I have been in LYN for a while now, and to my surprise, Universiti Malaysia Perlis does not have its own thread. So I decided to start one here.

Calling all past, current or future UniMAP students! Please report in. First, do introduce yourself. State your school, the course you are studying, your academic session intake year (for past, current and future students) and your year of study (for current students).

Let's begin with myself. I am from the School of Mechatronic Engineering, taking Mechanical Engineering. I am a student from the 2007/2008 intake, and I have now graduated.

So sad that i heard that UniMAP is a University with 1st class equip but not utilize, with good govenrment support but all 3 class students. Is it real?

lolx... it's new... all new stuff generally need time to warm up... also... location wise.... perlis. lolx... absolutely no entertainment(at leaast if compared to big cities)

hello guys. UPU result just out today and it turns out I get this 'Kejuruteraan Rangkaian Komputer' course here. I'm pretty clueless about this, as I never had that option in my list. btw I am an ex asasi sn hayat student and I have no idea why they 'campak' me to engineering because my maths are C anyway compare to my bio, A. But hey the deed is done, I'm grateful and I will be going I guess. I like computers.

Sooo.... can anybody kindly explain to me abit about the course? is it the same as Computer Network Engineering? I have asked Uncle Google around but I appreciate more i f I can hear from real people to boost my confidence.

lolx...... erm... this uni considered quite new... building new campus.. haha.. so everything will be quite new. Industry wise it is very well accepted, haha, dun wori bout no job, around 70% here get their jobs before they grad. Just some of the courses nt yet accredited cz it's very new, so if ya want wrk wit government, need some procedures. lolx

life in perlis expected lah.. not much ''city'' entertainment. lolx... but you will find ur entertainments needs in neighboring kedah. just an hour away. ^^

erm... hostels depends , i nt sure bout new batch guys going whr, but just to giv heads up... I currently living in taman... yes, the hostels are terrace houses, Kg. Wai, Seberang Ramai and Taman Semarak. Nice n comfortable... if yea lucky to be thr u dun hav to worry about food. ^^
The other 2 spots are Wang Ulu(Most probably new comers come here) and Simpang Empat(for business students)... these are apartment style. haha. quite ulu.... wish ya luck if you're placed thr.

Okay... for manufact course.
Erm... Alot of people taking this course during my batch, i can say quite fun... i cant say whut subjects u will be taking cz i dunno, but i knw my frens their projects are always making stuff. Nice! Erm... i'm nt frm this course so sorry i cant giv more info.

for network engineering
haha. u will touch on computers yes, but mostly u will be studying those internet tcpip dns udp blabla stuff. computer studies all live in Seberang Ramai and kg.wai. again, new batch COULD be thr.. but i nt sure.

for mechatronics
haha my course. haha. my senior batch have 40+ students,my batch have around 80 90+ students... =.= but my junior's batch just gt 20+people.... your batch i duno ler... u can always come and try.. haha
this course 50%electronics 30%programming 20%mechanical. Learn C programming, microcontrollers, robots, control, machine vision, statics and dynamics, applied mechanics, machine design, controls and etc etc.
projects would mostly be combination of electronics and mechanical based. Example, my recent project is auto rotating carpark using colour identification system. Basically, in mechatronics, u WILL create stuff.... other courses mostly just based on autocad drawings and computer simulation.
Hard or not, depends... some course u dun like of cz wil be hard.

hey guys! I got Kejuruteraan Perhubungan from UniMAP. Something I absolutely didn't apply for. Nevertheless, I googled it under Telecommunications Engineering and I must say, it frightens me to see words such as circuits, electronics and fibre optics. Just so u guys know, I'm a biology student who's been offered a physics-related course. I'm still contemplating on whether i should take up this course. Can someone pls tell me more about it and also the university? What are the subjects? How many students? How popular is it? and is it true that the university is in the middle of a housing area?

i have something to add on IvanWong1989's reply..

ur first yr in manufacturing engg wil b on d vy fundamentals of engg.. which is maths and physics.. if u r an stpm student, i dont think u wil haf any problem in most of d subjects..

