Anyone know how does the Wolfson usb dac and the beginner usb dac that being sold by chchyong89 compares with Asus Xonar U1? Which one could provide a warmer sound as I intend to pair with C3. Please help!
*
Don worry about that definely way much better than Xonar U1. I own U1 and pcm2704.
And this dac is better than the basic pcm2704. So for sure it's a major upgrade for your C3.

Usable, but you won't get real 5.1 sound unless used with 5.1 source and sound card. Anyway, the Z-640 have what it called the matrix button for 5.1 sound simulation. Just connect the green 3.5mm jack to the DAC and enjoy.
*
Only connect the green 3.5mm jack to the DAC? how about the yellow and black 3.5mm jack?

Look. There's only one output socket on that DAC. You can't squeeze 3 jacks in there.. laugh.gif

According to your question, it can be used.

Hi as you can read above i think this SC is not intended for a 5.1 and the only workaround would be using the matrix button mentioned above (i've never played with anything above 2.1!, so pardon me if I said some crappy stuff smile.gif )
This USB DAC only has 1 x 3.5mm jack and for a 2.1 setup, correct me if I'm wrong, just trying to help here

From your Z640, this is what you mean with the 3 x 3.5mm jacks (My guess 1 x center, 1 x front, 1 x rear)

I think even if you have this converter, it would not do much of 5.1 and still intended for 2.1, that's why the use of Matrix. If you mod it with this, the sound still will be 2.1 on each position, and either too loud or too low volume. About how good would the Matrix be, I have no idea and need others to help you on this

Maybe need someone who has tested this card on a 2.1 setup and above and let you know how it would sound

This DAC only has 2 channels.

Means only the green wire applies. You don't need the rest.

You won't use this for multichannel gaming because it was not designed to do so. All music files are encoded and recorded in 2 channels, so anything more is moot.

Is there any software available that can do a conversion to (pseudo) 5.1?

I don't think so. Because it's pretty much hardware limited. The conversion has to be done on the hardware itself. The speaker must be capable of converting to 5.1.

However, if you have a sound card with multi channel output but a 2 channel music file, you can choose to do software conversion.

In that case, it would be awesome, hope TS could bring in more unit at the same price. nod.gif By the way, I have yet to get the C3 but already start looking at things to improve it. sweat.gif doh.gif
Anyway, what RCA cable and speaker to speaker cable is an upgrade for C3? Belden Cat5e cable with Neurik connector that being sold here ?

The green one is for front speakers, black is for the rear, orange for center. Btw, here's a direct quote from Z-640 manual.

QUOTE
2-channel sound card: Connect the green plug from the audio input cable to the “line out” jack on your sound card. To enable sound from the center channel speaker, depress the Matrix button on the center speaker. With a 2-channel sound card, you will not hear sound from the rear speakers.

Here's the link to the manual that I found.

I've 2 questions :

I'm getting a Harman Kardon SoundSticks III, using it on a Macbook Pro 2010.

1) Would this DAC improve the sound quality of the Harman Kardon. I'm more into music listening and movie. Less on Gaming.
2) Can I still control the volume through my Mac OSX? Or only though speaker?

Regards

1. Give it a try biggrin.gif
2. You can control volume on the media player itself and the speaker. On Windows, main volume controller has no effect, not even mute. I believe it's intended to preserve line-level output with no resolution loss from software volume control.

Do you mean the volume control on windows that can be adjusted at the bottom right does not affect the sound quality?

It simply does not work.

Anyway, even if it does, it affects quality. Though apparently still usable for many people.

Digital attenuation causes loss of bits, so an amp is definitely recommended to get everything from it wink.gif.
