Hey guys, I need help here in a very big dilemma. Compact vs. DSLR

I've been thinking of getting a camera for ages but I can't seem to figure out whether to get a DSLR or Compact. Functionality wise, obviously I would use a compact more due to it's ease to carry but DSLR provides stunning photos (not saying compacts don't), the size might hinder me though to bring to everywhere I go. Time is another factor, due to my course resuming soon, the hectic schedule might not allow me to fully utilize my (imaginary now) DSLR so if I get a DSLR, would it be better to get a cheaper one? Or just go for compacts.

The DSLR I have in mind are 550D, D3100, K-x, D90.
The Compacts S95, LX-5 and those in the same range...

Pretty simple question eh: Compact or DSLR?

You know it yourself already. DSLRs produce much better image quality, better low light quality, better versatility for upgrade(lenses, accessories as such), more responsive.

Compacts on the other hand, are light and easy to carry around. Image quality I would say decent for its size.

Tell you what:

If you're buying a DSLR, you're actually investing into the camera

If you're buying a compact, you're just buying a camera

So my take is that, if you're serious about photography and really want take excellent pictures in the future, DSLR is the way to go

If you're just casually taking pictures here and there, more of like "snapshots", then compacts should be the way. Cheaper alternative also, easy on your wallet.

Well, you can always get a compact first. If you're not satisfied of the performance, you can always upgrade ma laugh.gif

Type of camera/lens/accesories : Compact/SLR
Budget : RM3000 include kitlens
Your Location : Penang
Preferable brand : Sony or Canon
Type of photography u want to do : Normal shoots for now
Any specific models in mind? : Sony TX-9, NEX 3/5
Any specific features u want? : Pink color?

My girlfriend planned to get one which is either the Sony TX-9 or NEX 3/5. One of the reason she prefer Sony is because of the color sweat.gif

Her plan was to get the NEX 5 but I'm trying to persuade her in not getting that one. She is still a beginner and I think it would be a waste for her to spend so much on a camera now. Any sifu can recommend compact camera's that fit the criteria above?

Why not NEX? Its a good camera, with few nice features and things to play with. She's a beginner means she can't learn how to use good camera fast? Lol.

Your budget is around 3k. That's enough for some entry level DSLRs already. Just let her get the Nex 5 and learn lo. Nothing is impossible.

I have this dilemma between LX5 and S95 because I dont really kno the specification difference that these 2 can offer. Can anyone guide me in telling me the difference in details or just a simple which to which should I get.

Or anyone have any other models that can fulfill my specific budget pls dont hesitate to spill out.

Dear Sifus, notworthy.gif

I was wondering whether you guys could help recommend me a suitable camera? Sorry for not using the template since I've no idea what I need sweat.gif
I'm working on an entomology project which requires me to take photos of small insects. Afaik normal digital cams are not suitable to take such photos even on macro mode hmm.gif
What type of camera best suits me>? Any non-DSLR cameras? The lens are very expensive cry.gif

Thanks in advance sifu!! notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

I'm not saying a beginner means that can't learn how to use a good camera fast.

What I'm trying to say is wouldn't it be better for her to learn from basic? I've read somewhere here where people asked beginners to learn from bottom with a compact camera until their skill > camera ability before stepping into SLR/DSLR.

And also perhaps some might suggest me with other camera's that would fit in the budget. I've got friends who said with the price of NEX, I would be better getting other models. And also I know nothing about photography, that is the reason I asked here.

For me, there is no such thing as learn with beginner's tool. I started photography with Nikon D90 and went further b3fore due to some shrewd reason, quit for a while.

There is no difference learning with a higher end camera compared to a basic camera. All you will get is improvement still.

Thus, if your girl is a smart and the type of person to advance herself in this field, Nex5 might suit her need and help her go far in this field. All depends on interest. If wanna use day to day shoot and dun care about how 2 improve, get a simple PnS hmm.gif
But if there is an interest to learn and advance herself, then why not a SLR / Nex / others? nod.gif

agreed. i started with a rm50 film camera, and then played around with a disposable film camera, and then move on to a fully auto Sony Cybershot, and then using a prosumer Olympus super zoom with manual settings for a few years before getting my first DSLR.