2nd yr wil go deeper into d core of engg.. u wil b studying mostly on material properties and also on design.. all in all.. 2nd yr wil b interesting..

when u enter 3rd yr.. dats whr d specialisation comes in.. manufacturing engg in d industry is synonym for production management and quality control, as well as on machine design and instrumentation.. 3rd yr wil b a lot more technical compared to d previous years..

by d time u enter into ur final year, u wil know exactly wat is ur interest.. dats whr ur final yr project (fyp) destination wil b.. fyp wil b more on hands on and independent work.. u wil spend most of ur time doing ur fyp.. besides dat, u get to choose subjects u wish to study.. they r called elective subjects.. strictly speaking, dis subjects wil likely to determine ur career path.. so u r advised to choose wisely..

Hi all , I just received offer from UniMAP , they were offered me Polymer Enginering . But the way , I overcome some problem , can someone help me ?

1) When I try to press the bloody "setuju" button . It is still remain the same after I press the setuju button and refresh the page . Anyone have this problem ?

2) After I keep spamming on that setuju button and printed all the documents including offer letter , I refresh the page again . Suddenly this thing pops out as below :

i m here to answer question 3..

in unimap.. u wil b staying in d hostel throughout ur course duration.. dis means dat u need not to go out and hunt for a room.. saves u time as well as money..

since unimap is providing hostel (we cal it kolej kediaman) to everyone.. we just cant simply choose d hostel we want and stay in it.. hostel location wil b pre-arranged.. one entire course wil b staying in one kolej kediaman.. dis is to greatly ease communications between coursemates.. also, which kolej kediaman will u b staying in wil depends on d location of ur lecture rooms and labs..

housemates (those staying wif u in d same house) are arranged by d officers-in-charge.. but, u can choose ur roomate (d one who is in d same room wif u)..

unimap has both terrace house and flat-like type of kolej kediaman.. a little on my experience.. i have stayed in both terrace house and d flat-like kolej kediaman throughout my course duration.. and i stil prefer d flat-like type.. n i duno why..

dont b too worry my fren.. everything wil turn out fine..

i sincerely wish u all d best in solving question 1 and 2.. i m sorry i cant help..

Problem 1 and 2 are the error of the webpage , now everything become normal back . But the way , the hostel will provide us what facilities ?

erm... perhaps wait for sum people in that course stumble upon here to explain?? lolx... i try see portal see what subjects u will be taking..... though pls research on urself too whut this course is about. The uni was a distributed campus concept. meaning the whole perlis area got our facilities. nowadays, main campus is being built, so depends whether ur course facilities are outside of main campus or inside. Either way, hostels are spread accross perlis, new comers SHOULD be going to the flats styled hostels.... i'm in taman semarak.. terrace house hostels..

erm... welcome. erm.. uni life for me it's quite okay ah... no cinema, no big shopping complex, no karaoke... lolx..no mcd......BUT nt a problem. sewa kereta go 45 minits sumtimes one day trip to kedah to play. ^^
i live in kuala perlis.. so chinese food nt a problem for me ler...
Lecturers...... haha... as always, thr will be those that are extremely good while those that can make u slp to those that simply wun giv marks to students. haha... banyak orng banyak ragam mah.

i finished 2 years, still have 2 years more to go.

eh... u senior hor. ^^ hihi./.... i junior ler... hehe...

lolx.... hostel.... erm...iron... iron board.... boiler.... bed... mattress... almari.... haha. that's all.
u are nt allowed to use ur own boiler, or any high watt stuff.... lolx....
(though i do recommend among ur rummates.... one of u bring a water boiler for ur own use... cz the house boiler very often becomes dirty..... haha...)

err i wanna say tat.. got mini Kbox and MANY KFC at perlis =P

do keep a close eye on ur cgpa.. its vy important to maintain it as high as possible.. when u come out and seek for employment.. d first thing they look into is ur cgpa.. and even if u r being called for an interview.. they wil also comment on ur cgpa as well..

Oh senior ~ i wanna ask.. Dean letter got use when graduate? the letter we get when we able to maintain our cgpa 3.5 / above ~

when i first came to unimap during d 2007/2008 intake.. perlis was literally a ghost town.. yes, thr was kfc's and pizza hut.. but thr was no dis so-called kbox.. entertainment was realy scarce in perlis.. d only entertainment at night was d beach side in kperlis.. n believe me.. u wont want to go thr after d first time..

as i m from ipoh, when i was first thr in perlis.. i was really shocked.. thr was no entertainment of any kind.. but now that i hav graduated, i believe this was a blessing in disguise.. no entertainment made me spend more time on my studies.. yes.. jokes aside.. i m dead serious about dat..

