Might look dull to most people, but anyone who is familiar with tiling and Xdefaults knows that it's easy to get a colour-scheme for a light or dark background, but almost impossible to get a usable one for a midtone, so I'm quite proud of this. Also falling back in love with the old-skool fixedsys font again.

Hi guys,

i like the scrotwm since it's minimal and suits my working laptop. i am using fedora. search around but seems to not be able to find any scrotwm package to install (maybe i dont know where). tried yum install scrotwm but it says no package available.

i found all the steps in this topic and the other topic on how to configure it, but up to this point i dont even know where can i find the package for fedora installation. can someone help to point to the right direction?

tried following this guide (for gentoo) but stuck: http://code.frostglow.com/wm/scrotwm-gentoo.html

well maybe that guide is not suitable for fedora?

Distro is GRML (a more geeky Debian .. for sysadmin and scripters)
I don't run a desktop environment like Gnome or KDE, and prefer lightweight window managers. Here I'm using ScrotWM, a tiling window manager (search wikipedia for info on tiling window managers)
You can run ScrotWM on any distro. Ubuntu should have it in the repos (apt-get install scrotwm). Might be a bit weird for a first-timer to use. I like it because I use mainly CLI/terminal apps on my netbook.

I don't use Fedora, so I'm not sure if there's an RPM out there or not. Have you tried the Fedora Rawhide repos?

You can always build from source.
Grab a version from here, preferably 0.9.8 or 0.9.9
http://opensource.conformal.com/snapshots/scrotwm/

Before you install make sure you have these dependencies (use yum install)
QUOTE
libx11-dev libxrandr-dev libxt-dev libc6 dwm-tools dmenu xterm xfonts-terminus (or terminus-font ... not sure package name in Fedora)

after that, extract the tgz file. Since ScrotWM is originally a BSD app, you'll need to cd into the "linux" folder. In there, you should see the Makefile. Then you run "make" (as user" and after that "make install" (as root) and the sources should be installed and the executable should be in your /usr/local/bin or /usr/bin (you have to check)

Assuming you run standard Fedora that uses Gnome and GDM;
Then you go to your /usr/share/xsessions and create a Scrotwm file and put this contents in
QUOTE
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=XSession
Exec=/usr/bin/scrotwm
TryExec=scrotwm
Name=ScrotWM
Comment=Launch ScrotWM tiling window manager
Important: change the path in the "Exec" line to the exact path where scrotwm got installed to (like I told you to check above)

Then you should be able to log out to and switch to scrotwm. If the doesn't work, try changing "Type=Xsession" to "Type=Application"

I can't say this method will work 100% cos I don't use Fedora or GDM, but it should in theory.

Tomorrow can or not? I left the netbook in the office today.
You want the scrotwm.conf or the terminal .Xdefaults?

I'm afraid there's no ScrotWM packages for Fedora, you can compile it yourself or use another twm like xmonad, awesome, etc.

This is why I'll never use Linux( or *BSD/UNIX kernel)-based OS as my desktop computer OS.

Well, maybe MacOS X will be an exception.

On the hand, it is great for application servers/mobile/embedded devices.

Actually, no. What you're doing is starting DWM, not ScrotWM. As I stated in the guide, you need to check to which path the scrotwm executable got installed to and put it in your "Exec" part. if not just try "Exec=scrotwm" and see if you see a ScrotWM entry when you log out to GDM. If not, you need to use your file manager and locate the scrotwm executable (it's probably somewhere in /usr/local/ or /usr/bin or /usr/share/bin).

.scrotwm.conf
I don't really run many GUI apps on my netbook, so it's quite simple. only app binding I have is Jumanji (browser), the rest I launch in terminal or via dmenu.

Also note that I'm using urxvtc (the rxvt-unicode-client), which means you'll need to load the daemon (urxvtd) in your startup file first (I usually use a script for scrotwm)
