

Sing Street - Charming trip to 80's nostalgia

You may have seen the familiar coming of age story, Sing Street is so much more than that. Started as a kid trying to impress a girl, it's not just a straight comedy but more of dramedy variety. You meet the nerdiest group of boys who wanted to act grown up. It's full of charming fun and good story telling component. You will laugh, root and even cry with it as the "growing pain" plot progression that prevalent in these types of movie. Do not be misled by the trailer that the music is unpolished, they are very good indeed. A must buy ost and one of the best feel good movie this year. If you do enjoy the movie, you need to track down John Carney amazing debut "Once" as the perfect companion and a spiritual sequel to Sing Street or even Sing Street as the prequel.

The Handmaiden - Park Chan Wook is back in top form.

If you are expecting an exploitative BDSM movie, then you will be disappointed... what you get is a multi layered misdirection plot device that you come to know what type of PCW films are all about. Just not straight up what you woud think of the trailer may lead you to believe. No denying there are some buzzing sex scenes, but all are done in the service of story and characterization. You will be surprised by lots of the dark humor scenes throughout the movie. The 2 and half hour run time just whizz by without a dull moment and you will always be engaged with the story progression. The art direction is enough to warrant multiple viewings. I dare say Hitchcock die hard fans will approve!!!Blu-ray must buy.

Please go watch this movie. This Korean zombie movie beating the hell out of World War Z. It has good plot and character development. Indeed IMO it is the best zombie ever made. Definitely worth the ticker price. I'll rate 9/10.

Don't Breathe

The only horror suspense this year that got me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Normally horror movies don't do anything for me, maybe because I always have this conscience that ghosts and zombies aren't real so I don't get terrified. The usual jump scares in most horror flicks are predictable too.

BUT this movie broke that rule and actually made me nervous almost the entire time. It's really intense and when you think things are gonna cool down, they take it to another level. I'm glad to have found the best horror suspense this year.

There's a lot to like about this movie:

- The fact that it's shot almost entirely in a single location (confined space) with very minimal dialogue and still delivers, is really awesome.

- Very effective use of sound effects and every nook of the house!

- The actors are very believable. Body language and facial expression are top notch. When they squirm, you squirm alongside them. It's intense.

- The entire situation is very surreal. A blind man with a gun shooting wildly in a confined space can kill and you'll never know it's coming. That's the expression I get, which makes it very, very unpredictable.

Cons:

- Just a minor gripe and most people may have the same thought. There are few instances when they can overcome the blind man but I think if I were in that situation, I'd stay as quiet as possible too. Besides, they're not murderers to begin with and best case scenario is to leave the place, without committing murder.

Rating: 9/10 thumbup.gif