honestly.. u realy need to work out on ur cgpa then.. most of d subjects wil get tougher as u progress higher.. set urself a target for every sem.. n work towards dat target..

yes.. d dean letters dat u receive every sem r definately of good use.. when u go and look for jobs after u graduate.. ur potential employers wil look at ur credentials.. n if more than one candidate apply for d same job, it might b d deciding factor.. it wil not guarantee u employment dats for sure.. but u wil stand a higher chance to b called for an interview..

dean letter (or we usually call it dean list) is a indication of ur performance.. d best is to get it every semester.. dis shows dat u r capable of maintaining ur cgpa above 3.50, which is a healthy score..

keep all ur dean lists in a cool, safe place.. it wil b another feather on ur hat when u graduate later..

i do haf quite a number of frens who were in d same situation as u r in now.. i recalled one who did her stpm biology, and she was offered to do metalurgical engg in unimap.. well, she was obviously frightened and clueless when she got dat offer.. but yet she took up d offer..

yes, d first few months was quite a struggle for her.. but as time passed by, she slowly picked up n she was doing well in d next semester.. dont worry.. u wil nt b alone thr.. u wil haf vy helpful lecturers whom are always ready to help u out.. on top of dat.. u wil haf lots of helpful coursemates..

You can ask for your Dean's List certificate during your final semester. Just tell the PIC that you need them for job applications.

The OSI will be opened for access after July 19, 2011, where the results for curative courses and FYP will be released. I think the system is currently jammed up due to the 2011/2012 intake process.

oh.... so is 19th july....

haha... i checked on 8th jun.. but forgot to save result slip..... nw waiting 2nd opening time.... hopefully gt.. lolx...

unimap has shuttle buses which travel back and forth from hostels to d pick-up place (kwsp, kangar).. n kwsp to d bus station is just within walking distance.. so its not a problem..

if u r taking a plane.. i dont think u wil b landing in perlis.. most probably u wil b landing in alor star.. and u haf to take a bus to d bus station from alor star to kangar.. it wil b troublesome if d flight from ur place to ur destination is in d morning.. then u wil waste at least half a day travelling..

if u r taking a bus.. no doubt it wil take 12 hours to reach ur destination.. but most long-distant buses do travel at nite.. you wil reach early in d morning.. and u wont waste one day travelling..

dats wat i learnt from my frens who insist on travelling by bus instead of by plane.. mayb u can try both.. and see which one is to ur convenience..

take bus.... it's better.. take plane u going to land in alor setar... then the hassle of finding bus go kangar.... zzzz..

honestly.. i was quite naive dat time.. thought a mechanical student shd b going to a mechanical-related factory for internship.. juz for me to realise how silly i was to haf dat kind of mentality.. i do regret not doing my internship in ipoh..

in fact, ipoh has a lot of factories and MNCs dat offer internship opportunities.. its nt true dat if u r a mechanical student, u shdnt goto a semiconductor plant for internship.. they do haf departments which need d expertise of a mechanical engineer.. dats whr u learn new things from..

hi 'm a 3rd year student , mechatronics.
1 week left for my internship.

as of internship , you need to apply youself then get approval from ur coordinator. So if you got any interest regarding any company you could start searching.

k..k.... haha.. baru end 2nd year oli... think now too early ah? lolx...

Of course it's too early to worry about your internship placement. Your internship period is only for a few months, as compared to my time where one whole semester is devoted solely for training.

If possible, choose a company which is in your hometown, since there is only a Pass/Fail grading for your internship. You get to save on food and lodging. On top of that, you can spend your semester break with your family.

Think about it... Big company, multi-national company, small company, public-listed company, at the end, you still get only a Pass.

seniors, i heard about the accreditation issue of unimap last year... so whats the status now?

New hostel placement for student 2nd year and above


New intake will be staying in wang ulu 4 storey apartment with 3 bedroom and 2 toilet, 6 person one house

Students need not worry about the accreditation issues.

Top management will solve them before the students' graduation. Nobody wants his/her university to produce unrecognised degree holders.

Concentrate on your studies and let the top guys solve the problem.

Ragging is a serious offence in UniMAP. If you lodge a complain to your school's Dean of Student Affairs, the raggers will wish that they were never born...

thr still got... but just play play oli.. lolx... nt considered as mainstream ragging.. haha... can be said fun geh... IF it din get any more worse.. lolx...

Seems like people here don't have any problem achieving 3.5 CGPA la. Terel sial... How did you guys do it? Life there, go class come back study only? No entertainment, watch movies whatsoever?

