I think you mean the Nvidia proprietery driver. I too am using the Nvidia's proprietery driver but mine is an automated kernel mod from RPMFusion, so that I don't need to re-install the driver everytime the kernel is updated.

Basically, the proprietery driver is better than nouveau as nouveau doesn't fully support the cards architecture. Nvidia knows what they are doing since it's their cards, but the proprietery driver is unecessary if all you want to do is surfing the internet, etc. If you want to play demanding games, their proprietery driver is heavily recommended.

Go for proprietary, do know what is the best for their hardware.

i'm on debian xfce right now.. i installed lmde (default is gnome) then stripped it, deleted all gnome related stuff including gnome core, libs, nautilus, gdm etc then installed xfce.. maybe it depends on those that i deleted so its deleted automatically tongue.gif
but isn't there any other user & group management tool that doesn't require all that gnome related stuff? hmm.gif hmm.gif

already installed, but too scared to use terminal tools like that. prefer gui. not fancy mancy gui, maybe just a simple gui to make my day easier.
btw i think that user & group management thingy in gome is in gnome-system-tools package. try to install it but it tried to pull a bucketload of gnome crap like alacarte and brasero mad.gif mad.gif

Did you try "apt-get --no-install-recommends install gnome-system-tools" ?

Stable Debian releases have never been a big thing for me, thanks to Debian's "It's stable only once it's outdated" policy.
What I'm really looking forward to is the unfreezing of Sid main and testing sources. Let the breakage happen!!

Oh wow!! In all my years on Debian, I've never once dared to do that. Experimental is like a Nuclear EMP waiting to happen and you should be very selective with individual package/lib/dependency upgrades. Good luck, man sweat.gif

Oh, any Sid/Unstable users here? Just a note, there's a very risky Xorg update that came out recently, and I recommend you don't do a dist-upgrade for at least teh next 2 weeks, as there's bound to be breakage.

Also, for Unstable 32bit users, there's discussion over at the dev channels about a very dodgy ffmpeg upgrade coming soon ... you've been warned.

Lastly, anyone on Unstable is urged to dist-upgrade outside X from now onwards (unless it's just non admin/system related packages like Gimp, Rhythmbox...etc)

Can't be helped, since everything just got unfrozen and everyone's struggling trying to allocate dev manpower between Squeeze (for server client support) and Testing/Unstable/Upstream.

Hullo nix sifus. I'm wondering if you guys could answer my question. Right now I am using HP Probook4402s i3@2.13ghz with 4gb of ram running on windows 7 . This is my programming tools for day to day operation

2 eclipse
1 Jboss Developer Studio (another variant of eclipse but dedicated to do workflow visualization)
Oracle XE Locally
soa-5.0.2.GA jboss-as application server
Excel and MS office

putty
winscp
foobar
notepad++
toad/aqua
skype

I've trim my windows s minimal as possible but when i run the jboss application server it really hit my system overall performance. Im wondering with the same load on a nix(thinking of ubuntu 10.10) will it be a different scenario or it'll be the same.

Many thanks in advance.
