I plan to apply for big4 after my december exam.

Is it feasible?

I have been working in one of the Big 4 for only 1.5 year, and I am kind of lost now after some big and small peaks. While I am now clearing all my leaves, and really have time to think about my future again, I couldn’t imagine what audit might lead me to at the end of the day.

Any buddy here kind enough to tell me what makes you to stay in the firm any longer, if not where would you venture into when you leave audit ? doh.gif

Yes, but its rare. You'd have to be quite exceptional. Thing is, many of the advisory/ consulting associates have prior work experience before joining, whether by hiring choice or just the general view that "you'd need x years of audit experience before applying".
*
That's not actually true... Advisory does hire quite a lot of fresh grads for most lines. There r some which are more technical (like transactions advisory) may require previous audit knowledge but in general there is quite a lot of intake of fresh grads. But it tends to be mostly foreign grads from top universities.

Apologies, agree with your statement. My reply was skewed towards consulting and possibly strategy roles too.

A side observation though, at least from one of the Big 4 firms, new associates (entry level) often have some sort of prior experience.

Fair enough I suppose it does vary across Big 4 and I can't speak for the other 3, only for the one I was at which always sees influx of new freshies.

What is it that you don't like about audit? Is it the work or simply the hours? Do you see yourself eventually going into Finance and if so would you enjoy the work?

Audit is fun, but most of the documentation kill the funs when it takes more than half of your audit time... always wonder how long is the right time to leave audit, and move on..

Hmm.. Finance is cool, rather doing finance instead of account.. lol

Even large consulting firm do hire fresh grads, just that you gotta be damn good to qualify.

But as for strategic roles, maybe prior experience is required.

Say u work for 3 years in Big 4 and decided to leave, you can continue in IA, accounting (commercial or share service), consulting and advisory (Accenture n etc), HR, finance and many more.
Most important is your interest and willingness to explore new thing and skill.
I have met accounting student working as insurance consultant, property agent, financial planner.
Audit is just a base to many more wonder things in the future. rclxms.gif

Working almost 4 years in a shared service. Getting reallly bored of it now. Thinking of going into Deloitte's Business Analyst - Technology role but so far no response.

Audit is secondary for me even tho I'm an Accounting graduate. Any advice or ideas on what else to do?

Many people has the fantasy working in Big 4, and some might be staying in audit for more years because of the MIA membership, study bond, or even worse, working for no reason (firm doesnt fired anyway).. lol

I am getting a little bit bored off, because I only join for 3 jobs all year round, and recurring every year.. haha.. so my inner thought ask me to learn more new things and still struggling, but I will just stay till I become a senior and see what might lead me to.. smile.gif

They do have bootcamps hiring fresh grads (those with <1 year of exp) or 1-2 years of exp for consulting positions but of course results have to be good.

For strategy, many fresh grads comes with an MBA from a reputable uni or with some sort of experience intern/similar summer placements etc.

Try those just below Big 4 like GT, Baker Tilly, BDO, RSM, Crowe Howard. More industry exposure.
Big 4 is boring if one year only stay at Insurance company...hehe. icon_question.gif

You will learn more in mid firms, but working in big4 makes it easier for you to enter back the same firm as permanent staff in the future.
*
Yeah, agreed.

I used to work in the Big 4 and mid firm.

I guess you'll learn a lot in the mid firms as you are given chance to do simple sections such as PPE, cash, etc.

Usually the interns or VT are not allowed to do any sections (most of the Big 4), your role is just extracting the minutes/stat audit or vouching. You will not learn much bout audit. (but you will learn a lot bout their culture, politics, and excel skill I guess)

However, it depends on which Big 4 that you plan to do internship.

That good thing is that you'll have the chance to join back after grad (unless you screw up with one of the seniors or managers and received bad feedback)

If I recall correctly, Big4 usually use the web-based online application system even for their branch.

Could you explain more? Maybe PM me what it would be like?

I'm more towards IT than accounting/finance. rclxub.gif
