By usb speaker, is it a usb powered speaker (i.e. a speaker with 3.5mm jack) or a speaker that connects to the pc with a usb cable ONLY?

As far as I know, it'll need some mod. Cutting some cable here and there etc. With what I've in mind, it'll lose the usb only connection function. There may be some other way though. hmm.gif

Let's hope that chchyong89 have a different answer. (He responded to your question at his other topic btw.)

There are two conditions

1. the USB speaker has it's own DAC and USB power amplifier inside the speaker.

2. It using USB amplifier but still need the signal feed from outsource. For example laptops' sc or DAC. (Which usually they have two cables, one is USB and one is audio jack.)

Let me know the model of the speaker will do. biggrin.gif

DAC's job is to improve the onboard soundcard in ur laptop/desktop. The one which drives the headphones is called amp, not DAC.

This DAC acts like an external soundcard. Amp is to amplify the wave or like adding more "power".

If u seriously have to choose between the two, I'd recommend u to get a decent DAC first. If ur source is bad, no matter how good is ur headphone and amp also useless. Rubbish in rubbish out laugh.gif

Rubbish in, rubbish out, so without a good DAC, we are basically amplifying rubbish source..lol (provided we use an amp)

Meaning you still need an amp after all?

I am using a multimedia speaker which I believe it comes with an amplifying unit inside, I don't think anyone would use an amp to connect their multimedia speaker right..

Also if my headphone is something easier to drive, amp can be rather optional too right?

Yes. My Superlux is driven easily by the DAC. Any more 'oomph' will require amping.. tongue.gif

this dac practically works with ANY multimedia speakers.

Multimedia speakers = computer intended speaker sets.

Usable, but you won't get real 5.1 sound unless used with 5.1 source and sound card. Anyway, the Z-640 have what it called the matrix button for 5.1 sound simulation. Just connect the green 3.5mm jack to the DAC and enjoy.

Anyone know how does the Wolfson usb dac and the beginner usb dac that being sold by chchyong89 compares with Asus Xonar U1? Which one could provide a warmer sound as I intend to pair with C3. Please help!