Added on July 17, 2011, 11:15 pmhaha.. biomedic normally the trend is 90%gurls.... 10% guys.. lolx... this course u will learn mostly about human biology things... my rummate in 2nd year he took subjects like analysis of the human physiology, electric circuit, microcontroller programming(this just to expose, nt really core subject), more bio stuff like human bone hardness, pacemakers and wth i duno.. lolx.. i myself hav no love for bio.. hahax....

illegal? erm.. water heater... haha... and any other electrical appliance that sucks electricity.. but table fan they let u bring. haha.. i bought one cz the weather too hot..
water heater erm... dun bring thr... wait evlithing settle first then go buy sendiri thr.... hide it lor... although unimap gt provide seterika iron board and water boiler... the water boiler is shared by whole house.. if u nt lucky.. housemates wun clean the thing afta use... so will get dirty... my solution... smuggle in a water boiler share wit oli ur rummates. haha.

but seriously why lecture is conducted in such a small class? didnt really expect so small.. sure not comfortable with the chair bcz the place is like so small for us to write notes and sure front row make behind row cant see.. sigh~

erm.. actuallly cz our batch the population boomed... haha... so many people... so split into 3 groups... also lidat adi.. better than no split group.. zzz cant breathe.. lolx.. but it's ok... enuf spce actually... and the classrum feel makes it easier to ask lecturer stuff.... i personally no likey too big lecture halls... cant ask the lecturers cz they so far away... and dun wory about stuffyness..... the aircond is super cold... untill all wearing jaket....

erm... distributed is last time... now they are slowly going to main campus... most of the courses should be going to to main campus di.. haha... but actually.. tell u personally.... i prefer distributed... cz when class breakthat time can go to the mak cik roadside stall eat yummy things.. haha...
in main campus... food er.... nt to say bad.. just nt much choice.. lolx...

but a few years later.. when too many students.. nt sure le... so we are lucky ones that still get to stay in hostel 4 years, save on rent. hehe....

erm... assuming u all living in wang ulu .... computer campus is at kg. wai.. so .... bout 30 minits bus ride... haha...

all ur seniors in computer courses live at kg.wai.. so they dun even need to go out... just walk oli can di.. lolx....

i guess IvanWong1989 has a bit of a misconception about mechanical engg thr..

on one hand, he is rite.. mechanical engg does deal with statics and thermodynamics and fluid.. dats d basic of almost all d engg courses..

on d other hand, mechanical engg in unimap is more than dat.. gears and reduction gears r not too accurate, if u ask me.. unimap's mechanical engg course, during my time, stresses more on d knowledge of all engineering fundamentals (statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer..) on other complex engineering applications.. dis include modelling, design, simulations and analysis..

u wil also b learning high-end softwares during ur course.. solidworks and autocad are two main modelling softwares which r utilised throughout ur study.. besides dat, u wil also learn how to use design and simulation softwares..

simulation is one of d major stream in mechanical engg.. think of a vehicle crash-testing scene in perodua.. it wil b vy costly if u r to bang a myvi or a viva against a wall, to see how d impact force is exerted on d driver and passengers.. wat if u r to bang a dozen of myvi's and viva's on different wall surfaces, or wif differently aged drivers.. perodua wil go bankrupt in a fortnight..

dats whr simulations come in.. first u haf to model all ur test subjects (d myvi, d driver in d driver's seat, and its passengers, and also d wall).. then u set all d necessary test conditions and properties.. n u r all set to literally bang ur myvi against d wall.. all test conditions n properties r simply variables.. u can change it as many times as u like..

d best thing about simulation is dat, u can get very realistic and accurate results, without a few dozen of twisted myvi's and viva's in perodua's backyard waiting to be scraped.. it indeed saves cost..

does d above interest you, all mechanical engineers wannabes..? if it does, then u r in for a treat..!

for all mechanical, mechatronic and biomedical electronics engg newcomers, dis is how our school looks like.. yes, we do call it school.. in bm, it wil b pusat pengajian kejurutaraan (PPK).. n dis is d arial view of d school of mechatronic's (ppk mekatronik) building.. and believe me, its big..!


dis is one of d labs in our school.. dis is d mechanical engg's solid mechanic and vibration lab..


dis is d school's cafeteria.. d food is nice, and its at a very affordable price.. d boss is vy friendly too..
