Is it possible to be a manager in 6 years? I feel that that is a little optimistic, maybe 7-8 years is a better aim.

Just wondering, why do so many accountants join auditing when it is disliked by so many, aren't there those who join tax and advisory as well? Also if auditing is seen as a good stepping stone to progress in the career, some earlier posts said that an Audit Manager will find it hard to join as a Finance Manager in commerce, so what lies in the future path of an auditor (assuming he leaves the big 4)?

What are the general academic requirements to be called up for an interview? Around CGPA of 3.7 or ACCA?

2 people for First Class and got rejected does not really make sense, I am sure you guys did ok in the interview. Definitely apply for the other big 4, but I thought they have a shortage of people now. Do they just not want to train fresh grads during tax season?

To those in Big 4 now,

Are you there for the experience before switching to commerce after 3-5 years for a bigger salary? Or, do you intend to work in the company for a large portion of the career?

Reason I am asking is that it appears that the salary within the big 4 is not extremely attractive especially for the early years but after manager in ~6 years, maybe okay. Also, how do the work hours compare for a fresh grad and his senior/manager? Same hours? Do those in commerce have shorter hours?

The working hours depend on culture one, normally most stay because they want to stay to finish their work maybe due to incompetency or dedication. Salary wise, its actually quite ok but once compared to responsibility and hours of work, it becomes incomparable.
*
So what do you think is better for career progression, remain in big 4 to possibly reach senior manager or director or to move to commerce which is what people seem to be doing... Commerce gets better pay I presume, but what about environment and pressure etc?

I think what he meant is pass ACCA
*
Oh right. So passing ACCA kind of makes university grades less important.

Anyway, has the peak started for audit yet? Can anyone share the kind of roles which an intern does within the audit department? Thanks!

For those working at PwC KL, where do you usually park? Would you mind sharing the rates and time you usually have to get there by? Thanks!

The recommended Lot F parking seems really far away.

Hi HawkreiN,

We normally park at Lot F unfortunately... However, there is a shuttle van service which will ferry us to and from the office. They are quite frequent in the morning and evening.
*
I tried both walking and using the shuttle van, not bad at all. Thanks for your reply!

I am in a serious trouble now.  I am an overseas graduate with an average grade of B+ and I have two months of internship experience at one of the big four. I am active in curriculum activities and I am very committed in social work such as volunteering..etc
I speak fluent English and I do fluent Mandarin and decent Cantonese.
Somehow I got rejected for EY and didn't get any response from Deloitte.
I was told that PwC is the hardest to get in among the four.
Need some suggestion and feedbacks people...
Any HR from the big four here? Any advice from you guys?
Desperately wanting to get into the Big Four sad.gif
Need some assistance and guidance...
*
Any reason for EY's rejection? Call up Deloitte.

PwC does appear to have a preference for private uni/ foreign grads. It's a stressful period, but things could always turn out well.

Don't worry too much about the "big-4-audit-only" path, there are plenty of opportunities out there which you'd probably enjoy more. Search around the forums. All the best for your applications!

Called up both EY and Deloitte ady. Deloitte has reassessed my application and invited me over for an interview. May I know how's the assessment? Will there be group assessment or mainly individual interview.

EY has reviewed my application too and asked if I would be interested in tax due to my academic performance. They will get back to me as soon as possible.

Any advice?

Go for the interviews you secured. You can always decide later. Good luck!

Hello, thanks for the heads up! I have an upcoming interview with PwC's Industry Xplorer programme.
What should I expect from the interview?
I am currently working in a different service line in deloitte for less than a month. I have always wanted to join Assurance services though.
I have included my current job position in my cv. I realized that it isnt a very good idea to have stated in my cv.
How am I supposed to answer question such as " since you have done your internship at kpmg, why didnt you join kpmg instead?
You are currently working in a diff service line in deloitte, why are u still here for the interview. What would be my best approach in combating such question.
It is not unusual to have people hopping from one to another among the big four right?

P.S. I hope I am just being too paranoid haha
*
PwC's IX interview: Usually some basic tests then interviews. Those that have done PwC internships in the past just have 1 interview round which could be a casual chat or some competency questions (depending on your interviewer).

