IIRC, there will be no more modifications allowed in GDM for Ubuntu starting from 9.10 (Karmic) onwards, which I believe affects Linux Mint (which is now up to version 10, equivalent to Ubuntu's 10.10 I suppose) as well. So... yeah.

Back on GNOME, because while I find KDE quite convenient as well as GNOME, GNOME loads faster and we all know that's a fact, but I still love KDE too. Oh well, if it's best to get the best of both worlds then I shall indulge
Just a wallpaper change, nothing more. That and I'm not much of a "modder." This post has been edited by FlameReaper: Jan 2 2011, 01:34 AM |

Refining the LXDE desktop. Won't decide on a conky setup to use it for the time being.
For some reason, I decided not to get rid of LXPanel's window list since I have Docky down below. ... Let's just say I'm having it for pure cosmetic purposes. ... I really want to have a spare machine just so I can test other DE setups... don't have the balls for VM-ing things just for that purpose yet This post has been edited by FlameReaper: Feb 14 2011, 06:13 PM |

I won't call that minimalism since that usually refers to being minimal to the maximum degrees possible, but I can call that "being minimal" up to the user's preference. (Although from the screenshot I see, it's not "minimal" enough. Just about right for the typical common desktop user
I sure don't like just having a WM for things instead of a DE, and that's the reason I start my Openbox with the minimal things I'll need for a DE. That and I don't like my wallpaper to be "too empty." This post has been edited by FlameReaper: Mar 5 2011, 12:18 PM |

Saying "Desktop Linux" sucks is like a very discouraging factor who're already using it and are satisfied with it. Sure, in one way it might suck, but for some people whatever a Linux distro is now... if it can fulfill the tasks they want to do then it's an a-okay. I know I still miss my games on Windows, yet I haven't been using Windows because I simply don't find much to get interested to play myself. Even there are some games I have I still haven't finished just because I don't have any interest to continue playing. :/

QUOTE(G-17 @ Mar 18 2011, 07:59 PM) The guy in the video only succeeded at demonstrating how incompetent he himself is, not the operating system. ... That's also a problem you know. =_=;;.... and that is why I use Linux and BSD on all my systems, and hope it'll never become a "desktop friendly" proposition. If you build something any idiot can use, you can be rest assured that idiots will use it, and then the quality of your product is forever compromised. I'd rather us Linux people remain the elitist, arrogant bastards we are. Hell, I think even Ubuntu should only offer a CLI installation and force you to compile a kernel and Xorg packages from source. That and my Human-Computer Interaction notes tell me one thing: "If its unusable then it is useless, and we're not talking about those who can actually use it. We're talking about people who don't and how to make them NOT think it is useless." Gotta give credit to the distros aiming on improving usability you know. That's also the problem of that commenter in that video. Basically, in my stance "he doesn't find a Linux distro useful enough for him than the average Windows/Mac OS is." ![]() Rehashing some stuff from the plasma widgets (don't mind the bubble thing, it's just an eyecandy... well, actually, I set it to follow the ACPI CPU temperature) to the wallpaper and my conky settings. Copypasted and modified from vanilla conky settings I had running in my SliTaz virtual machine. And Songbird... currently the latest Linux build (for Debian/Ubuntu users) is up to 1.8.0, and it's not part of the official Linux builds since Songbird devs decided to drop support for this platform. But then a separate project based on it is now in development: Nightingale. This post has been edited by FlameReaper: Mar 21 2011, 10:39 AM |

On KDE. GNOME and Openbox for laters.
Icon Theme: Faenza KDE (somehow the Oxygen-KDE engine screwed up Docky's icons, ignore them) Wallpaper: Just a darker edit of a grayscale Lotus Esprit wallpaper I found somewhere, just Google it; heh. Themes: A ragtag mix-and-match of colors and themes I have for Plasma + default Kwin. I got fed up with the NetworkManager bundle (for KDE and GNOME), so I ditched them and picked up Wicd instead. Same goes with the GNOME and KDE's default Bluetooth manager, I went for BlueMan instead. ![]() This post has been edited by FlameReaper: Apr 7 2011, 01:50 PM |