Why you didn't choose to join KPMG instead: You can be honest about it, they would not penalise you for it. You can bring up issues about firm culture, brand recognition etc (PwC take pride in being the 'best in Malaysia')

Different service line: Again, just be honest. You have tried it, is it where your interests lie? Do you see yourself in your current service line in 5 years/ 10 years? Do you feel that your knowledge development is limited in your current service line?

Perfectly normal for people to switch between service lines, and even rejoining big4 firms after leaving. Good luck! biggrin.gif

Thank you very much smile.gif I got accepted for PwC. PwC's Assurance is definitely better than Deloitte's Assurance right? Somehow I was told by my colleague that Deloitte has got better software that reduced the amount of paperwork.
Is that true? Career prospect for PwC will be better right?

For audit, yup, I think you're on the right track. Congrats!!

Hi all! In a dilemma now. I am being given a choice to enter in a consulting role with deloitte. I am a fresh ACCA holder with no experience. What would you guys think in regards to this matter? Will going into consulting be too big a leap and should I go into tax (my second choice) to build up my technical knowledge? Also, will consulting help me get my acca membership?
*
Why would it be too big a leap? If they are willing to make you an offer, they obviously see something that you don't. There are people who love consulting and others who are intimidated by it, try to figure out what you want (depends on the dept offered too).

Client wise , in Malaysia . the rank will be like this :

Delloite < KPMG < EY < PWC .

correct me if im wrong.
*
From what I hear, PwC has the largest clients, EY has more clients. Deloitte has a smaller presence than the other 3. But that was a while back.

Your not so well results got a minimum cgpa 3.0? I know some uni cgpa from 3 to 3.3 also got rejected, so yea.

And its not doom and gloom to not start at a big 4 firm, plenty of other firms out there whether its smaller audit firms or mnc.

And are you sure you will suit big 4, maybe you should get more information, and if you still think big 4 suits you best, well go for it.

Some ppl dying to go in big 4 but quit after 1 month. Lol.

Anyways all the best.  nod.gif
*
Hahah I resigned after a month. A few main reasons:

1) Not allocated to my preferred industry
2) Took audit not for the job itself, but for the job that audit would give me after 5-6 years
3) Was not my interest and there was no certainty that I would be able to successfully make the switch in 5-6 years

To others aspiring to join big4, it is indeed a good path to start from, placing you on a great career trajectory. However, the work is not for everyone and there are plenty of opportunities outside, if you know where to look. I chose to go to my preferred field directly, as an undergrad. While audit experience is invaluable for certain roles, it isn't as valuable for others. Therefore, go in with the end goal in mind.

biggrin.gif  1 month? Haha got to agree with this! My junior starts complaining on their 2nd week of work.
rolleyes.gif  And no pressure given to them yet.

I've seen new auditors manually key results from their calculators onto excel... sweat.gif Always a mixed bunch!

Well most big4 firms will specify which industry you would be involved in, unless its Deloitte or Kpmg, and if youre passionate about going there, maybe you should stay until a job opening is available in the team that youre interested in? Unless you get an offer too good to refuse in the process of waiting. You could also get a verbal agreement from the person who is interviewing you about which industry you want to get into.

Excel noob still understandable, where people before working days only use the web browser programmes in their computer. Lol. And also if the person took professional qualifications like ACCA and ICAEW, they can join audit firms as young as 20, their microsoft skils will be lacking. Due to the lack of exposure in assignments, as compared to degree programmes.
*
Yes, you're right. This is somewhat a catch 22; if one performs well, the department/manager will not allow a switch in team and conversely, if one performs badly, other departments/managers will not want such a team member.

My main point was to keep the end goal in mind when venturing into an audit career, as you mentioned, not everyone is suited for a role in the big4.

i have a few questions to ask and i hope someone can enlighten me biggrin.gif cheers

1. What does an audit associate normally do in big4 KL?
2. Is proficient in Bahasa Melayu is a "MUST" in this industry?
3. Do we need to write reports in a daily basis as an audit associate?

I am a fresh grad with no experience in working, and i don't have a good writing skills, so i am a bit worried, i hope someone can provide me with useful comment!!! Thank you so much!!! smile.gif
*
1) Like pherac said, simple sections, cash, PPE, dormant/ semi-dormant companies
2) Not a "MUST", my BM was bad but I was lucky that my clients were English speaking. It would depend on the industry you choose, and more importantly, the specific clients. It sure helps though!
3) Nope. Simple documentations on excel sheets.
